I have been unhappily delaying to just go ahead & order the Noreve Tradition Leather folio case, because I really want the "rails" style of holding the iPad in (instead of covering up the bezel with more leather). Thanks to forum member FDCP for the great review & very detailed pictures -- much appreciated -- now I am hesitant to order the Noreve since you mentioned it is not very stable when standing up for watching videos. (And I do want to be able to touch the screen without having to be very careful not to knock over the Pad while it's standing up -!)

I've done a lot of searching online -- so far, the only other folio-style cases I've seen that have something like Noreve's rails are the SGP Vintage (which doesn't function as a typing stand) and the XgearLive Folio, which I kinda like except for the ugly pattern on the exterior. I want to give this as a gift for a dear friend in the UK, & would much rather send something leather than the carbon fiber Xgear folio.

I've also seen some really great stuff on the website of this company called "Ozaki" -- in particular a case called the "iCoat," in addition to *many* other wonderful designs. Very sad that I don't see any way to buy any of their items in the US:

That iCoat is sweet. Anyone heard when it's coming out?

Sounds to me like they confirmed the vintage leather for the iPad case will be show the same wear which is to be expected. I personally like it and think it adds character. :)

Yeah, that is basically the bottom line -- I should have asked more specifically if there is some reason this is normal wear & tear, or...? I guess it has been a long time since I last bought anything suede -- and now that I think more about that, I seem to remember that suede is not really very long-lived, in terms of the texture. It's too bad, though -- I would want the finish to last longer than a few months on an iPad case. I like how it looks when it's still suede..

So -- might as well just buy the stock "Perpetual" finish, since it is smooth to begin with.

Hi DaneGuy -
I have heard nothing -- I wish there was an easy way to communicate with Ozaki & find out when this will be available for US iPad owners. I haven't tried to get in touch with them, mainly because I'm in a hurry to buy a case ASAP, & unfortunately I think they are not yet set up to sell to US customers. If you are willing to follow up with them, I'd be grateful to hear what you find out.

I just noticed there's a "Contact Us" button in the upper right corner of the iCoat webpage --
here's the link again:

Thanks!

Vintage would show more wear

By the look of the Vintage, and other cases I've had over the years in similar finish, it would show more wear and look, well, more vintage. These types of leather are very difficult to keep clean and lighter colours show the grease a lot. I always think they look old when you get them out of the box. Put it this way I would never buy a suede jacket again, same thing here for me. ;)

My case is 800 miles away and the driver set off at 5.30am, so still on course for Wednesday delivery:D

I actually prefer the way it looks once it has aged. I was tempted to buy the Sandy Vintage and then spend some time with oily hands trying to get it to age more quickly! In the end I opted for the beautifully textured Ambition leather.

Ordered one!

since I was too chicken for the suede vintage leathers stayin clean I went with Ambition Ebony

lets see how long it will take

You can also use promo code 'generationmp3' to get 15% off - around 6 Euro in my case which is almost the shipping cost to Germany

I ordered the Sandy Vintage style on 5/18 and received the shipping notice on 6/6.

I ordered one of these today, seems like the best fit for what my needs are. I'm hoping the quality is decent and it doesn't take a month to arrive.

Case should be here tomorow, plenty of Noreve pics ASAP

Well, I've just checked my shippping details and my white noreve tradtional iPad case is just miles away after its trip across france, due for delivery tomorow some time. I'll get plenty of pics tomorow and I'll put it through it's passes with the functionality of the stand and keyboard mode. I'll also get some boxed/unboxed shots for those who like to see the packaging, you know who you are:p

Any bits of the case you want close-ups of please post tonight and I'll do my best to get them set-up for you. It's white leather that I've ordered so some of the front shots might look, well, a bit white,

Just thinking, wonder if it comes with the famouse Noreve belt clip, cooool, :D

Catch you tomorow all being well.

I'm looking forward to this. I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for shipping details.

Hi there Colophon -

thanks, it looks like quite a few of us are looking forward to your report tomorrow!

Here's a specific request for a photo:

To help us get a sense of how much bulk is added to the iPad when it's in the Noreve case, how about taking a few photos of it lying on a table next to a real book? I'm thinking perhaps both a paperback book and a hardback book, of similar thickness to the iPad + case: and this will be most effective if you could position the camera looking at the *edge* of the case & book(s). For instance -- you could place the iPad in its case on the edge of a table, right next to a book -- and then shoot the photo so that we see the edge of the table, and the height of the book & iPad. I'm guessing they will be around 2 inches thick, but it would be wonderful if less than this.

Thanks again!

No problem, I'll see what I can do

No problem I'll get this case from all angles, don't worry about that. I'll do a book shot for you and a DVD shot so you can all see the true size of the case. I know what you mean about the thickness, I don't think it will be 2 inches but who knows, lol

There is always some padding to the cases from Noreve but not usually that extensive, we'll see I guess. I'm hoping that the delivery is early but I'm usually last on the list, you know how it is.

If I have time I might do a video, bit pushed for doing videos at the moment but I'll see.

Ok, that's me signing out till tomorrow and the big wait, ha. Catch you all soon, keep you posted.

The iPad in the Norêve case is just under three quarters of an inch thick. It certainly doesn't look or feel thick at all.

Wow, that's great! A *lot* thinner than I had imagined -- so, now I feel much more willing to order it all the way from France. Thanks for letting us know!

And, I'm still looking forward to seeing Colophon's review & photos after he receives his case tomorrow.. :)

I'd say the quality is pretty solid, and I'm quite happy with the case. The vertical viewing issues appear to be from a design flaw, or at least it doesn't function as well as it should. As for the laid down position, as I posted in the images before, it doesn't appear to sit at as good of an incline as the images on the Noreve website.

I'm hoping this was what you were asking for?

noreve011.jpg

Yeah, that appears to be the only way to get it standing upright. The issue I see here, is that it's less about the magnetic latch being closed, and more about the clip resting on the flaps edge, just barley holding it up. I'd imagine this would wear out quickly:

noreve010.jpg

It does hold up, but I could see it falling back if too much pressure was used on the screen. Again, I'm not sure if it's a design flaw, or if we're doing something wrong, but there doesn't appear to be any other way to get it standing upright.

I don't have the official Apple case, but I did take this bottom profile image of the case with the latch closed:

noreve012.jpg

Hi again, to member scgf:

I just looked back to page 3 of this thread & realized that forum member "FCDP" has posted photos taken from the angle I requested. The case does appear to be not as thick as I had feared. :)

Since you have the case already, can you comment on the concerns mentioned above by FCDP? Specifically, how easy is it to tip over the case when it is standing up for watching videos? I am a bit confused about how well (or not) the strap & snap work to hold the case upright, as described & depicted in FCDP's post (see quote).

Also -- what is your guess as to the weight of the case together with the iPad?

Thanks again!

OK, it arrived and it's going straight back,

Notice no pictures, I'm am so sorry to inform you that this case is bad, I mean really bad compared to the Noreve I used to deal with.

The UPS van pulled up, I got all excited, as you do. I touch the package into the living room ready for some photos. I touch the picture of the box that it can in, nice box with Noreve on the front, good start. Then I made the mistake of opening the box, "ow boy" I thought as the flawed leather loomed out of the darkness. My heart sank like a stone.

Ok so my new case is white leather and white shows all the little things that black hides from you. Right, all the white cases I've had from Noreve in the past have been great, really great, soft, even leather, perfect. Not this one.

The leather forms some nice creases towards the top end of the stitching, that forms the front part of the nonexistent vertical stand feature (ow that's another story). This looks a proper mess.

The back of the case looks like it has been glued together by my daughter who is 14 weeks old (no offence Milly but you isn’t the greatest with hand eye coordination yet). Totally uneven with some nice glue lines showing through the leather, classy, or what.

Now we move on the stand and keyboard functionality, or complete lack of it. It's simple really, they don't work at all. What Noreve have unbelievably done to keep the front cover stable is used some weak magnets across the back of the case so that the front cover (which has metal strip in it) will stick to it. Now, hands up who fancies holding their iPad up with a fridge magnet, me neither. Terrible doesn’t even come close.
Keyboard function, what keyboard function?, you may as well put a matchbox under it would be much more stable.

I’m just going off to take this out on my punch bag. Sorry no photo’s I just can’t bring myself to look at it again.

To conclude, I’m very sorry to disappoint those people that have pre-ordered. Hopefully mine was a bad example, but I needed to be completely honest about this product as I have seen it. My old Noreve cases for the iPod video and touch are still brilliant quality, this has taken me totally by surprise.

I'll keep you updated to what Noreve say to my email.

We'd like to see what you see. Pictures, pretty please?

Sorry to hear that. I suspected from the photos that the Noreve tradition case was flimsy. Seems like all the leather folio manufacturers are jumping into production without any testing first - all the preorders have become beta testers.

Colophon, if you don't mind, could you please post some pictures before returning it? Your post makes me want to cancel my order but it actually did ship already.

-Wow, Colophon -- what a shock! I'm really amazed that anything that poor could even get packed for shipment....
Very sorry about the disappointment -- and I will be quite interested to hear what the response to your e-mail is from Noreve.

well, here are the shots

Hia,

I've got rid of my frustration now and got a response from Noreve to see some pics before they go any further. Here are the ones I've taken. It is so difficult to appreciate how uneven the leather really is in person, these photos don't do it justice, white is not a good colour. Photos tend to even out the way it really looks because of the exposure. :(

I’ve spent 2 hours massaging the leather to get the creases out, some of them look better now so I guess I’ll keep it save messing about posting it back and getting another case in the mean time, better than being out of pocket.

These are the shots of just got off my camera real, funny, it look really nice  in these because the contrast has washed out the uneven leather. :)

Sorry to disappoint some of you. Like I say, maybe I have a dodgy one and all the others are fine. I think they had it in for me keep asking them about the delivery.

Good luck with your versions, hope this helps some of you.

Hi Colophon -

I'm unable to see your photos (do they have to be downloaded from dropbox?) -- but anyway right now what I'm mostly interested in is Noreve's response to you by e-mail, and also the stability /usability issues that you mentioned after you received your case. Do you still feel that it is not stable to use, in either upright position (for watching video) or as a typing stand? And did you get a suitably sympathetic response from Noreve, or did they sorta blow you off?

Without seeing your pictures, I can imagine that there may be something you can do to minimize the creases that you mentioned -- but if the case is unstable & doesn't function well, I want to know about it!

Thanks A LOT for helping the rest of us!!
