Correct. I never understood why the quick swipe isn't multitasking? It is to me. Screen is too small for multiple apps in the same view anyways. It's be useless.

Look, I've been writing software professionally for 35 years, I saw my first Mac in 1983 (not in 1984), I don't care about "multitasking" on the iPad, and I'm quite sure that what the OP is asking for is _not_ an improvement at all. It just makes the iPad more complicated for very little benefit.
Some people are shown a better way, again, and again, and again, but they just can't accept it. And I'm talking about those wanting multitasking on the iPad. Apple sells very nice laptops with the multitasking that you are asking for. If that's what you want, buy one of those.

Well, lots of people actually have multiple devices of different ages. If I buy an app that runs on my latest iPad, but then it turns out I can't run it on the three older models that my family owns, I'm annoyed but the developer still made their money.

Lol yet people are deadset on the iPhone 6 4.7 and 5.5 having pretty much completely different specs, like RAM, etc. I'm not trying to start an argument, but I just couldn't help but put that out there haha.
Well, I haven't written software for 35 years, but I have used an iPad with multitasking in the form of windowed apps and not only did it provide a tangible benefit for me, but it wasn't confusing.
The "use something else to do that" argument is a tired excuse which is trotted out in response to feature requests.
IMO I really don't think we will see spilt screens on the iPad unless they come out with an iPad Pro. The iPad Air screen is just not big enough for split screens to be useful without some form of clunky scrolling and that is just not the Apple way of doing things. Now if they come out with the rumored 12.9" screen that would be an entire different matter.

Lol, I actually do this. Sometimes, I'd be using three and would have an iPhone or iPod Touch as calculator, etc.

True. I probably could have put my point across better by saying that eventually there will be apps that don't run on less than 2GB, and so there would be the situation where an app will only run on the 2014 Air, but not the 2014 Mini.
Similarly, one could imagine for example a game, that was designed such that it needs 2GB RAM to run its highest quality mode. This is not far fetched, as we are already seeing PC games from the not-too-distant past being ported to run on iOS (e.g. Bioshock). Therefore you would have the situation where your iPad Mini's performance was severely compromised through no reason other than lack of RAM.
And considering that RAM is pretty cheap now, I see no logical reason for Apple not to keep their iPhones and iPads as close to identical as they can, ignoring size. Varying things like RAM just fragments the product line, and unnecessarily complicates the production and supply chain.

This is a great point... This is exactly why I hate the idea of Apple segmenting their devices, i.e, possibilities of the 2014 mini and 2014 air having much different specs, or the iPhone 6 4.7 and iPhone 6 5.5 having a similar situation. Segmentation = Complication, which never is good for consumers, developers, or manufacturers.
Having many apps multitasking can also significantly impact system resources and appear to slow down the main app you are using, use available RAM and significantly impact battery life. It's a feature that doesn't necessarily add much to the user experience and it does complicate it. However there is no doubt that it will be a feature heavily implemented in future.

It may well impact on battery life, however I carry a spare battery for my Samsung galaxy S5 so it doesn't matter much. I haven't noticed that it impacts on performance. I find it incredibly useful for example if I want to watch a YouTube video but also browse the net at the same time, or if I want to type on a forum but need to find some information from another website. It's easy to have two browsers open on the same screen.
It's a feature that I'd love to have on my iPad Air, but perhaps not enough as I still choose an iPad over one of the galaxy tab pros.

Well that's the advantage of having multiple devices lol my boyfriend can't understand why I can on occasion be using my iPad, iPod touch and smartphone simultaneously😀

Seriously, the screen size is big enough but iPad lacks from ram. If they add more ram, then there will be "only compatible with...." and people are mad because they just bought the newest iPad and then realize that they cannot run some newest apps. Apple is digging its own graveyard.... we are living a year 2014 and using windows side by side is something that is needed and wanted.
Sold my iPad Air month ago - it lacks from memory and it was just a nice toy but the productivity with iPad is in babys shoes still. Been using my Note for two years and never been disappointed with it, but six months with iPad felt like "such a huge wasted opportunity". Well, im interested still in seeing Air2 irl and how it is working. I probably get it, play with it and keep or sell it. But if it has only one gig ram, then I wont buy it. It is not the money issue, but already had Air with one gig ram and it was clearly mistake...

Everyone is complaining that a 7.9 inch or 9.7 inch screen is too small for multitasking. Yet, someone comes along, mentions how they use multitasking on a 5.1 inch phone and nobody bats an eye?

I get it -- a lot people here feel its more trouble than its worth. But its so slick on windows 8--you just drag an app in from the left edge. The only stumbling point there is finding two usable apps!
It's cool until my Galaxy S4 phone keeps slowing to a crawl when I am trying to do something simple like make a call or text because 20 multitasking apps are chugging away in the background updating, synching, accessing other apps and uploading data to the internet. I am wasting more and more time trying to suspend and shut down all those multitasking apps running in the background on my quad core Galaxy devices while my iPad Air is running smoothly 99% of the time.

My S4/note 3/S5 didn't/don't have any problem. I rarely close down my apps. Having said that my Air performs like a champ which is why I don't get the argument for 2GB of ram.

so you don't have tab reloading in safari! nor "open" apps restarting when you switch to them? If not, then I question your perception of "performs like a champ"
Fixed for you. Buying a full fledge laptop so I can keep stocks in the foreground at all times is a bit of over kill.
Just throwing this out there but wouldn't it just be easier for you to not use features you don't like or want? Seems selfish to argue against something that would benefit others that you could just ignore.
Quasar worked fairly well and if Apple implemented something it would be much similar to use like Samsung has done which is very easy to use (even for someone with only 35 years of software design 😀 ).

Well if it's a like many hours later or days later then yes they do restart. However within a few hours they open up where I left them. I suppose we all have different ideals for out devices.
Mine varies a lot. Sometimes, I'm shocked that something won't reload even though it's the next morning. Other times, I respond to an iMessage, go back and the whole app or web page reloads.
This is my usage exactly. I'm actually more surprised when apps don't reload then when they do.
I really like my Air as well. I like my GS-4 Android OS based phone but the number of apps updating and asking for permissions has gone from ridiculous to absurd. When you have to read through pages of permission notes daily it gets frustrating and you simply throw your hands in the air and select "approve all" so you can continue to use the ones you need. Then you find yourself staying awake thinking about it late at night wondering exactly what privacy you have given up ... contacts, location, etc... All the Android apps might as well have complete access to all information on your phone. At least with the Apple iOS apps you are led to believe Apple did it's screening for privacy even if you allow some permissions like location services.

i accidentally bought an item twice because of during the payment process, the tab reloaded =) well, when i got the second package, i just returned it back. they wasnt able to cancel it for some reason i dont remember... but no harm.. something should be done to fix that annoying reloading - especially in wrong time...
at first the experience was just horrible. apple fixed the booting problem (atleast it doesnt happened so often anymore) but mem-warning and reloading /crashing still exist. well i dont know if they have done something to it during this late summer /fall because I sold mine and dont have Air right now...
