Don't do what I did.......

...... I was getting frustrated at the frequently used locations not working and was starting to think there was something wrong with my phone.

I used to check my phone every morning to see if it would let me know how long it would take me to get to work, but alas.... Nothing.

Until I checked it 5 mins into my journey to work and there it was.....

Nice little touch is that from the notification centre screen if you touch the area where your travel ETA is it brings up maps with the traffic heavy roads highlighted in green, yellow and red.

from there you can get full directions to that location and I have to say it was more accurate than the Copilot App on my phone.

Just to make sure this wasn't a fluke I tried it while I was out with the wife at the weekend and it constantly gave me travel times back to the house.

So in short:

Make sure you have both home and work address's under you in your contacts.

Leave Frequent Locations on for 2 -3 weeks to allow it to store your travel habits.

Never check if it works while sitting either in your house or work, you need to be away from these locations for it to assume you are travelling.

These are only my findings so don't shoot me if you find it works differently to me.

Does this work anywhere outside of re US yet....?

It's not country specific. Should work anywhere, as long as there's some traffic info being reported. I've seen users in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, etc.. talk about it working for them.

It also tells you, while you are at home, how long it will take to get to work (on days when it knows you'll be leaving for work soon), and while you're at work, it will tell you how long it will take to get home (starts showing up shortly after the lunch hour).

Travel time just started showing up for me today, Oct 14. My frequent location data goes back to Sept 26, so it took about 2 and a half weeks until it showed up.

just checked mine, first date logged in at 9/29 so hopefully mine will start any time within the next few days, thought mine was going on 3 weeks without showing

Hence why I said as long as traffic info is reported (guess I should have included having Apple Maps work period, but thought that might be self explanatory that maps would need to work for you to get traffic info..) ;)

Settings-->Privacy-->Location Services--> System Services-->Frequent Locations - do you have this turned on?

Yep... Always had it on... Now I turned it off... Seems no point losing battery over it...

Same here on my battery...

Turn Location Services off; reboot and turn back on. That should give you the Next Destination toggle.

I have this same problem. At first I though it was because my phone is set to Japanese, but putting it into English with a US Apple ID did not correct it. I even reset all settings and the notification centre option doesn't display. Location servers (and frequent locations) are set to "on". Anyone else with this issue find a work around to correct it?

Maybe you have to set the location to USA when you set up the phone...

I wonder when Apple will enable traffic/directions in all the countries. I have a similar problem in Dubai....

What is stopping Apple enabling traffic/directions in all the countries ??

Huh, I was not under the impression that this is a US only feature, but sure enough Apple does not show it in their iOS 7 Promotion in Japanese

It's right there in the US English version
http://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/#notification-center

After seeing this, I suspect it only functions if you are in a country that supports it, but why are they not supporting it in Japan and other countries? I can't think of a good reason.

The only possible ideas I can currently think of:
  1. Translators didn't have time
  2. Maybe apple requires traffic data for the location? That would be a crazy oversight
  3. Maybe they want to wait for public transportation ready maps? (would help in Japan, certainly)
  4. It'll come eventually as they update other location specific services (ie. new Siri voice because the Japanese voice is horrific)
  5. Siri fails when Siri language (such as English) cannot understand System or Map Language (such as Japanese). She skips words she cannot read: "calling お母さん's iPhone" becomes "calling iPhone" AND "Take a left on 何々通り" becomes "Take a left on"

However, in the end, I don't see how Next Destination could have been affected by these issues except the time factor. It's a little disappointing, I hope it comes soon!

Maybe language and translation problems like the person below is mentioning... Or maybe they just don't have the data yet...

I hope so too... But, they should atleast give us the option to set a default maps app as it is extremely annoying... Like if someone sends me a location in the whatsapp or elsewhere I can't just tap "directions to here" like I could previously... in iOS6 I had a jailbreak tweak for it to open all such links in the google maps app... I guess I'll just have to wait for the JB to be released...

I guess we are well down on Apple's food chain....... It's a tad annoying, that features which can be used in US and Europe, we can only hear about and not actually be able to use them....

Oh well.....

just got home from work and pulled down my notification center to see a glimpse of traffic conditions in my NC disappear just as quickly as I pulled down NC

They disappear from NC when you reach the place they were giving you info for. So if you're at work, it will tell you how long it will take to get home. Once you get home, the info disappears. You pulling down NC refreshed the info and it determined you were home and no longer needed to show data.

Unless you knew all that..

no I did not... first time I caught it ever in NC why wouldn't it tell me how long it takes to get to work or do you have to leave the home address for that to display
