I think it'll be updated. There will almost definitely be new iPod nanos with an iOS 7-like interface, Apple TV would look old/weird if it was the only thing that didn't change. It's also not a huge interface, wouldn't be a lot of work.

Maybe but I have this feeling if it was 9to5Mac or someone else would've had rumors about it or we would've seen screen shots. Maybe they managed to keep this a secret but I doubt it.

And here I was hoping Apple will release an apple TV 4 with:
A6 or A7 dual core
gigabit ethernet port
802.11ac
16GB inbuilt ssd for new app store
usb 3.0 port for external hdd

Not a single thing on your list would affect ATV performance whatsoever.

  • A6/A7 would allow you to...move your selector faster?
  • gigabit ethernet / 802.11ac would improve...nothing. Your broadband internet is the bottle neck (at roughly 5-50 Mbps)
  • more flash storage would...let you buffer more video in case your internet suddenly dies?
  • usb 3.0 would let you...do nothing that AirPlay can't already do.

I was hoping that version 3 would have been jailbroken by now. I'd like to stream my entire collection of videos from my NAS without having to convert them. Apple should open up Apple TV a bit like they did with the iPhone. Less reason to Jailbreak and more reason to get one for each TV set.

Would also like iPlayer and 4OD.

Air Video Server HD. Converts the sound to AAC on the fly, leaves the video untouched.

Waiting on new hardware with HDMI pass through to run iOS while watching tv.

Note he said "SSD for new App Store", I think his implication is the AppleTV would become more of an iOS-like device, with full fledged apps, games, would need local storage for those, faster processor (SOC) for rendering graphics, etc.

Certainly as a audio/video streamer, that's not needed.

Roku Rocks

I like my Roku and although I'd get an Apple TV in a hot second, it will have to beat Roku by a mile not just with some software update. Roku updates often and right now, they have just what I want so Apple needs to make something worthwhile that will make me trash my Roku. Hope it is real soon

The problem is that the iOS app/channel model is a really antiquated way of looking at video (or even audio) content that TiVO tore down over a decade ago now. A modern UI would put the content first and let the source be a secondary consideration but I doubt that is in the cards for ATV any time soon.

I agree. If we do see a UI update it will probably work the same, but it'll just look like iOS 7.

It's software, it's far easier to keep under wraps than hardware. There weren't any rumors (I don't think) for the previous Apple TV UI update.

I have a few ATV's myself. Software update is ok, only if they are not intent on force feeding App's and content I do not want and cannot remove from my menu's.

Go into the parental controls and you can hide any of the channels/apps.

Hoping we see an Airplay Direct (use similar tech to airdrop possibly, and the obvious NAS support. Plus an iOS 7 UI. An App Store would be nice, but I just don't know if we'll ever see one at this point..

I have an AppleTV on each of my four tvs. We love it. I am pumped for a software update!!!

Well, I mean, I'm not that really pumped about it, but it would be nice.

Two tvs here and two Apple TVs - one jail broken. Enjoy them all the time especially the airplay.

I hope you're right, and not just because I personally think the current interface is ugly, but it doesn't go with iOS 7 or the new iCloud site. It would feel way more out of place than OS X.

Really? The Roku is huge competitor.

Not on features or hardware capabilities. The Roku competes on content. That's where Apple needs to up its game.

No new hardware needed, unless Apple's bringing out some new feature which requires said hardware (but I haven't heard any rumors indicating anything like that).

Absolutely. AppleTV needs to burst the cell walls of all those little apps.

Imagine being able to search for something and find the four services where you can see it (the ones you subscribe to, followed by those you can pay one-time rental/buy fees on), linking directly into that service to watch said program with no middle steps.

Imagine being able to see "what's popular" amongst all the content services you subscribe to, on a regional level (ie, I probably don't care what is popular in Japan, but I do care about what people in Northern California are watching).

Tip I learned recently on another ATV board here: go into parental controls, and disable any of the icons you don't want to see on the screen anymore.

Really? The Roku is huge competitor.

As someone who owns both, the Roku excels in just about every possible way. The only thing the AppleTV is better at is YouTube simply because the Roku doesn't have a YouTube channel.

If the AppleTV had an app store, it would level the playing field. Time will tell.

You're wrong about gigabit and AC. It has nothing to do with internet speed, it has to do with streaming local content. When I stream HD from my phone to my apple tv there is a lot of buffer time, AC and gigabit ethernet would resolve it.

There are a lot of people online that keep calling wireless AC useless because your internet can't saturate it. It's not just about your broadband, it's about streaming super high quality local content without any hiccups.

Finally wireless G is 54mbps right? Not many people have 54mbps in their homes, well thats because reality never reaches spec, have a higher max speed will allow real speed be faster and more reliable.

Decompressing video would definitely be faster with the A6/A7 chip.
Any device using 802.11ac would AirPlay a lot faster over 802.11ac.
More flash would definitely allow better buffering or local storage of purchased movies.

Agreed

Total Roku sales: 5 million units

Total AppleTV sales: 10 million units.

More sales doesn't mean it's better, look at Android.

Returned my roku 3 as soon as I plugged it in. Not only is the Netflix interface bad but the picture quality is as well. Side by side with my atv3 is miles apart.

That's Netflix's problem, they wrote their software for the Roku. Also, Netflix has a crappy content selection to begin with.

So I can has Amazon Prime now????

Get a Roku :)

The shipments supposedly are Apple set top boxes, not Apple TV, so of course All Things D can say no new Apple TV, in fact safe for anyone to say that, Why?

Because it may be an entirely new product and not an Apple TV at all.

If apple is to make a full sized "real TV" later next year, they would call it Apple TV most likely, so the old Apple TV will be retired. BUT they would almost certainly have a new "set top box" called something entirely new to replace the Apple TV as we know it and get out of the hobby and into something real that may work with cable companies like Time Warner as they talked about.

So are we safe to assume the 3 shipments were old hardware of Apple TV? or is this an entirely new product with apps, maybe a gaming controller etc... or is this just a cover for say a watch, which is of course highly unlikely but is interesting because of the weight of the shipments, if it was a watch it could be up to a million, enough for an initial launch.

Clearly if it was not a complete fake, this Apple "set top box" is something they have cooking..

Since you have both, I have neither, please tell me...well...roomies just got a Roku, which has lots of channels, but, the quality of some of the stuff on there is like watching old 240 or 360p youtube vids, this looks worse on HDTV.

So, my question is, does the Apple TV have higher quality video on the channels it does have?
