After working at Apple, Microsoft & Verizon, I must admit in all those years I have never heard a customer tell me that a television commercial influenced their smartphone purchase.

I've never heard someone admit that a television commercial influenced their toilet paper purchase either, but there are some really smart people convinced that advertising does work.

Clearly you've never touched or even seen a premium Nokia device. Nokia phones are higher quality than an iPhone in every department. Stop being so childish and think that the iPhone is the greatest invention. It's not.

Nobody in their right mind will carry around an SLR every single day. The best camera is the one that you have with you at all times. SLR is not one of them, your phone is. When you go to a party at night, do you always carry around an SLR with you? iPhone's camera is not adequate enough, not anymore. Times are changing, OIS is now a required feature. iPhone still carries a useless single LED flash. Yes, iPhone was a good phone once.. That time has passed and Apple hasn't innovated anything regarding the iPhone since iPhone 4.

Low light photography in smartphones and cameras in general will be the main specs in the future to come.

When the lens size is pretty much the same and the sensor isn't that much bigger, the quality difference is going to be pretty negligible. 41 megapixels.. yippee.. it's still not going to have as much detail as a 20 megapixel SLR.

The iPhone 5's camera is pretty solid. You're never going to get great low light performance with the puny sensor size they use in phones until the sensor is at least APS-C sized.

This commercial makes me like my iPhone 5's camera more.

The "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" commercials never bashed any companies or products directly, nor did it directly say apple was "better". PC is not a brand, it's a generalization. A Mac is technically a PC as well, but they wanted to send a message that they weren't like the others. If you remember how the commercials went it just made Mac look like it was more fun, but not necessarily better.

What Nokia is doing is very different from that, and not in a good way, lol.

Wtf

what the hell is wrong with Nokia comparing iPhone 5?iPhone 5 was 2012's phone and Nokia 925 is released this year..what is wrong with Nokia? -.- even though you compare iPhone 5's camera to Nokia925's camera, people are still using the iPhone 5,and you think that the camera is the only thing that you can only attract people with, then go **** with yourself Nokia! If i had a choice,I would definitely choose the iPhone 5 even though it is a 2012 phone =) and seriously Nokia, stop comparing iPhone to your stupid ass phone, even Apple is better in their commercials, they don't compare. So mature up Nokia, and the ad that you guys made (Nokia) is very different from Apple, and it's very bad -.-

So you are comparing a smartphone camera with a SLR... Is it so hard to admit that Nokia has better camera than iPhone 5? 1020 has about 4 times bigger sensor than that of iPhone's. 1/3.2 vs 2/3.

I never tried to say it wasn't. I bet it is, and I hope the next iphone's camera is better too, but I was saying for me the difference in the quality of those cameras aren't worth me having to use a windows phone.

If I really care about image quality I'm using my SLR.

Well oversampling is one way to partially overcome the inherent issues of Bayer arrays. When you shoot red, green, or blue objects of high saturation values, your effective resolution really takes a considerable drop. You can see it with grass, skies, and tacky garments.

sorry, but for me, the important part is that my mobile phone is, in fact, my mobile phone, and not just my camera. I've tried windows phone, and it doesn't even come close to iOS. of course I know that my iPhone's camera isn't the best of all phones, but it's certainly good enough for me. if I ever wanted to take really good pictures, I'd take an actual camera with me, anyway.

To be truly scientific, you'd have to do what my son did with my phone: turn on the lightsaber app and start flinging the phone around like a weapon until it flies out of his hand, smashes into the wall and falls to the hardwood floor.

And you have to do that twice. :D

Amazingly, both times my iPhone came away with hardly a scratch. I know that's not typical, but I'm still amazed when I remember how it sailed across the room at high speed into the wall and right to the floor. Thought it was trashed both times.

I have since removed the lightsaber app, FWIW.

LOL! those lightsaber apps, what a menace!

Performance is one thing, software is another. I've found metering on my 4s to be pitiful - there's no reason why the shutter (which I imagine is electronic) can't be extended when light is low. Sure hand shake becomes an issue, but there's nothing new there.

Performance with these tiny-ass sensors could be significantly better if the pixel-count race madness were abandoned, but unfortunately Joe Consumer mistakenly thinks that 8MP is better than 1MP.

there are apps for that: LongExpo and Night Modes

----------

First, that's not an old saying, it's by Chase Jarvis from 2009.

it most certainly is an old saying

my memory of it goes back to the mid 90s at least

Anyone who has used both a Nokia (lets say the 920) and an iPhone knows that the Nokia takes better pictures by miles.

It's the rest of it that's a problem. WP8 just isn't mature enough. I hope that changes. Better yet Nokia could and should just start launching these same phones under different OS's.

But in terms of just comparing cameras? Not even close, Apple could learn a few things from Nokia's camera phones.

Good for you, but what is your point. Other than Army Rangers, campers, etc. who eats dinner regularly with a Swiss Army Knife?

Same goes for cameras. I don't carry my dSLR around with me everywhere I go, but when I go to a big event or a leisurely photoshoot, no pocket cam I have, including the one in my phone, competes w/ my dSLR.

That *is* my point. The Swiss Army knife is always there if you need it.
But there are always better alternatives (if they are available.)

Are we all happy now?

----------

It's kinda spelled out in big block letters for you.

For a group of people who claim they're willing to spend a lot more to get the best product, some of you all are really quick to defend good enough to middling when someone else does something better.

And this is bothers you so much because... why exactly?

But no, iPhone isn't "a lot more" than any other smartphone.
What, $100 more at most? And how much does the average consumer pay year on their cell contract?
$1200? That's $2400 for 2 years on contract (with AT&T in the US anyway.)
And $100 comes to 1/24th of that, or roughly 4.167% of just the cell plan.
I'd gladly pay 4.167% more to get the best cell phone experience.
Whether or not its camera has the highest pixel count.

You're trying to perpetuate two tired old myths: the "Apple Tax myth" and the "megapixel myth".
Shame on you.

is that the only thing that's better about a brand new product compared to last year's model? I'm sure the next iPhone will have a much improved camera that will probably compete with this one.

And what about the apps on the Nokia? Hardly any.

I'm sure it's got a decent camera. But that's not the only reason to buy a smartphone.

----------

So it's got a better camera. Is that all? I use my phone for a LOT more than just a camera. I'm sure the next iPhone to compete with this one has an improved camera. Products improve every year and they are comparing a brand new product against a 10 month old product? Wait until this year's iPhone comes out and THEN compare. I'm sure there will be little difference.

Except that that iPhone doesn't exist yet. And when it comes out, then the Nokia fans could say "wait a minute, the comparison is completely unfair, you are comparing a brand new iPhone against a 4 month old Lumia". Technology is just like that, so that kind of arguments doesn't seem to be very logical.

On the other hand, yes, obviously a smartphone is more than a camera, but I don't see anyone claiming that this Lumia model is better the iPhone 5. My only complaint is how difficult is to the Apple fanboys to recognize that other brands may be sometimes superior in certain aspects. An ad points that out. So? I don't think is that difficult to deal with.

Those commercials clearly were bashing Windows. I think anyone with at least a two digits IQ may say that.

I'm happy to see a commercial that shows the true faults of the iPhone versus its competition. The iPhone's low light camera performance is my biggest gripe.

Actually even Nokia is beaten by older Nokia phones. 2010 Symbian N8 is better than 925 and iPhone 5. Nokia 808 is better than Lumia 1020, except when capturing videos when L925 and L1020 take some advantage over the Symbian phones because of the OIS.

They did indeed, they were caught out by a reflection of a full camera crew in a van, when it was meant to be a guy shooting video whilst riding a bike.

Oh, Haha! Yeah, that's right, that was pretty funny.

Those commercials clearly were bashing Windows. I think anyone with at least a two digits IQ may say that.

And they did mention "Vista" a time or two.

Talking back to Mac vs. PC ad, I love PC personification better than the Mac. It's snobby and hipster. PC is doing all the funny and lovable stuff alone.

If I were a woman and in time to pick a husband between both, I'd marry the PC anyday.

I have N8. I won't call it better than iPhone4, but it sure has the best phone camera at that time.

In fact, I think the camera design used on 1020 had been done on this N8, including oversampling, optical zoom, protruding housing and the seemingly excessive amount of pixels (16MP).

So N8 was the prove for Nokia that the idea of super camera on a smartphone is doable, working, and can be sold commercially rather than a boutique/professional devices. Nokia fans still looking back fondly upon this phone if what they say on Nokia board is anything to go by.

Now, thinking about it, would you call 1020 an heir to N8?

Hello! Firstly, N8 has a 12MP sensor and not 16MP. I'd call it better than iPhone5 in terms of image quality as its sensor is way bigger and despite of the larger aperture on the Apple's phone, the N8 is an overall winner in terms of dynamic range, noise, better crop possibilities and so on. It's a fact and you can check yourself by looking at gsmarena's comparing tool.

I think Lumia 1020 is a competitor on par with Galaxy S4, but Nokia 808 has a better camera for still images. Lumia 1020 appears to be great in videos thanks to its OIS, but Nokia 808 is still better than all other counterparts in terms of video capturing/lossless 1080p zoom.

Hopefully L1020 will be a success so there are chances that we will get a true successor of Nokia 808 in future models. If I had to choose between 808 x 1020 x N8, I would get a 808.

why dont they make an ad comparing their lumia and the iphone 5 in terms apps, oh sorry, i forgot, windows phones dont have apps, do they?
