The founder of Hello Games, the makers of popular action-adventure survival game "No Man's Sky," yesterday tweeted two apple emojis, sparking speculation that the studio is teasing an announcement for Apple platforms at WWDC.

Hello Games founder Sean Murray has been known to tease upcoming announcements via cryptic emojis in the past. At WWDC last year, Apple announced that No Man's Sky would be available for the iPad and Mac would by the end of 2022. Hello Games missed that deadline and the game has yet to release for Apple devices, meaning that the two emoji teasers could indicate that the launch of No Man's Sky for the iPad and Mac is now imminent.

Given widespread anticipation about Apple's expected announcement of a mixed-reality headset at WWDC in less than a week, there is now speculation that Hello Games could be working on a game for the new device. No Man's Sky is already available on multiple VR platforms, including on PC and PlayStation VR. When the game was demoed at WWDC last year, it was played on a Mac with the M1 chip. Since Apple's headset is rumored to feature at least one chip that is based on the M2 chip in addition to a dedicated image signal processor, it should be more than capable of running the game.

Hello Games has also worked with Apple to publish games on Apple Arcade. Given Apple's discussions with Hello Games in recent years, No Man's Sky being among the initial wave of games available on Apple's mixed-reality headset is not out of the question.

While some rumors have suggested Apple's headset is not particularly focused on gaming, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has repeatedly referred to gaming, media, and communication as the three main priorities of the device. Apple has reportedly been working with a number of gaming developers to help them update their existing content for mixed reality and the company is expected to provide a robust set of developer tools for creating experiences for the headset.

No way in hell they made a new game. If anything it would just be No Man's Sky on Apple's headset.

Apple announcing getting a 7 year old game on one of its platforms at an event is just sad but it wouldn't surprise me - they did do it last year, and it still isn't even out.

Gaming on Macs, and full AAA games on iOS, has been neglected for too long. Hopefully the headset will help bring more games to all Apple platforms.
Of course depending on the game I still think the graphics hardware of iOS devices are too weak to be able to enjoy ”full AAA games” optimally. Macs has a better chance of doing that.

I'm not surprised at all. Something that looks like No Man's Sky was on Ventura installation screen half a year ago.

Apple Silicon completely changed Apple's position in AAA games. Hopefully more AAA developers will start making games for Apple's platforms:

Now that Apple Silicon Mac install base is larger in 2023, we should see more and more developers release games for Macs. They can build the game once and have it run on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and now vrOS.

And once the momentum starts rolling, other AAA developers will also want to join in.

Normally I'd agree, but this game is vastly different to what it was at release.

Imagine the resolution this VR headset has to push with two 4K panels. It's still impressive that it's able to run this game, with no computer attached. No standalone headset does this to this day.

We all want this thing to push PS5 graphics, it's not happening until rev 2 at least.

Yeah it's definitely NMS for the headset. Hello Games has done an amazing job supporting the game and I wouldn't be surprised if they have been secretly working on a headset version. I mean they have already put out a VR mode for the game so it shouldn't be too much work from them bring it over to Apple especially with it already being on iPad

Just read NMS is poorly optimized on PCVR and PSVR2, so people running it already on those platforms think it's impossible it would run on an Apple Headset with limited graphic power... We'll see

I don’t think it would be a good fit for the Reality Pro. It’s one of the most demanding games I’ve played when it comes to hardware. Even though Apple will have the best SOC for an all-in-one XR headset, it will be hard to get to run at consistently high frame rates at a high resolution. And hand tracking won’t cut it for controls, so they’d need to show it with a gamepad. And it probably isn’t a very friendly game for people susceptible to motion sickness.

Right... amazing how much text can be generated on different platforms after someone posts just two emojis on a social channel. 😁

I dont think the processinh will be on the VR head set, everything projected there will be just streamed. Only head accelerometers will be processed etc

I mean, who's really buying a $3k headset, let alone for 7 year old games...
Sure, give me Prehistoric Planet in AR/VR, that's a good watch for sure... but its just that a limited experience, at a high entry price...
Perhaps more of a market for the professionals - can imagine designers, creatives being wowed more by what this can do, if the software is compelling enough.
For many, I can see the price being a huge entry barrier and don't really see that dropping massively over time, and wouldn't be Apple like to sell at a loss, as Meta did with Quest, in order to build a user base (but then that hardly worked for Meta if you look at the little interest in Quest Pro... and the amount of Quests sold vs used regularly)

If any company can define this area, I'd say Apple were the ones to do it... but that was in the old days... Under Tim I'm not sure they have the direction or vision anymore to define a market segment.
But hey... I'll be watching next Monday anyway to see what's coming, and sure it's going to get all the headlines for a while.

This headset will be very interesting…

I am intrigued to see what audience they will aim it at / what the adverts/event will show as its purpose. I assume it won’t be gaming.
