Hey all- i'll try and make it short and sweet:

I've seen some threads suggesting that DDR3 (NON-ECC) ram will work with the 5,1. People have apparently gotten it to work.

Here are my current system specs:

Mac Pro 5,1 (2012)
1x Xeon X5680
16GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC
Radeon RX 590 8GB

I'm looking to upgrade to 32GB soon- would regular, non-ecc ram be a good option? I main just use my Mac Pro for games and light video editing.

Thanks!

Non-ECC DDR3 is pricier than ECC Registered RAM pulled from servers. No buys unbuffered non-ECC RAM for use with a MP5,1, it's pricier than pulls and you will have serious trouble finding the right memory bank config to get 32GB.

i have upgraded my CPU and i believe now i can use from 1066 ram to 1333 . I had 8x4gb rams but after the update i inserted only 6 of them . is it better for performance to use the 6 slots and also will it worth to upgrade the rams from 1066 to 1333 ?

ECC Registered RAM pulled from servers

As Alex said - server pulls sold through eBay are free from potential risks, better quality and when I was looking for 8x 8GB on ebay last week it was USD $15 per stick for Samsung DDR3 Fully buffered ecc 1333. that's USD $120 for 64GB.

16GB DDR3 ECC chips can be found for around $22ish each and can easily jump your system to 48gb, leveraging triple channel for the best performance. Opinions are like old Mac Pro's, there are a lot of them. With that in mind I've found that Samsung 2R4 offers the best price/performance. be sure to get 3 of the same chip part# to get the best performance.
