A series of rumors over the past several months have suggested that the next-generation iPad could gain an SD card slot, making it easier for consumers to load photos directly onto the device without needing to resort to a dongle attached via its dock connector. Cases surfacing last week and claimed to be for the next-generation iPad suggested that the slot might make an appearance on the top left side of the device, opposite the mute switch and volume rocker.

But a new report from AppleInsider claims that an SD card slot is unlikely to appear in the next-generation iPad, with the unknown case cutout actually corresponding to the 3G model's SIM card slot, which has reportedly been located from further down the left edge of the device.
In a mockup analysis of all the openings and recesses in those cases, it was speculated that that left-side opening could represent the much-rumored SD Card slot. However, a person that AppleInsider trusts on matters such as these has since rebutted that notion, stating instead that the break in the next-gen iPad enclosure at that location is actually a relocation of the tablet's SIM card slot.

That may explain why some of the other next-gen iPad casings making the rounds don't sport the same opening, as users of 3G iPads aren't likely to need ready access to the SIM slot on a daily basis. And like Gruber's sources on the subject, the same person referenced above gave no indication that there's an SD Card slot elsewhere on the device.
Apple is expected to launch the next-generation iPad sometime in the next few months.

Why do I need to remove my GSM SIM that often?

Why would anyone need to remove the SIM card so often that adding a cutout in the case makes sense?

Not that I think it would have an SD card slot either, although I want it.

To be honest, I never expected Apple to fit anything as useful to people as an actual SD card slot. So I'm not surprised. A little disappointed of course as it would be useful to myself and others at times, but not surprised.

Apple still see the iPad as a computer accessory it seems. Here's hoping one day, sometime in the future, they will regard it as a independent device, or perhaps make a different tablet that is.

Let there now follow a wave of fans saying how an SD slot would be a bad idea :D

If they would put a USB port on the thing, I think a lot more complaints would be stifled. I can get a small compact multi-card (not limited to just SD) reader for USB easy, but I also tend to use USB flash drives a lot (my car stereo uses one for example and there are some nice tiny 8 and 16GB drives the size of my thumbnail now and these are preferable between computers than SD since almost every computer on Earth (save iOS devices) has USB ports on it.

Then you could even plug in your iPhone/iPod Touch and sync the thing off the iPad instead of having to carry around a notebook computer with you on trips to do it. Of course that would also be helped out by offering the option of larger SSD drives than they currently offer.

I think Steve is afraid people might then hack the iPad to run the full OSX operating system instead of iOS or maybe even Linux or Windows (OMG!! The horror!). :D

So iPad 2 is now going to have a 1024x768 display, a 1 mega-pixel camera, and no SD Card slot. What is next to be dropped the rumored A5 processor?

Seriously though, why would anyone in their right mind design a case to give access to the Sim Card???

Ah, yet ANOTHER thing taking way.

I'd like to see rumors of things ADDED that haven't been speculated yet, Haven't seen that for awhile.

Make it easy on yourselves and wait for the 2035 iPad. That will surely have all the features you want. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy my yearly refreshed iPad. :)

I can here the tag line now :

"We loved it so much. We didn't change a thing. iPad 2."

Would have been a fun bullet point to have, but for the % of users who would actually transfer photos directly (among the actual public, not us tech-heads), omitting it (leaving it as an external accessory) is fine.

I’d like to have it, but no big deal. This does explain the differences in the leaked cases.

Why would a case need a cutout for the SIM card?? It's not like someone would need to swap SIMs in and out often.

I think it's to accomodate another speaker.... It would make sense, as multimedia oriented an ipad is to have stereo speakers. And, at that placement, it would ensure the user was in a stereo field regardless of whether it was in portrait or landscape.

There's my two cents.

The SIM card slot theory makes no sense. How often does Joe Consumer need to change the SIM card?

Do iPhone cases have SIM card cutouts?

Given what iPad 2 is going to be, I can't imagine a bigger waste of money than upgrading to it from iPad 1 after barely a year of ownership.

iPad 2 is going to be a fantastic product for everyone who has patiently waited for it. But for iPad 1 owners...well let's just say it's going to be serious fanboi only upgrade.

No bumps to storage capacity. (wait and see, it's not in the cards $ wise this year)
No "retina" display.
No SD slot for easily expanding storage.

Aside: what is with that graphic? Possible mini display port? Has this manufacturer ever heard of wireless? iPad is a wireless product. Anything and everything Apple can do to keep iPad wireless, shall be done, and that includes never ever ever adding display port, USB, hdmi, or any other ridiculous thing.
