There are 50 states in the united states, which is a country.

Texas as an example at a time was a country, an independent state: The Republic of texas.

Just awkward phrasing as it reads as "United States States" in this context.

having bought iPhones in the past in both Japan and Hong Kong, this is a great improvement.

in Japan actual commerical scalpers were rare. walk ins from China (in Tokyo for 3 days on tours) would be buying 5 or 6 phones for their extended family and business acquaintances. it created real availability problems for people living in japan.

in Hong Kong however, commercial scalping still is a problem, so although quantities that can be bought by one person are limited, it does create long lines for months and months.

i hope that there are no walk-in purchases allowed in japan for 5 or 6 months. the models of 6s to be sold in japan are unlocked so local contract is not needed, and, the LTE bands are identical to the models to be sold this time in China so definitely these kinds of measures are needed. and muchly welcomed.

Pretty sure it's "4 U.S. States", which means something different than "U.S. States".

U.S. is an abbreviation of United States. Therefore it reads United States States. They could have just said 4 States. It all works really. You don't refer to states as "in the united states". You usually say US States.

That just affects UPS deliveries.

This.

I highly doubt that Apple's freight deliveries to the stores will be affected by the Pope, in NYC or Philadelphia. UPS put out a bulletin for your average Joe home deliveries, primarily those in the "box" in Philly.

Don't go taking this to mean there will be no iPhones in these cities, that just would be bizarre.

A little off topic but I remember the iPad 2 launch literally 20 scalpers in line with about 20 iPads each in hand.

No wonder you couldn't get one for the first few weeks

Here in Utah, that was the story last year. Scalpers were like 75 out of the fist 100 people in line, and they screwed a ton of people looking for a 6+ over because they bought out all the 6+ phones within the first 60 people. I really dislike scalpers.

Sucks for those that actually wanted to camp out in those states though. Hopefully Apple can find a way to control scalping in the future.

The description of the issue is absolutely true. I have been camping out for iPhones for a while now. It often becomes pretty heated in line.

Last year, my group almost got kicked out of the line for standing up for ourselves when a group of 20 people (scalpers) cut in front of us, even though we weren't doing anything wrong. Plus there were shouting matches going on from about 2-3 AM between my group and the scalpers. They even had an undercover cop car drive through a few times, and a cop actually was watching the line all night.

right, after that apple started spreading out the inventory and one could find iPads everywhere.

Do not think it much of problem with iPhone (with China being in the launch country). Once still needs installment/contract or Full Price options ...

Yes, and understandable at that. The states in question don't have a state sales tax. So less out of scalpers' pockets and more of the markup when they sold it. They are curtailing that.

For those in the Portland area, the downside of it is that this screws over anyone in the southwest Washington area (Vancouver, Cowlitz, Battle Ground, Camas, Scappoose, etc.) from walking in on day one to buy an iPhone. All of Oregon's Apple Stores are in the Portland area. So they'd have to make the drive north to the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area, or hit up a carrier.

Sucks for them, but is a valid issue in those states.

Yeah, I live in clark county, and it does suck due to the gas alone would be to much to run up to seattle, to bad they do not have a store on the other side of the river.

Were those scalpers allowed to stay in the line after cutting? That's BS.

what does apple care? They sell a phone either way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Last year at the Delaware store, the police didn't allow a line to form until around 2 am. A mob of people formed and once the line opened it was a stampede of people running, trampling elderly people, and a number of injuries. 95% of the line at the Delaware store is Chinese people hired to buy phones for a shark. The state police and mall security do a poor job of maintaining order a number of people cut in line, and a lot of the scalpers are very unpleasant. It's bad publicity for Apple.

Yeah they were, which aggravated my group and everyone else beyond belief! The security was too spineless to kick them out.

It gets even better though: they made a rule that if ANY member of your group was caught smoking while on the property, the whole group would be kicked out with no warnings.

So guess what? One of the scalper group guys went about 20 feet from the line to smoke (still on the property) so we reported him, and the security guard gave the group a warning and only kicked the guy smoking to the back. Then, about 30 minutes later, the guy came back and cut in line in front of us again. I was fairly irritated with that guy lol

This kind of behavior has been reported for years now. I really don't see why anyone would subject themselves to this, much less wait in line for 12+ hours overnight when one can preorder a phone in a matter of minutes and have it delivered to your door. If going to the store on launch day is that important to someone, you can arrange for personal pickup during the day.

Back when the first few generations were released I understood some saying they like the camaraderie of the experience but that is long gone. The launch day line has simply turned into a business operation for scalpers and a headache for genuine customers.

In New Zealand we'll probably have fifty people lining up in the whole country. There'll be plenty of phones left over here.

Heck, we're still selling iPhone 5C's!

That's ridiculous. I think a group of us would have gotten together and told them they were leaving. Even if we got kicked out, at least they would be gone too.

It was my first time last year, and I always wanted to do it at least once, just for the experience. Unfortunately, that kind of stuff has to happen. Plus I heard all the good stories of fun that people had and figured I should try it.

I was also planning on camping out and upgrading again this year, but due to tuition, I won't be. I did enjoy it for the most part, the people I met were cool, and the Apple Store on launch day is absolutely insane, but I don't know if I'll do it again, even if I have time.

For some of the uninformed here. Guam is considered U.S. Territory, but it's not a U.S. State. Therefore the wording of "U.S States" makes sense as it's referring to the 50 states in the U.S., not U.S. territories.
