right... but the ipad is much bigger.. easier to build. making smaller components is harder. you are fitting all the same tech in a much smaller iphone.. a lot hard to assemble, a lot more expensive to buy parts for etc.

its much cheaper and easier to build an ipad, than an iphone.. thus the prices

Yes, exactly. So if we apply that logic back to the discussion about relative prices between the iPad mini and the iPod touch, it would make sense if they were the same price, or if the mini even cost a little less than the touch.

I have a simple q to end this price speculation soon :) Weren't the invites going to be sent out today according to rumors?

Time is ticking. Assuming Apple doesn't want to miss Thanksgiving, there are only a few weeks left:

Invites: Usually sent out 7-10 days before event

iPad mini Event: ???

Black Friday: Black Friday in 2012 is on Friday, the 23rd of November.

The invites were rumored to go out today. Apple usually sends invites out at 9:00 AM PST. So, if its happening we will find out within the hour.

I doubt Apple cares about competing with price. It will sell no matter what!

There has to be a big enough price difference to make people want the 7" version. A 16GB full iPad starts at $499, who would buy a 16gb iPad Mini when you can have a full iPad for $100 more (assuming they start it at $399 like some have suggested)? Yes, $100 more for storage comes down to personal preference, but I think $100 more for the same storage (16gb/16gb) and a difference in screen size (7.85 to 10.1) and likely non-retina to retina display, would be a no brainer for most.

The entry level iPad mini has to be at least $200 less than the entry level full iPad to sell serious units. $299/16GB makes sense, and also allows to compete with the low end tablet market.

Exactly, and at the same time still being priced 50-100$ more than budget tablets. I guess people will be willing to justify a little higher priced product since it's Apple brand.

gotta have that stamped aluminum back shell...

despite the entire front being held together with the same adhesive used on "plasticky" tablet LOL

I'd bank on $399 being the starting point. For that price it damn well better beat the resolution of other 7" tablets.

For the WiFi iPad Mini, I'd LIKE to see:

16gb: $299
32gb: $399
64gb: $499

but I think we will see:
16gb: $349
32gb: $449
64gb: $549

If they really want to go after the Kindle/Nook and capture that e-reader market, they need to have a starting price of $199.. or $250, TOPS. I walk into Barnes and Noble about once a week and right in front of my face is this lovely Nook tablet that has an HD screen, tons of apps, and is $199. I can totally see someone buying that on impulse instead of continuing to wait until they can afford a $600 iPad. I've almost done it myself a couple times.

These Kindle and Nook tablets are also going to children and to grandma, who will enjoy it and not give a crap about specs or aluminum/glass prettiness. Want to get them into the Apple ecosystem? Gotta price it right.

And if they want to sell 10M mini's in Q4 this year, they will have to lower the price to $199. Sorry, there is no way otherwise.

You guys are on crack. There is no way the mini will cost that much. The whole reason they're making it, is to compete with the $199/$299 market. If people had $399, they would just buy a regular iPad 2. I think the higher end models of the mini will be $399, but I think the entry level will be $299 or even $249. It will be 16GB, wifi only, probably not retina display.

Predicting $249 price for 8 GB model... We will find out soon.

I think $349 too, I just can't see Apple pricing it along with the new touch.

Another instance where "more" isn't necessarily better. Pointing to 20 sites that are just parroting the same source doesn't really bolster the rumor.

Makes sense. I hadn't seen any saying that until now...

I fell behind on following any rumors that weren't on MR because of Playoff Baseball. Go Cardinals!

What's the point in selling 10 million of anything if you don't make a profit on it? I don't believe Apple will make a profit at $199, not unless it is a loss leader for the higher capacity versions - I just don't see it. Besides, at $199 for a non-retina 8GB tablet, there's nothing differentiating you from everyone else.
