4.35 trillion corporation out bid by AI bros and now they have to strip down their devices to make a late release. Tells a lot about the greed of this corporation.

I dont like this at all.

Seems no reason why all the models dont get a simultaneous release like they always used to.

They always released 4 models in September iPhone, iPhone Plus/iPhone Air, Pro, Pro Max.

Now we will get Pro, Pro Max, and Fold.

Cynically, you might argue its designed to push more base iPhone users into buying a pro as they will get a new iPhone 6 months sooner....

I think the fold is going to be crazy expensive and not sell anywhere near as well as Apple hopes. Remember Samsung's gen 1 foldable? It was horrible - and although they have had years to iterate on the design Apple havent yet. Version 2 is going to be a lot better than version 1.

I actually think this might backfire.
Its easy to get swept up in the hype of a new processor and camera etc etc and dive in and upgrade your base iPhone in September...
However now, if you arent a Pro customer youll have to wait another 6 moths for the base iPhone to 'catch up' with the latest chip etc. During that time you know whats coming, you can see real world opinion of the new chip and features, and by the time Apple finally releases the new base iPhone you may well have come to the conclusion that theres just not enough of a difference between last years model and this years and will hold off now.

Probably would have been more profitable to release the base model first, Pro next year. That way mop up all customers who always upgrade to the best & newest release on two separate occasions.

Advice: look at the price of the next iPhone 18 Pro models; if it will be higher than the previous 17 Pro models. Do not wait for the regular 18 release; immediately buy the regular 17 model. If 18 will grow in price, the marker for it will be the 18Pro model.

No one knows where the market will be after half a year after the regular 18 is released. I think Apple will push distance more between 18 and 18 Pro models because regular 17 was a huge success, which slashed very big selling % of the Pro models …

They will just go to the Apple Store and buy the phone that costs $600 or $800. Day to day people don't search the web for latest Pro phones
Right, I get that. But day to day people do get confused about product naming/numbering and will likely be confused why there's now an iPhone 18 Pro but not an iPhone 18, especially when Apple has a tradition of continuing to sell last year's model at a discount.

It would be interesting to see how the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e compete against each other since both would be released next year.

I suspect this is going to be confusing for consumers who are used to annual announcements. I can already see the ragebait headlines about how Apple is raising the price of their phones and ignoring people who want/need a more affordable model, especially if one of the announcements is a $2000+ folding model
The iPhone 17 and 17e are going to remain on sale at low prices.

Normal people buy a new phone when their old phone breaks or is lost. They then go into their local carrier store and buy whatever is cheapest. Apple moving the base model iPhones from the fall to the spring will have zero impact on this behavior.

Honestly I would support this. No need for a new phone every year even pro models
Speak for yourself. Mobile PCs in the iPhone category are only getting a huge step up very much in need for annual iterations of improvements indefinitely with their upcoming foldables

Only if that doesn't mean a downgrade from the current base phone though. I actually think the iPhone 17 is the sweetspot whilst the 17e cuts too many corners.
I don't know... I sorta see them dropping the base iPhone and going with this lineup:
  • iPhone Neo (replacing both the "e" and the regular iPhone, somewhere in between in specs)
  • iPhone Air (it's already replaced the Plus)
  • iPhone Pro
  • iPhone Pro Max
  • iPhone Ultra (Fold)

"Great" for Apple -as they get some manufacturing efficiency out of it, but let’s be real: plenty of people who usually wait for September will just jump early and go straight for the Pro models anyway - especially in the US with the trading's and installment plans.

I kinda like the split schedule. Like how the Olympics got better when they started staggering summer and winter every 2 years.
