What about the Mac Pro? Fiber Channel, Dual Xeons, etc, most people don't need those features. So why does Apple offer them? Hmm?

Most "consumer" people don't need them, but many "professional" folks can make use of them, hence why Apple offers the iMac for the former and the Mac Pro for the latter.

Oh, and about "features" and whether or not people need them, no Mac has a card reader but nearly every PC laptop has one. Me and some friends were loading some pictures into a presentation. Everyone had their Mac laptop, but no one had a PC laptop. No one brought a card reader, so we had to wait 20 minutes for my gf to get her card reader from her room just to load our pictures on to the computer. If I had my PC laptop, it would've taken 10 secs to do so. So you see, having a feature and not needing it is better than not having a feature at all.

Silly me, I just carry a .5m USB cable around with me. That way, I can connect it right to the camera and not worry about what type of storage media it has. :D

I'm sorry, but why do people keep asking? It's quite annoying seeing these types of threads cluttering the board, and not being able to help people who actually need help, not asking when new MacBooks' will be out.

Especially since if somebody here really did know - and was in a position to announce it - it would be the lead story on Page 1. :D

That it isn't is a sure-fire sign that nobody here knows - or if they know, they can't/won't say, so asking serves no constructive purpose.

I'm sure pro users can use many of the features in that list.

And yet, with a card reader one doesn't need a USB cable at all.

Pointless thread 18... God it's going good today isn't it...

There has been several sources that had said there wouldn't be new macbooks at the event, also as stated above there's already a good discussion going on another thread, please reframe from creating a new thread when the exact same subject is already being discussed somewhere else...

seems like this is all that you contribute to this forum. are you the new "topic cop?" who cares if it's been asked 10,000 times, don't respond and it'll sink to the bottom.

Then who's the Macbook Pro for?

yeah, you have a cable that can connect to 5+ different camera models and makes? good luck with that.

And yet, with a card reader one doesn't need a USB cable at all.

Assuming your card reader can work with the media type and capacity, of course... ;)

Please don't be facetious. The significant majority of digital cameras on the market have a USB interface.

yeah, they all have a USB interface, the point is, do they have the same connector at the end? a few have the mini-USB connector. Not all though. Especially with older cameras. A 4-in-1 card reader can read a majority of flash cards on the market, assuming it supports SD, which is the most used one I think.
I guess you missed the point though. No one had a USB cable or a card reader, no Mac has a built in reader. Therefore, we had to waste 20 minutes waiting for someone to get a card reader, while if someone had a PC laptop, the deed would have been done in 10 secs. Now who wants to argue that waiting 20 minutes is better than waiting 10 secs? :D

Someone who thinks stylish design and ease of use (and it's not like a card reader would affect those much at all) is more important than 19.8 important minutes. They also seem to think that less USB ports is better than more.

haha so true. I mean I like Macs and all, but come on. It's just plain ridiculous that their laptops are behind the other brands in so many ways. I think they're focusing waaaay too much energy on ipods and iphones but none on they're computers.
Just look at the Air, it's awful! it overheats, it has no optical drive, and all it's good for is cutting cake! The Macbook is nice cuz it works for most consumers, but the Pro is really behind its Dell and Lenovo competitors. And seriously, if all you can say is "go buy a Dell", then I guess you don't understand the point of progress. You know, that little thing that's the reason Macs are selling well in the first place. I guess if this were 2004, those people would be like why do you need Intel processors, G4's and G5's are good enough for most consumers. Let's stick with those processors forever! :)

+1

If you want all of those features than buy a Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba, or whatever.

Macs are designed with simplicity in mind. The majority of people don't need any of those features.

The majority of people need Firewire or the ExpressCard slot?

Features are there because they could be useful to some segment of the target consumer market. I know many friends with Macbook Pro notebooks and few of them could tell me what firewire is much less own anything that actually hooks up to it.

Just food for thought.

I have very little use for those card readers myself...but still, if I was going to a presentation and probably needed to load images from one I'd at least bring a cable. Its called being prepared.

Sorry what? I did it with 4 threads out of frustration of people constantly throwing up new threads, it's annoying being on forum spy, only to miss clicking the thread I wanted because someone somewhere, want's a link to buy a macbook...

If however, you like wading through duplicate after duplicate thread, please be my guest, why not ask how spore will run on your mac? or why one of your iPhone speakers is broken, or when the new macbooks will be released.

Tada

yeah, you really think twelve 15-18 year olds know anything about being prepared? :p
We did the presentation spur of the moment anyway , so of course no one had any cables or card readers, only Macbooks.
Keep telling yourself that you'll bring everything you could possibly need every time you need it. Plus, Blu ray can't be fixed with just a cable. What if someone gave you 50 Gigabytes of data on a Blu Ray when you're out on business? you'd be dead in the water. What if you needed to make a presentation in a boardroom, but it only had an HDMI hookup to a plasma TV? What if you needed internet access on a train or bus but forgot the connection card? Think about things like that.
(I do realize that you can use a DVI to HDMI adapter, but it won't do audio. And that's another thing you probably won't have with you.)

It will do audio if the computer's video card supports combing digital audio into the HDMI stream. My PC and ATI 3870 (with supplied adapter) provides audio when connected to my HDTV. My Mac does not. Providing a true HDMI port will eliminate this problem. I would like to see this as well. After all Apple is a media company now. :)

Cheers,

Fair enough, there's a big dif btwn a spur of the moment highschool presentation and being out on business. You can make all the scenerios you want but in the end buy the product that suits your needs. There's lots of 3rd party products that can meet user specific demands. That was the whole point of simplifying the computer line and why the iMac (and thus the mini & MB) was made in the first place.

I forget cables & stuff too but I've never thought of blaming the manufacturer. :p

Wow... how did you do it? Is there any company offering it, or any place one should look at for getting the display?

Here is the thread that got me started. There's also a wiki.

This is the one I bought. It was supposed to be glossy but mine showed up as matte. I'm ok with it but you may not be. Also, they will not answer any questions if you tell them its for a custom mod.

So far it works great with one exception I just found. My Vista video drivers look like crap. I am going to try re-installing the Bootcamp defaults (I'm running ATI drivers).

Cheers,

PS, I chickened out and paid a shop in Atlanta $80/hr to do the change (2 hrs). The had to use the thread and wiki to get it working but it worked once they used the sleep method to activate it.

20minutes huh... your life must have been ruined  Jeez, you mind as well carry around a desktop if you want every feature for ALL conceivable situations...

yep totally! actually all I was doing was highlighting how this one feature would have made our lives a bit easier had they included flash card slots in their Macbooks as in like, oh I don't know, nearly every other laptop manufacturer! All well, I was just trying to suggest how they can make these laptops better, and all I get is people attacking me and saying "you don't need these features". Well guess what, I do! lol

You will never convince some people.
