I'm an apple fan and have had every iPhone. I said epic fail because they obviously didn't produce enough phones just like they do every year. My gut feeling is they do it on purpose to keep the hype going and it actually creates more sales because it keeps everyone frantic.
If they are actually doing this as a marketing ploy, which I doubt, it sure seems to be working.
If customers are fooled ten years running, well it raises some concern as to how gullible people are.
I want mine yesterday as well, but if I think for a minute, I won't do anything with new iPhone that I am not doing with current one. Trying to prep millions of phone with latest software, just released and wanting to get water resistance correct delaying production has held things up.
I guess coming from manufacturing environment, I am a bit more forgiving about trying to release millions of a product on same day in several dozens of countries.
I could agree on normal intro pains, since as you point out it happens each year to greater or lesser extent. But "epic", I reserve that for bigger f-ups like this election for President.

My conspiracy theory is the new designed 8 model, edge to edge, OLED, etc was supposed to be the 7. Their production/parts and such couldn't handle that in terms for launch so they scrambled and put together this current version of the 7 we have, and added the Jet Black one as a gimmick much later to sort of "seal the deal" for those on the fence. They had the A10 chip so that was sufficient as a backup considering it's above and beyond any android out there.
That might be so if the phone case was simply a box of parts you shove together and ship.
You ever design, procure, manufacture, assemble, test any product as complex as a hand held computer? In quantities of multi millions no less.
