When i installed maverick on my MBP the first application i installed was Chrome. The next day i uninstalled it because safari is so good.

Yeah, so far I've tried firefox and chrome on 10.9, but neither of them can touch safari 7's performance, especially the scrolling. Chrome's is somewhat close, but firefox both lacks the native elastic and inertia scrolling, and totally chokes on any pages with embedded flash. Safari 7's scrolling is simply the best scrolling I've ever had in a web browser, it stays smooth on every site so far, even complex ones with lots of embedded flash crap etc...I just love it.

I keep firefox installed as a "backup" browser, but haven't needed it yet. I ended up uninstalling chrome because it seems like a huge hog, and has some annoying bugs on mavericks (for example the google chrome helper process will get stuck "not responding". there is a thread about this in these forums so I know its not just me, its also a clean-install of chrome on a clean-install of mavericks. Chrome also seems to use a ton of "energy" even when idle with just reddit open according to activity monitor, safari and even firefox use almost none when idle, but chrome just seems to sit there using 15-20 which is pretty ridiculous, I suspect it may be related to the above process not responding issue, but I'm not sure).

On my windows gaming PC I do use firefox and like it though, the machine is so powerful that performance differences between any of the browsers is not noticeable at all, and surprisingly firefox actually has the best smooth scrolling of any browser in windows (the windows version of chrome still has smooth scrolling hidden behind a flag, and even with the flag enabled its pretty crappy and doesn't even work on all websites, nor does it work at all with the mouse's middle-click "auto-scroll" /rant. I do wish I could use firefox as my main browser on both machines for the bookmark sync, but firefox just doesn't cut it for me on osx :( I wish apple would make an icloud extension for firefox so I could sync bookmarks between them, but I doubt that would ever happen lol.

Content supported by ads needs to have ads shown to live. I would imagine a hefty percentage of MacRumors users would use an Adblocker, which at a site of this size isn't hugely bad. This site can stay alive because of its size. It's smaller sites and channels that can cause a make or break scenario. It's effectively stealing content. Taking something without payment (the ad) but still continuing to use the sites resources. It's becoming a more common tread sadly. A 1/5 of IGN's users use an Adblocker stopping them from creating more content, employing more people etc. It's bad for everyone. In my mind you either have a paywall or something ad supported. I want the sites I love to prosper and continue to put out great content; without any revenue that'll stop happening. I don't mean to harp on at either of you nor am I judging your decisions but I've seen and been personally affected by this and it sucks.

Peer Schneider (IGN Co-Founder) did a great job of explaining how it affects IGN: http://bit.ly/1caG1E5

Similar for Ars: http://bit.ly/1aAbDkB and countless others...
Yes, I understand that, I've read links like that in the past–but that's why ad blockers allow you to selectively block ads, IMO. It's the sites that are plastered with ads where I block them.

Lol - I unblock sites I regularly use cos I think they deserve the revenue for ads. But they're all blocked by default so it's up to me to decide.

Probably a good compromise

Which is pretty fair and fine

Then don't be and go away.

Been here for years. MacRumors has always been my favorite forum.

I often switch back and forth every so often between Chrome and Safari regardless. For example, lately I've been using Chrome on 10.9 GM and it works pretty well overall.

However, I will say Safari is smoother overall than Chrome in 10.9 GM. I guess it comes down to preference of whatever I'm feeling at the time :p

how does youtube work on Safari 7.0?? do you all have flash installed?? i mostly use safari without flash but switch to Chrome if something needs it.

until safari gets adblock plus, I see no point in using it over chrome/firefox. simple as that. I probably would though if ABP was released for safari.

This can be solved with Alfred v2 really

A previous poster suggested Alfred. It's probably OK as a workaround but not as elegant as simply using the search bar.

In any case, glims has now been updated so I'm good, thanks! :)

HUH????
You can do this in Safari in every version.

As standard? How?

I've always used some kind of plugin. Originally acidsearch and more recently glims.

Safari's had Adblock as an extension since they were incorporated. It's the first entry in the popular category.

Only reason I use Chrome is for the extensions. I have to echo other posters statements about adblocking, Youtube ads are so frustratingly annoying and I will not go back to seeing those just for some short lived speed improvements.

With Chrome it will catch up to Safari 2-3 months after Mavericks releases and we'll continue to have a faster Chrome until the next major release of Safari. That's how it always works.

Apple could really get a leg up if they added a new store for Safari extensions (both free and paid) like they do with iBooks. Just like a built in store to the app I mean, not just that little extension webpage they have.

What, like this?

So I did. Sorry about that.

But, really, what more do you want? Apple provide a free SDK and a place to host the results. I don't see a problem except maybe the lack of a search field.

1. No search field
2. No screenshots
3. No reviews
4. No paid extensions
5. Hardly any even on the webpage
6. Hardly anyone knows that page even exists

Google knows how to do a proper extension site: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions

Googles is more like an App Store for your Browser while Apples is like their Tiger Widgets page which died off.

Well, they may get around to it some day. I hope they do but it's a long way from a deal-breaker to me.

TBH, I'm more concerned about Google's attitude to data mining via their services and apps.

Different strokes, and all that...

You are missing a small detail, "adblock" and "adblock plus" is two very different things in the way they work and their usefulness.

They are not the same and adblock plus is far far superior. But hopefully some day we will see a safari version.

Yes, technically they're different extensions but they serve the same purpose and even use the same block lists. I use Adblock in Safari and plus in Firefox and I can't tell them apart.

Differences.

To block YouTube ads in Safari just use the YouTube Center extension. It illustrates a big flaw in Apple's extensions marketplace - most of the good extensions aren't even listed on it.

I too am wondering about this. I don't want to install Flash because it causes things to "not respond" or break in Safari but I don't know what to do when I need flash for a website here and there.

For all you who switch back and forth between browsers, I am wondering how do you manage your bookmarks? do you import and export each time? or some useful extension that I might be missing?

It does seem safari is the browser to go for now, chrome is simply taking too much "energy". :(

Cheers.

yep. i just dropped chrome for safari on my 2013 trying to achieve the supposed 15+ hours of battery life Siracusa at Ars reported might be possible in his Mavericks review.

How do I do this? And how do I hide most visited page on Safari? Can't have my privacy all out in the open like that.

I wish I could move back to Mother Safari and enjoy her accessories like Key Chain, synced open tabs and bookmarks. Because naturally we all here using Safari in iPhone and iPad.
But on Mac, Safari cant beat the cmd-shift-c of Chrome. If you are in web business, you will know what I am talking about here :)
