If each transaction takes half the time, you can let the lines get twice as long, without impacting the actual time spent in line.

That completely ignores the fact that you would be out of reach of the merch if the line is twice as long and assumes a lot of factors such as the store having multiple registers.

Edit: but I see where you're going and in some cases it would work

No NFC

Don't worry, Android is steaming ahead ;)

Don't remind me.

I hope NFC doesn't take off..

WHile appears to be good, maybe I'm just no used to the concept yet due to lack to availability, but you average feature you can join from the phone anyway, you can now do the same thing automatically ?

Joining wireless networks, Signing into sites ...

Ok,, nothing interesting as yet, but how about some "real" use for NFC ... Something the phone doesn't have.....

Hate to go off on a rant here, but i'd rather login manual or join wireless networks manually anyway over NFC style...

Just another piece of technology that makes you loose control over your device.

The auto wifi signon is actually quite nice.

You can scan a sticker on your table at a Restaurant and connect to their secure wifi without having to ask them for the password.

iPhone Models

If the next iPhone doesn't have NFC, I may delay my purchase until the following iPhone in 2013 or look elsewhere. I'm getting a Nexus 7 and will experiment creating custom tags and seeing how they fit in my workflow. If I find it as useful and as simple to set up as I've read or seen, then I won't buy a phone without it.

How can you spend the same amount of time in line when the person in front of you spent less time due to their super-duper ultra fast NFC checkout? Come on man, pay attention. One has a direct affect on the other.

I explained it to you in the first post. Its very simple:

If each transaction takes half the time, you can let the lines get twice as long, without impacting the actual time spent in line.

Not ignoring anything, really. Nor did i say it would be as beneficial everywhere. As for goods being "out of reach", it is possible to change the layout of the store (which comes with the added benefit of a larger zone of exposure). Cutting registers in half (in this optimistic scenario) also frees up valuable store space that can be used for other purposes (whether it be shelves, express registers or self-scanning areas).

And even when all this is said and done, i am sure that for the vast majority of stores out there theyd happily lose some impulse shopping if it meant transactions could be significantly sped up. Dead time at the register is simply that expensive. Even at only 10 seconds per minute per register, it quickly adds up.
