It goes back to the 3g map debate. While on AT&T you will be able to use data at the same time as on a call, while in 3g coverage, but there are A LOT of places that don't have 3g and with EDGE you are just like VZW - no data and cell use at the same time

I couldn't care LESS about this. I HATE talking on the phone, I try to get off ASAP. I'm not about to surf the web while I'm talking.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the point of talking on the phone to..well..talk on the phone? Not surf the web? Call me crazy, but I didn't even KNOW I couldn't do that until I saw the AT&T commercials. I've truly never had a reason to use the internet while on a phone call.

this makes the verizon iphone 4 a not so good deal unless you're looking to improve your call quality in areas where att doesn't deliver good coverage. i use data and voice simultaneously quite often, and it would be an inconvenience for me.

The odd thing is, that you can be on a Skype Voice call - and still do data.

Well you could, if you are using the standard Skype VOIP app.

The odd thing is that Verizon have some sort of deal with Skype.
- and have Android apps route Skype calls over their voice network.

So the interesting question is going to be - is the regular Skype app going to work on Verizon.

Exactly. I was raised to believe when you are on the phone you give your full attention to that person. It was one of my father's pet peeves. Why are you on the phone with me if you are just off in la-la land while I jabber on?

For me at least, I don't surf while I talk because I'm bored, don't want to talk, etc. I do it because I need some information pertinent to the conversation.

You would be surprised how often you might use that if you had the feature. I've been talking on the phone and looked up e-mails, sent text messages, and looked up phone numbers/addresses/directions to restaurants to people I'm meeting.

I was actually on the phone 10 minutes ago with AT&T to make changes to my account and accessed their website to find exactly the data plan I wanted. Not having that would probably be a deal breaker for me. And I imagine a lot of others who have the iPhone.

i think the verizon iPhone is less for current iPhone users switching to Verizon but for current verizon customers wanting to switch to the iPhone.

the former would care about this new limitation
the latter don't, as they've grown used to it

I guess I see your point -- I just don't think it's a dealbreaker item. Most of the time I'm near a WiFi point anyways (of which I can surf and talk at the same time). If i'm NOT near a WiFi point, I'm driving and not using my phone.

I rarely surf on my phone while talking on the phone. Maybe every once in a while to check movie times, look up an email, etc.

The bigger issue for me seems to be the hotspot thing. I do use my phone to talk all the time while I'm running MyWi. Yes that may drain the battery even faster but it would be pretty annoying to have to stop what your doing on your tethered device (iPad, laptop, etc.) while talking on the phone. I wonder how the VZW hotspot app will handle that.

Overall not a dealbreaker but more a minor/medium annoyance.

Voice + Data is huge for me and others that run a business. I'm on conference calls about once a week, sending emails in real time is the best. Helps me tremendously, sometimes I finish work on the way to the movies. Can't beat that.

If ATT 3G coverage isn't good in your area (there are plenty of places like this) this isn't a issue for any of you because you dot have that feature anyway. If you're like me, you have come to rely on it and 3G is strong here. We're on the list for Verizons LTE so I might think of switching once the iPhone utilizes LTE.

DEAL BREAKER. I currently use a BB and use voice/data at the same time VERY OFTEN. It's 2011 for god's sake. What the hell is wrong with Apple??

Turn off your wifi radio. Make a call. Go to home screen and open browser. Try browsing to any website not in cache. You won't be able to do it.

I search email a lot while talking. I have a small business aside from my job, and I have become very accustom to simultaneous data & voice. Not having it probably wouldn't a huge deal breaker for me(I would definitely miss it), but anyone who says it's not a plus over CDMA is lying to themselves.

the mobile hotspot feature is great..... until a call comes in :D

I hate verizon but competition is great for me as a consumer.... AT&T can't sit back on its heels anymore and guess who benefits from that

Just to clear it up since a lot of people are curious about this: text messages does not use data plan. Hence while on a call you will receive text messages. You will be able to use the built in gps but may not be able to use the application supporting the gps as it may need to send out data.
What you will not be able to do: browse the web, use mms, send/receive emails. Once you hang up, the emails waiting on the server will be pushed.
Same goes with push notifications.

Unless on WiFi -- which, let's face it -- who isn't?

That's the point! Everyone on AT&T who's bloating about this feature is likely on WiFi and not realizing they're not even using the feature!

Finally an intelligent question!

One that far too many closeted Apple zealots haven't the courage to mention, or far more likely, they're too passive and used to having Apple think for them.

Telling them what they can have and when. The perfect customer. Told what to buy, they comply and Apple grows and grows. It's as though they're in a trance.

Yeah! Who cares if it's factually incorrect?! It bashes Apple for no reason!

Because anyone that pays someone else for their expertise is nothing but a Zombie! We should all know everything!

Telling them what they can have and when. The perfect customer. Told what to buy, they comply and Apple grows and grows. It's as though they're in a trance.

Right on! It's telepathic mind control. Offering a product for sale and hoping people buy it! Apple is a devious one.

As mentioned in other posts in this thread, if the phone is being used for a hotspot and a call comes in, data will drop until the call is complete. I have had Sprint phones in the past that would allow you pick which you want to happen - data preference (call would go to vm) or call preference - but I do not yet know if you have this choice on the CDMA iPhone.

I will say, when 4G is available, tethering on the EVO while also being able to make/take calls is a nice feature.
