Mr. Ballmer

brands he is bringing:
Bing
Office
XBox Live

Wow, these just happen to be the last 3 things that I want to do on a mobile phone.

I think your forgot one obvious brand there... you know, the only brand Nokia is interested in from the deal. The largest software title in the world brand.

Not that I'm saying it will be something you want on your phone, though.

;)

Nokia has a huge customer base and generally makes good hardware.

And MS doesn't have a huge customer base? If, if, IF they make something really good and interoperable with Windows workstations, plus some new inventive features and say free music, port some MS games, who knows...

But, can they bring themselves to the level of the iPhone as far as market perception goes?

Something no one but Apple can do. No one can match their brand perception.

MS' management and vision precludes this from ever happening. And Nokia? I dunno. I think "Nokia" and I either feel sleepy or pity. Pick yer poison.

This is great. Nokia has international presence & Windows Phone 7 is actually nice.

Both companies need each other - Nokia needs good software, Microsoft needs to reach a wider audience.

Competition is the best. For all you Apple fanboys, you really want iPhone to dominate like how the iPod did (ex. Look at the current Nano, they drop tons of features & put an unnecessary touchscreen on it).

Again... their challenge (as with others) is not to match the iPhone but to surpass the iPhone in market perception.

WM7 was dead out of the shoot... MS needed this bad. At least they will gain some market share. But maybe too little too late for both of them.

Make no mistake, this deal ensures Microsoft will be competing with Apple and Google in a very serious way in the mobile space.

Spot on! While Apple and Google have been slogging their asses and innovating like crazy, learning, thinking, designing, brainstorming, overtime hours,.... MS just sat out, lazily farting in a pizza box, now made a partnership deal and already they are No1 (based on some numbers and stats).

Nokia and Microsoft deserve each other ... two companies who think that execution has been their only problem.

So, an executive from Microsoft (Stephen Elop) leaves to become the CEO of Nokia, then magically they dump most of their in house development and run to M$ for help. How convenient!

This makes a lot of sense. Microsoft has a great (but late to market) product with too little marketshare. Nokia has huge (residual) marketshare but noncompetitive products.

Still, seems like Microsoft has everything to gain and Nokia everything to lose. Even if this 'partnership' takes off Nokia will become just another commodity hardware producer.

There's also an in-built tension in Microsoft's desire to keep the platform unified versus Nokia's desire to innovate and stand out with unique hardware. A large part of WP7s current appeal is the iPhone-esq common hardware standard.

Definitely the right move for Nokia. I just hope that they can bring their own unique slant to WP7 devices.

Elop may want to work with MS, but do the rest of Nokia? He has to depend on the alignment of Nokia engineers to make this work.

In any event, I don't know if I wanted to be relegated to building just hardware platforms unless I really sucked at creating software...

Most of the Nokia software engineers will get the boot. Hardware engineers will be happy to still have a job. This is an insanely big move for Nokia. WP7 is barely lifting off, still waiting for a lot of key features but once they get rolling, the sheer volume Nokia is able to bring to the table will make for a big competitor for Apple and Android. RIM will be seriously outgunned.

Definitely better than going with Android and just being another device in a pack of choices. Good luck to Nokia and Microsoft! Competition isn't a bad thing.

I can see this being a great thing, Nokia's hardware has nearly always been brilliant and top of the line, while their OS has been clunky and not as easy to use.

WP7 has been the only smartphone OS that I have thought I could see myself using if I wanted to switch from iPhone.

Nokia is still a widely used and respected brand name in the phone world.

Who ARE all these Nokia phone users anyway? I work on a college campus, and from what I've seen students using, the phone landscape here is dominated by iOS, Android, and Blackberry. I haven't noticed ANY Nokia phones whatsoever. Hell, I've even noticed several Palm Pres!

I look at the chart showing Nokia's dominance and it doesn't seem to jive with what I see in reality.

WP7 + Nokia Hardware = colour me VERY interested.

Nokia isn't as popular in the US as they are everywhere else in the world.

To the office of Mr. Low-Expectations

i am quite disappointed by this - i have been faithful to nokia for the reason that they have done their own thing and not conformed to the iOS like side of things. i refuse to buy an iphone because there is no qwerty keypad - and android is oh so ugly.

no where do i go!? :(

Fortunately your expectation are really really low and about anything will make you happy. You don't care about apps or productively, windows 7 with a KEYboard will be great for you.

This should boost both companies. More competition is always a good thing, but in this instance (as a WP7 user) I really hope that the added capital from Nokia allows MS to speed up development schedules for WP7.
