3GS added the compass

iPhone 4 added the gyroscope

I do consider this the largest upgrade since the original iphone. and it is very difficult for me to understand how people can think anything less...

But after I thought about it some I guess I can see some argument. This iPhone doesn't bring anything new per se it just upgrades everything.

iphone 3G
new 3G network! much better, faster, and simultaneous data and talk
new GPS! very clearly a huge brand new feature over the original iPhone
new 16GB

iphone 3GS
new ability to record videos!
new voice commands!
new 32GB

iphone 4
new front facing camera!
new... uh..

and the front facing camera isn't really something that the average person really sees a huge need for. especially because you need 2 iphone 4's to make it work.

don't get me wrong, I still think this is by FAR the best upgrade to the iphone. IMO, I picked the best upgrade times with getting the 3G first and now the 4. I wouldn't have done it any other way. But I can see how in some peoples mind this doesn't bring much new to the table. just upgraded screen, upgraded camera, upgraded RAM, upgraded design, upgraded battery.

But i'm still going to be in heaven come June 25th :) (I'm traveling so I'll be getting it a day late)

According to that definition of new, the iPhone NEVER had anything new since all of its features has been on other phones before it.

Nothing in the iPhone is new, per se. Cut Copy Paste, been done before. Multi tasking, others have it. What sets Apple apart from all the rest is the implementation and performance.

So if you want new, go buy a droid. If you want the best, buy an iPhone 4. Marginalizing will get you no where.

BTW, Mad Mac Maniac...none of that was directed at you. I just dislike when people try to marginalize things to make themselves feel better, as the OP did.

Flawed comparison, how is 16GB, 32GB not just an upgrade? and if you count them why not count the camera upgrades?

Your comparison is totally off.

3GS, hardware wise brought only a magnetometer.
4 brings the gyroscope and the front camera.

Don't forget the noise cancellation.

Also how can a design be upgraded? The NEW design adds form as well as function. So you can add that too.

Usually, and upgrade is an increase in functionality, so it's not new. Remember, there's no such thing as new and improved.

And its also true that you fanboys go looking for "trolling" where there often isnt any. Someone posts a concern here, they're attacked. Someone lists features they want their iPhone to have, they're attacked. Etc Etc. The only thing worse for a forum than trolls is rabid fanboys attempting to control the flow of conversations.

Years? 4G will be around next year and by all accounts it blows away the speeds we're seeing via 3G on ATT. And with those increased speeds you'll probably see Facetime open up to cellular support too. I'm thinking next years iPhone is going to be the one to own, and the one after that will be the equivalent of the lackluster 3GS release.

Facetime will be open to the ATT network for anyone that can look up a youtube article on how to jailbreak their iphone and add the 3G Unrestricter. Oh, and btw, trolls, especially trolls that have no reason to be in a forum for a product they don't like (you), are the worst thing to happen to forums.

true. I missed those. Although we will have to wait and see truly how useful the gyro is.

Well, I never said the iphone needed to have it first compared to other phones, I'm just saying it is something new to the iPhone that previous generations of iPhones didn't have and can't get with software upgrade.

I agree that was a bit of a stretch. And I actually had gone back and added those at the end, but that doesn't disregard the other additions. Regardless if you want to consider having a phone capable of holding more memory as a new model or just an upgraded model, I think it's safe to say that it was a larger factor in some people's eyes. And that is a factor that the iPhone 4 doesn't have.

But again, I'm just playing devil's advocate more than anything else. I think the iPhone 4 is a tremendous upgrade and I'm so excited to get mine!

Still flawed.

Brings better camera, LED flash, more ram, better processor, better screen, better materials etc..

Yes, guys, it is an upgrade and a damn good one.

OP i'm in the same boat as you and I keep going back and forth. As for now the fact that the 3GS will have an unlock AND iOS4 and the iphone4 wont is enough for me to keep my 3GS.

That could change though b/c i'd love a better battery.
