I actually think that externally, the Verizon model is the iPhone 5, but I see the internals and the iOS getting upgraded this summer.

Most logical/probable scenario. I think the primary focus will be on iOS 5. That way, the new Verizon iPhone customers will still be able to feel current with their devices, and those that have had their devices for a year can feel that they are getting an upgrade.

I work for a company that does a lot of work for Apple, not sure if anyone will believe me as there seems to be a lot of WUM's on here... But I'll tell you anyway.

I've been informed that there will be no hardware updates to the iPhone this year and the iPhone 5 will launch in the summer of 2012.

Apple want to do a universal launch for the next iPhone and due to the release of the Verizon iPhone, and they think the iPhone 4 is a strong product, they will wait until 2012.

The white iPhone 4 will come out this summer.

From a business standpoint, this makes perfect sense. A launch next summer of an IPhone 5 that works on both networks is a smart move. I am not sure what else the next gen of IPhone could do anyway from a functionality standpoint. A 4G IPhone 5 that works on both networks would be sweet.

It does seem odd to me that there would be a new Verizon iPhone this month... only to release another new iPhone four months from now.

...but to leave a two-year gap between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 would create a huge window of opportunity for competitors.

I don't see what else a next Gen IPhone or Android could do that they don't do now. Other than add a transporter function...LOL
Except for being fully 4g compatible, but those networks are not even fully implemented yet anyway. OR, maybe they will go for end of year update and adjust the schedule.

While I do agree that updating the product only next year would be a significant gap, I don't think Apple would really be that worried if this was their plan. Do you really think that there are going to be countless iPhone users jumping ship just because there was a shift in the update cycle? As much as people may like to deny it, I can guarantee that the majority of iPhone users would never give up their iPhone, regardless of what other tech was available from competitors.

It's an Apple product. People will be controlled by it whether it's been on the market for 1 year or 2 years. ;)

after reading the posts following mine.... switching to probable ... like 3G to 3Gs... 4S?

How about 4 to "4G"? With ATT's new network capability rolling out there would be some credibility to this, but I still prefer to believe there'll be a "5" of some kind...

I also heard GM is not making or going to sell Fuel powered cars and trucks, they are waiting until the Electric vehicles become more popular so they do not have to wait until another fuel alternative comes out?

Seriously unless it comes out of Apple's mouth (Steve or Tim) I am not sure anything can be validated, also this would upset all the 3GS users who are due for an upgrade this summer, I do not think Apple is planning on not coming up with some new model, maybe not 4G or LTE but they will be coming up with something.

Unless you can post facts this is a waste of everyone's time, I wish people would stop doing this for attention.

I kinda of miss the days when most of us consumers had no idea when an update was coming, and it always seemed to come just a few weeks after we bought something.

You do realize that Verizon is not the only other carrier to start selling iPhone4. First was ATT, then Europe T-Mobile, and several other carriers got it there, Japan has it on their carriers. There are like 10+ different carriers selling the iPhone world wide.

Just because Verizon got it now, doesn't not mean they will hold off on the iPhone5, because Verizon is new to the game. You don't think those 10 other carriers might be upset to have wait a full year to sign new customers on, or sell them a brand new phone again ? That would be a major loss, specifically if these carriers sort of bank on expecting a new iPhone every Summer.

Seems people are confusing 'new phone' with 'new model' and with 'updated phone'.

Judging from Apples record, this year will be an updated phone. Same screen, same form-factor, same #4. Might get some new innards and maybe an antenna fix, but just an updated phone non-the-less. And they'll tack an S or a G on the end.

The 'new model' is every other year, not every year.

I would agree, though, that if Apple is taking competition from phones like the Atrix seriously, they could wake the hell up and put out a new model this year that is going to compete. We can only dream.

That is a valid point. But as much as you can say that, you can also argue the point that the new Verizon customers will be pissed off if it is updated.

Regardless, OP was quite clear when he specifically stated "hardware upgrades." Given the fact that every single GSM iPhone release has had "hardware upgrades," you can see the brashness of the OP's claim. Call the release whatever you like, but to say there will not be a phone with different innards and/or revised antenna this summer is silly.

Apple will release iPhone5 this summer...
here are just reasons whiich might make sense.... imho

1. If they don't release iPhone5, then Android / other competitor's devices gain more market share. Why let the competition gain additional momentum?
2. It's a way for Apple to help keep AT&T one step... or a half step ahead of Verizon. AT&T gets the iPhone 5 in June 2011, and Verizon gets their version of iPhone 5 in Feb 2012...
3. And there might just be minor tweeks to the iPhone5... it doesn't have to be a complete re-design... ie. 3G and 3GS

Just my 2 cents... I'm sure there are more logical reasons out there why the iPhone 5 will happen.

How can you possibly go by Apple's past record to try and say that this years iPhone will be a minor upgrade?

The order went...

iPhone - New
iPhone 3G - Major upgrade from the original iphone
iphone 3Gs - Update to 3G
iPhone 4 - Major upgrade from the iPhone 3Gs

If we are going by apples past record, i would expect a large update this year, with a minor update to 4G in 2012.

There will also be another new iphone this year because believe it or not, the USA is not the only country in the world and just because another carrier got the iPhone there, doesn't mean the whole rest of the world will miss out just to make sure the small percentage of Verizon iPhone owners don't cry and regret not waiting a few months.

Just my thoughts...

It does make sense. I just don't see why Apple would release another iPhone just a couple of months after the Verizon one and the new white iPhone 4. I bet they would piss off many Verizon customers.

this is my guess:

1. update iPhone 4 comes out for ATT ONLY in June, maybe just a speed bumb, camera upgrade etc..... to keep ATT fans happy with their yearly update

2. A couple of months later, they add the same specs to the Verizon iPhone 4 so the early adapters do not flip that 4 months later the iphone for Verizon was updated

3. June 2012, a brand new iPhone 5 with new design, LTE (4G) etc.... comes out and it's 1 iPhone that can be used on Verizon and ATT

none of this is fact, I did not hear it from the bumb that knows a guy at Rite-Aid that knows a neighbor who knows a friend that works as security in the mall that has an Apple store, just pure speculation a my opinion of what makes sense to make most users happy

The entire world (not just Verizon customers) would be upset if Apple does not update the iPhone 4. There is too much money involved for Apple to ignore a yearly update. Makes no sense to delay an update.

Upgraded internals and colors makes the most sense. Possibly the same processor as the new Ipad2, upgraded camera, more RAM, antenna fix etc. The phone itself will look the same at least for one more year.
