No excuse, AC should be available on the iPhone5s.

Apple is usually the company that introduces the new standards first, so this is very surprising to me.

Of you've just released a spanking new router with wonderful AC, then your new devices should support it.

I believe it comes down to margins, as it always does with apple.

LOL what planet do you come from?

Late to the party with 3G, LTE, USB3, Blu-Ray. I feel like I'm missing more, but I haven't had my morning coffee yet.

Benefits of 802.11ac should be better penetration and range in a home via "beam forcing". Which should increase efficiency.

Plus it's faster. Not a lot of people max out their ISP speeds so that's not a benefit but if you have a lot of in network transfers going on then you could see benefits.

With AppleTV, Time Capsule, and really a lot of in network transfer stuff I'm surprised Apple isn't pushing this harder.

Throw NFC on that list. The only technology where Apple has been on the cutting edge is Bluetooth.

This was actually the only other than screen size that was a surprise to me.

It was a surprise since new Airport supports ac, so obviously the tech is there.

I suspect it has to do with battery life.

Greater range possibilities is worth AC alone.

And yes, not everyone has an AC router but I do, so I care. Not a deal killer either way. I am not ready for an upgrade and the features of 5s wasnt enough to entice me to move. Even if it had included 802.11ac.

Wifi AC is a gimmick for now. 99.9% of the people on earth probably don't even have connections fast enough to make use of wifi AC.

There is nothing wrong with wifi N so stop complaining for something you dont even need

What some dimwits in here don't understand is that WiFi AC is just a bullet point feature for phones. The internal NAND will not even saturate wireless N. Why the hell include AC? it won't cause anything to move faster...

This is 100% FALSE. First, as with any wireless technology the theoretical limit and the actual transfer rate are VERY different. If you get half of the performance of the N spec on any device consider yourself lucky.

Also, there a videos of the Lighting connected iPhone 5 getting close to 30MB/s. You won't even get close to that on N. But you can exceed that on AC.

Someone please provide me with an example of how 802.11ac would improve the iPhone experience...

Faster internet? No. Your broadband internet (5-50 Mbps) is the bottleneck, not your 802.11n (150-300 Mbps)

Faster intranet? Yes, but what good does that do?

Greater WiFi range? Debatable. 802.11ac works only on 5 GHz band, which has less penetration through walls. It compensates for this by 'beamforming', but ultimately the 802.11n 2.4 GHz band still will have greater range.

So yes, it would be 'cool' to have 802.11ac...but practically speaking, it wouldn't really do much.

----------

Now to answer my own question, 802.11ac could possibly reduce AirPlay latency, enabling more real-time experiences between iOS devices and the Apple TV (e.g., gaming).

it's not only about speed. The new beamforcing feature alone is worth the upgrade. Rather than sending a signal equally in all directions, beamforcing detects for wireless devices and intensifies the signals in that direction.

Fast sync speeds and theoretical lower battery consumption are the two benefits I want. Also, it would be nice to turn off unneeded bands to reduce interference or utilize those bands for something else. Geeky I know but I like to run a simple config specific to my needs.

i think a lot of folks are missing the point here. apple sells wifi ac routers. they put that ability into their new mac book pros and airs earlier this year. of course people expected it to be on the 5s. i know people here love apple but seriously now, why are people defending them for not including this feature that would negligibly increase cost for them. a feature that they were selling the benefits to us just a few months ago

All will be forgiven by me if the M7 chip proves worth it's inclusion. I was bummed about no AC because i'm gonna buy the new AEX soon. However I don't have much fear of upgrading in a year if I have to.

Really hoping the next iPads have 11ac though. I'm in the market next spring for a Haswell Retina MBP and that will surely have 11ac.

I'm a product manager. If my product is inferior is some way shape or form I have a couple paths to make up for it.

1) Convince you that you don't need that feature (until I have it)

2) Convince you that the system as a whole is better despite the gap in one area

3) Convince you I will have it in the future and it will be better, therefor worth waiting for.

#3 doesn't work in the case of a phone. It is hardware and not upgradeable, with most people locked in for some time.

Natural reaction is #1. I never want to admit my product has gaps (who wants to admit their baby is ugly?). This is Apple. In fact Apple takes it to an extreme. They never admit they are wrong. They convince you they are giving you everything that you need.

The Apple fan base trends the same way because it's human nature.

People who don't understand this decision don't understand Apple. Apple is NOT cutting edge. Apple refines existing technologies with a combination of existing tech and new patents.

This is about usability. If the inclusion of AC would have reduced battery life without a negligible performance improvement for 99.9% of customers (or even 90% of customers) Apple likely never gave it serious consideration.

I've been following Apple closely for fifteen years. As a result, I knew before this product announcement that AC would not be included. That just isn't Apple's corporate identity.

this is what separates fans from fanatics on this site

No reason? Perhaps they couldn't find energy efficient AC chips, meaning those that don't drain battery like a leech? Perhaps prototypes wouldn't work well with iOS in time for launch? Perhaps Apple doesn't feel AC on a phone, vs a laptop, isn't much of a necessity?

There are reasons Apple does what it does. And nerd raging on a forum isn't going to help.
