Streaming devices have become stale. Whether Roku, Google or Apple TV. Until the grip by cable tv can be be broken, nothing will change. Until the consumer can stream whatever network they want, and pay for what they want, there is very little these streaming devices can improve on other than cosmetic gui changes.
Rumors, for several years now, have been pointing in the direction of apple doing just this, something new, beyond a set top box, that directly competes with cable/sat providers, by doing things a whole new way (and I'm sure it'll be via internet). Rumors of making deals with TV companies, rumors of TV related patents, including no-glasses 3D, etc. But, probably not going to happen before this time next year, if in 2014 at all.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE up the iTunes Match limit!

Amazon Cloud gives your 250K songs in addition to Amazon purchases. I have 115,000 songs in iTunes and desperately want to use Match but don't want to carve out different libraries. I would even pay $25 per unit of 25K songs if they would let me.

Super AppleMedia NAS?

How about a mega NAS-style genuine iTunes server box? Yes, we can do it now but it is not that easy for home users. Between that and and off-site iTunes Match Apple's advantage would be ubiquity.

External storage capability please! Really miss stored content like the first generation unit had.

Is the App Store stuff people want just a pipedream or something rumored to happen?

So the new Apple TV that is coming is not going to be anything new? So the latest Apple TV I got in June is all good thank GOD.:D

Yep... +1

I just bought a Roku 3 box, and I gotta tell you.... it's superior to the AppleTV in almost every way. Like other review sites have said; there's really no point in buying an AppleTV instead of a new Roku unless you're really needing the "Airplay" feature to project from an iOS device or Mac wirelessly, or you have tons of paid content trapped in iTunes that you want to play to the TV.

With the Roku, you can add your own "channels" (apps, really) just by clicking on them in the online store, or even from the Roku iOS app (which doubles as a remote control for the Roku if you like). You get excellent apps like a Plex client for free, Pandora, Slacker radio, and much more. Many of the channels are just "niche" items (like one that features nothing but a series of guitar lessons a guy creates, and one that only shows exercise videos) -- but they're really cool to have available, and AppleTV lacks them.

You also have a small selection of games you can download for it, including game show titles like Jeopardy and You Don't Know Jack ... and Angry Birds comes with it free.

The included Roku remote can stream the audio to a headphone jack built right into it, so you can listen to shows without disturbing anyone else in the house, and it's motion sensitive (like a Wii controller) for the game titles.

And right now, Roku has them for $10 off, making them cheaper than the AppleTV. So as much as I like Apple products -- I ditched the AppleTV and doubt I'd go back unless Apple really steps up their game with them.

I think Apple should open up the ATV for the app store... developers would help make that a revolutionary feature, like it was with the iPhone...

You still don't have Youtube support out of the box, which is huge. Roku has pros and cons. ATV is better. I think this outclasses the Roku: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Interne... internet player&cp=1&lp=1#tab=specifications

yet you still need to have a cable subscription to access many of the new channels added..

What's the point of watching cable through your apple tv if you already watch cable through your tv set??

They(Apple) are tightening up their iTunes ecosystem and enriching it at the same time to ward off competitions. If they allow playing through external drives, their market share can double within 3 months.

Not a single thing on your list would affect ATV performance whatsoever.

  • A6/A7 would allow you to...move your selector faster?
  • gigabit ethernet / 802.11ac would improve...nothing. Your broadband internet is the bottle neck (at roughly 5-50 Mbps)
  • more flash storage would...let you buffer more video in case your internet suddenly dies?
  • usb 3.0 would let you...do nothing that AirPlay can't already do.

Speak for yourself. I have 200Mbps and the option to go to 1000Mbps:D

Also, 4K streams might be on the horizon too; more flash and A7+ would def help there

It's a great little product. We love ours, especially with the new channels. I hope they don't bloat it with other apps or whatever. Let iTunes be the behemoth. This is just a conduit.

HINT: A6/A7 would be nice for an App store to play games on your TV ;)

re: YouTube

Yeah, the lack of YouTube on the Roku is something I knew someone here would mention. That's true, but really? You consider it "huge"?

Honestly, I consider most YouTube content to be best viewed in a browser on someone's computer. It's not really "TV worthy" material, in most cases. Most YouTube videos are only a few minutes long, so even Google had to come up with that "lie back" feature for GoogleTV and YouTube where it keeps streaming you its "best guess" at related videos, back to back, so it feels a little more like normal TV programming.

To each their own, but I'd never buy an AppleTV over a Roku just over YouTube, when there are SO many other types of content Roku has and AppleTV doesn't.

As for that Sony set-top GoogleTV box? Yeah, that's a strong contender too. (I also own a Sony GoogleTV with the features integrated into the set itself, BTW.) But the problem I have with GoogleTV is, they never really got a lot of developers on-board with writing custom Android apps designed just for it. When you go to the Android app store on one, it offers you all sorts of apps primarily intended for an Android phone ... and the experience on a GoogleTV is sub-standard. The apps made just for it number well under 100 or so last time I checked, and Google hasn't really made much effort to push the platform either.

I have a few ATV's myself. Software update is ok, only if they are not intent on force feeding App's and content I do not want and cannot remove from my menu's.

Select Settings > General > Parental Controls
(You don't have to enable them, just go there)

Scroll down and select either Show or Hide as desired

Done...

Renting movies on roku

What are the movie rental options on roku? I am aware of amazon instant video, but amazon instant video is US only as far as I know. At least iTunes is international.
