To have a useful SD card slot, iOS would have to have a file system (accessible by user).

To you guys crying foul about the supposed lack of SD reader and USB port: You are aware that there's a Camera Kit for $29 that will read your SD card and give you a USB port?

The only ones I know of that actually want either of those (and that would actually use them) are photographers and all I know are happy lugging massive amounts of stuff in bags anyway so two small adapters can hardly be a dealbreaker? And I've yet to meet an owner of a product of another handset/tablet builder that is actually swapping SD cards... or attaching anything with an USB port.

As far as I can this is a non issue outside the miniscule clique of feature creep hailing geeks that is crying foul for every missing feature in all electronic devices.

It would seem pretty clear Apple has zero interest in adding any I/O ports to their iDevice line. No USB 3, no firewire, no HDMI, nada. If there were one port I could maybe see making the cut, it might be the Mini DisplayPort. But again, that's a distant "maybe." Especially given their apparent interest in pushing AirPlay. As that feature matures, I could see that riddling a Mini DisplayPort moot. Maybe.

Anyway, why would they add additional ports when dock connector + adaptor(s) [theoretically] will [could] suffice? This allows Apple to maintain the clean lines for which their products are renowned.

My iPhone has a sim card. But my iphone cases never have a sim card slot cut in them. In the rare instance I need to remove my sim card, I take the case off.

Are you iPad people popping your sim cards out so often that removing the case is a hassle now?

I notice people complaining that they have to be able to remove the SIM card while traveling. Please note that this is supposed to be an iPad case, not the mold for the back of an iPad. Therefore, it will cover the actual inclosure. You do not need access to the SIM card so much that you can't remove the case.

That won't happen in iOS, but it doesn't need to! They just have to let apps like Dropbox and Mail have access to it. That'd do the job.

I think that'd be something Apple WILL do. I just want that to be over USB (or just a USB apapter), not by card slot.

If any apps have access to it, they all will. You'll end up with a million versions of finder embedded in a million apps. Apple doesn't want that.

No, you're imagining it wrong.

What you're describing is letting the apps CONTROL the drive. That's not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about COPYING to an app. So, for example, 'Mail' could attach that Word file and send it. Or 'Dropbox' can take that zip file and upload it to the Dropbox account.

That's all. Just 'grab a file,' basically. That's nothing like Finder which would allow you to name, move, or erase files. That's not what I'm talking about.

Here we go again MacRumors, posting threads based on "third party" case makers.

You don't really think Apple shares this kind of information with these folks, do you?

Maybe you do based on how much coverage you give these low lifes!

Ah, yes. Someday they'll allow that.

Why would anyone need to remove the SIM card so often that adding a cutout in the case makes sense?

I certainly wouldn't by an iPad case that had a big gap for SIM card changes. I want to forget that slot even exists, and almost never touch it.

Same goes for my iPhone.

Ugh, I can't tell you how tired I am of this ridiculous system of adding basic functionality on a per-app basis.

Photos are intensely personnel and sharing them with friends and family brings great joy to most our lifes. Now that sd cards are in all but the highest and lowest of cameras plus is easy to support for along time to come. Then taking away that dongle, that is probably at "somewhere" and stopping you just showing off a couple of photos you took while out and about one the best screen you have on you.

Apple makes that experience seamless no fuss, "it just works" and part of everyday life, no ad is every going to get people to think about your product as highly as nailing a moment like that in real life.

i'm not all that concerned on an SD slot, even though it would be nice. i think a usb slot would be better though

But then you have to carry at least one thing to get it to work. So two things doesn't make it any worse. As soon as you have to carry the one thing you're not likely to have it with you unless you know your going to use it.

Ugh, so the iPad is going to be red plastic? Gross. Bad move Apple.

kidding.

red is the new white :) (see below)

Not that I think it would have an SD card slot either, although I want it.
It has to be something else. Why would you need a cutout for a sim card slot?
Why would a case need a cutout for the SIM card?? It's not like someone would need to swap SIMs in and out often.
The SIM card slot theory makes no sense. How often does Joe Consumer need to change the SIM card?

Do iPhone cases have SIM card cutouts?
Seriously though, why would anyone in their right mind design a case to give access to the Sim Card???

It is pretty convenient for swapping the SIM card between iPhone4 and iPad ... that way you no longer have to remove the case for that. The matching iPhone4 case will also have that cutout

So iPad 2 is now going to have a 1024x768 display, a 1 mega-pixel camera, and no SD Card slot. What is next to be dropped the rumored A5 processor?

All the previous rumors turned out to be wrong - the iPad2 will be just like the iPad1, only in red (assuming they get the production for red fixed, right now it fades to pink after 2-3 weeks)

Blimey, the rumour press really are jumping around wildly about the iPad 2... Seems to confirm even more that non-one really knows what the hell it's gonna have... I think apple have done a good job hiding the truth amongst the lies... Looking forward to the apple press conference to see what it'll really have. Hopefully double resolution ;) I know, I know... Might as well sigh for the moon, but it doesn't stop me hoping :)

But thats the fun of those rumors and of the weeks before the announcements. All the speculations and discussions around it with no one knowing anything. Hope nobody spoils the fun by showing off a stolen prototype of the iPad2.

Lol yeah you're right there... It does spoil the surprise a bit when they do that!

Meh, don't care... If I'd ever want to use sd cards with an iPad the Camera Connection Kit would do.

Cutout too big for SIM card

If i remember correctly the iPad uses a Micro-SIM card, so Apple would probably keep that form factor for the iPad 2. But the cutout on the side which is marked as "SIM" slot on the picture is far too big for a MicroSIM. Even for a normal SIM it would be a little large.

If at all i would expect the cutout at the top to match a MicroSIM sizewise (and having a DisplayPort up there is a strange conception from the beginning - if you want the iPad to give out video externally, you would use the Dock connector as with every other iOS device).
