It's these stories that make me glad I went with an Otterbox Defender, even though I have Apple Care. I'm clumsy and paranoid, and the nearest Apple store is a few hours away. I would love to use my iPad naked, or with a minimalistic case, but I'd hate to mess it up and be without.

My sister had one of those huge, bulky Otterbox cases for her iPhone. All the babying she did with that thing, she walks away for a few seconds.. Someone picks up her phone to take a picture and falls in the swimming pool with it.

Seriously, you're going to cheat the system and buy Applecare now? And what's this about "is Apple going to hose me" crap? You bought a product, it got damaged because you were negligent, and now you're asking for advice on how to not take responsibility? I have a 4 year old and 1 year old at home, and I certainly try and set a better example than that. See if you can fix it yourself, if not, take it to Apple, find out the repair cost, man up and pay it.

32gig, 4g... hit the nightstand right on the volume button, punching it in and rendering the machine useless as the volume image is on screen and volume at zero all the time.....

Thoughts? Apple gonna hose me or should I try to take the case apart and fix myself? (if I can get it apart safely, I can straighten the case)....

Return the daughter, get a new one.

If they're 6 and under. Never let them see that you have one. Or they'll never let you play with it

It's a risk to let young kids handle ipad. and accidents happen with adults too. but I wouldn't let a kid carry a $700 diamond ring outside, and I wouldn't let a young kid use the new iPad unless seated in a safe carpeted space. that's just me.

LOL $700 diamond ring?...poor wife:(

replace daughter.... hahahaha just kidding. Thats a tough one... I would say go to the apple store and tell them exactly what happened, I've read stories of people who drop their iPads by accident and sometimes they will swap them out of niceness hahah so might as well try your luck before doing anything else.

oh and next time buy a good protective case :D

I dropped a square glass coaster on my 13" macbook air screen 3 weeks after I bought it. It was a wet cup that picked up the coaster and as I moved it across the table, it fell on the screen and caused 2 cracks on the screen.

I brought it to the apple store and they said they'd send it in for repair. When the repair center called me and said it was going to be $780 to repair, I asked very politely if I could speak with a manager.

When they put me in touch with a manager, I spoke candidly and honestly about what had happened and that I understood where they were coming from. Then I asked if there was any remote possibility for apple to make a one time exception for a long time customer, having just bought 4 macbook pro/air laptops (2 for family, one for wife, one for myself) and 2 iPad 3rd gen within the past year.

She ended up calling the apple store and came up with an arrangement--close out the repair job under my name; open up a new one to bill the repair center for the cost; I pay $0. She even apologized several times for making me wait almost an hour on the phone to get the arrangement put through.

The key is being polite so they'd be open to the idea of putting themselves into your shoes.

Did you happen to pay for it with a credit card that offers purchase protection? If so, they'll cover it.

I did but after the laptop was damaged, I had to go away for a business trip and then had a bunch of work projects. I called the credit card company 5 days after the 90-day accidental damage period expired.

The OP might have some recourse here.

Unlucky, hope it's not too expensive to fix

I spent extra care explaining to my 2,5 and 6 year olds about my iPad 2, and was often nervous when they used it. After all that, guess who dropped it and shattered the glass? Me.

Take your daughter with you and make her ask for a replacement. Ask her to apologise to the genius, I think it will work. Just make sure to stand behind her shaking your head and tutting.

For the record, I am fully aware that i am going to be burned at the stake for this but oh well...

All the people with the "getting AppleCare afterwards is fraud". Does it drain you having to wear that halo all day? I'd like you to tell me you also haven't returned something to Walmart without a receipt outside of the return window too. I'm guessing you also man up to every traffic violation you've ever made to a cop when you get pulled. Everyone screws the system at one point in their life at least. Give the guy a break (no pun intended). Besides, unless they specifically ask him on the phone if there is any damage to the device when he orders the AppleCare he is technically not being dishonest anyway. But damn...macrumors forums somehow became filled with the holiest of the holy.

I have 2 kids (6 and 11) and NOBODY buy Daddy touches my iPad 3. I don't care if my sons begs or whines, its not happening.

I put my iPhone 4S in an Otterbox case when he wants to play Angry Birds.

I would do what the posters above have said: call and buy AppleCare+, wait a few days, and then go to the store. I would not try to fix it yourself.
Just wait till they get older.....lol

This is why our society is going to pot.

Just man up and pay for the repair. Jeeesh.

just playing by the rules man. if it was required for every unit to get inspected it would say that.

----------

hmm..buying insurance after the incident... FRAUD.

where does it say that the unit has to be damage free within the 30 days? Where does it say that if you call in it has to be inspected as well...it doesn't. It's not going to matter bc you then use your 1 claim within 30 days so you only have 1 left for 2 more years. They made the rules

Wow... interesting dialog....

So, this will answer a bunch of the feedback....

I was actually more proud of my daughter calling me at work to own up than I was mad about our new toy getting broken. Being the generally honest guy that I am (yes, I still make mistakes, but I do own up to every traffic ticket etc.) I called Apple and told them exactly what happened. They said the repair bill would be $299 and I'd get a new one (refurb I presume). He OFFERED that I could still get applecare+ (not fraud) and then the repair would end up costing me $149 instead of $299. Given that we broke it and it was in no way Apples fault, that seemed reasonable, so I bought the Apple care. I would have loved to have them do for free given my many Apple purchases (currently 3 phones, 4 imacs, 1/2 dozen ipods, 2 ipads), but since is was our fault, I didn't try to get something for nothing... They can afford it a lot better than me, but its an ethics thing.....

As a former machinist/fabricator/engineer, i'm pretty handy, and while on the phone with with Apple and using various little tools I have, I was able to demangle the case to get the volume button working (no, I didn't open the case). Doesn't look good and I'll eventually turn it in for a new one, but for now we at least have a working machine that still looks fine unless you look at the volume button...

----------

BTW, for me there is no "technically" in honesty. You either are or your aren't. Its not the letter, its the spirit.... I totally owned up, and they gave me a fair deal. One good turn deserves another. Ocassionaly I get burned, but at least I know I did what's right....

Hmmm, I'm planning on going to the Apple store tomorrow to get AppleCare+ on my iPad (this will be Day 13 since purchase). The rep that sold me the iPad said that I have 30 days to buy Applecare+. I hope that he was right. Nothing is wrong with my iPad, no damage, etc. I'll take it with me so that they can inspect it.

OP, I'm glad things worked out for you. It makes me nervous to see small children with expensive devices: I saw a friend's two year old was walking around with her Droid, and when she lost interest, she just threw it on the ground.

My kids are responsible/careful.. could have happened to me too....

You can just order applecare online... not need to go in or get inpsections...

Yes I know exactly what you mean by that.
I preach this to my son all the time.
Glad you got it worked out and you are right to be proud of your daughter.

I'm glad youre getting It fixed! I don't have children, so I can say anything about that, but Im glad she takes after her father and is responsible for her mistakes. It's nice that they let you get apple care even after it was broken (so pooey on all you "omg its fraud" people)
