I feel your pain but here is my question. When you activate the the Gen 1 iPhone through iTunes, your simply agreeing to a new 2 year commitment and has nothing to do with the upgrade status since you bought the phone at a non-subsidized price. Why would that mess with your status ?

It seems to be a computer automated response, just happens. In the computer's system, apparently, the only eligibility criteria is length of time since your contract start date. Somehow, on my account, when my phone was stolen, the rep made it so that the computer stated that I was upgrade eligible. Then, when I activated a new phone, it automatically cancelled that out. The reps told me yesterday that noone can do that in the computer, so who knows?? But, they did make notes that I am upgrade eligible, so hopefully I am OK.

FarSeide - Thanks for the info.

If this is indeed the policy, then a) the tactic I suggested to start the thread won't work. b) it would make Steve Jobs' claim during the keynote false (or if not false, than wildly oversimplified and misleading). I hope it's not the case.

I think they really screwed up the communication on this one. For all the effort that's put into simplifying the user experience of the phone, they botch the ordering and pricing process. I realize that not all of this is within Apple's control, but I'd think they'd work better with their partners to present a clear plan to customers.

I understand the pricing policy. I think that it's more consistent with other phones and plans, but the problem was the expectations that were set in the keynote. I don't know what Apple knew about AT&T's plans prior to the announcement, but I feel completely mislead about the pricing model. Making broad pronouncements that later turn out false is a really crappy way to hype your product.

Before I decide whether it's still a fair price, I'd like to know more about what other smartphones cost. Could someone more familiar with the Blackberry say what a comparable model costs for a non-upgrade price and what the data plan costs are?

I have a feeling we will get a new announcement from AT&T sometime next week. They will clear this up and I have a feeling that they will let everyone upgrade regardless of the status. Perhaps its just my wishful thinking but...

saDeRmac,
What about those of us who bought the original iPhone release day, then got rid of it a few months ago but the line it was on remains unused and still shows as using an iPhone on it, even though I took off the data plan? This is on a family plan...will I be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G for the new pricing?
Any information you could get on this would be really appreciated! I attached a photo of my AT&T account showing how they think I am still using the iPhone, but obviously from the minutes it hasn't been used.
Steve
Ask your local AT&T store to see if your upgrade eligible... if you are then there will be no problem in upgrading... everything is still panning out... its gonna be a couple of weeks before we get more definite answers.

SaDeRmac : Great to see so many of your replies, really helps us save time on customer supp calls.

These questions should help many :

Is $30 data plan a must? What about those areas where there is no 3G available? What if I am going to use it in a non-3G area while still buying it in a 3G area?

I have been using iPhone (unlocked) on my regular Cingular account for quite some time now and I plan to do the same with the 3G iPhone (Would cancel the line after 3o days!). Using an iPhone on a non-iPhone account should not mess with upgrade eligibility right? I am using media net $20 plan too.

Could you please chart out the exact amount for getting a 3G iPhone after ETF?

Is it $199 (8GB) + $175 + Activation ($35?) + First month's bill ($70) + Possible pro rata second month? = $479 (Approx)??

Thanks a lot buddy! These questions will definitely help my readers and I want to feature you on my blog : http://iLikeMyiPhone.com

Pl don't get offended by my stance against ATT on my blog, just voicing my opinion!
Right now it is really speculation but its looking like the $30 is a must if you want to be able to use the Internet. The new Internet plan is not b/c the phone is 3G. It's because the original agreement btwn Apple and at&t is up and we are subzidizing the phone... PDA plans are $30 each regardless of speed or generaton.
Eligibility is one of the things that might change closer to launch. Keep coming back to this thread to find out more or PM me.

I'm also an at&t employee but not on the Mobility side but I do have several reliable contacts...

I also spoke to 5 different service representative with at&t and the answers are all consistent.

In order for you to upgrade to the new iPhone regardless if you already have one or not, you have to be upgrade eligible. This means that just because you have an iPhone doesn't automatically qualify you for the new 3G iPhone.

Some of you may be eligible for an upgrade because of the following scenario.

1. You purchased a new subsidized RZR on 7/1/2006 and when iPhone was released back in 6/2007, you purchased the iPhone at a full NON SUBSIDIZED Price. This means that because you will be eligible for an upgrade on 7/1/2008 since purchase of iPhone didn't burn up your upgrade eligibility.

Again, you can only purchase the new iPhone at the discounted rate if you are a NEW customer or Upgrade Eligible Customer.

The full retail price of the phone without getting the discount is undetermined.

I hope this helps and I know this may anger many of you...
I think its still to early to finalize the eligibility debate... its possible that at&t will change their minds... so keep watching the bigger news sites to get info..

Hey saDeRmac, did you find out about the deal?
My manager says that you should wait a little while especially because the IMEI was already registered. I would go into your local at&t store anyway considering you need to create your account. They will probably be able to tell you some information and note your account.

I couldn't have said it better.

Thank you guys for valuing my information and opinion. Although I am able to share information with you about the launch I will never post any document that has been labeled for internal use only. The higher ups are looking into the source of the last leak and I really value my job. So this means I am only allowed to give you the facts and try not to speculate... Thanks for asking questions and I will continue to try to answer them to the best of my knowledge.

and what should I tell the store on how to note my account?

I dunno... I mean that right now I don't have all the answers and my manager didn't right now... so what I would do is ask your at&t if they could help you out... If you want my opinion... I think that activating right now will be okay... I'm just not sure how everything will be taken care of once you decide to get iPhone 3G.

Ok... I have been reading all of these posts, I have also read just about every thread regarding the new iphone. I really want the new iphone, and I would love to see a positive thread about it... BUT... the upgrade eligibility thing really screws over original iphone users.

Ok, I bought my iphone on July 07, 2007. I left Sprint that day and started a new At&t account. I paid the early termination fee and signed a brand new 2-year contract. That means I am not technically eligible to upgrade until at least April of 2009. So, this means that everyone who bought the iphone in 07 will not be able to get the new iphone at the $199 price point until their accounts become upgrade eligible. Right? Doesn't that seem a little unfair. I bought the phone for 600 bucks, and paid a 200 dollar early termination fee. I believe I am entitled to the new one at the same price a new At&t customer (or eligible upgrader) receives.

If I understand correctly though, everyone who is an iphone 2G user is eligible for upgrade? If this is true, my online account does not reflect that, it says I am not eligible.

Ok... That is all I want to say. I want the new phone, and I already sold my old one. But I do not want to pay more for it than other people. It doesn't seem like Apple would allow this to happen to iPhone 2G users...

LeanneStewart
I bought my iPhone around the same same time as you (I was an existing Cingular/AT&T customer) and agreed to a new two year contract. My online account says I'm eligible for an upgrade. I'm surprised that yours says you're not. From what I've read if you bought an un-subsidized phone you're eligible for an upgrade.

So in the end, if one has to pay full price for the handset, wouldn't that infact be no different than what we had to go through with the first iPhone? Meaning we could do wahtever we wanted (won't have to actually activate it, etc)?

sadermac,

Since the phone is subsidized, and we will be paying the normal data rate, will company discount be available now?

That is what the memo claimed. What I want to know is if I can get the 3G plan but keep my 2G iPhone. With FAN my bill would be far cheaper than it is now.

You would think so, but no. Seems AT&T is getting a bit greedy by mandating a 2 year contract with a non-subsidized iPhone. As far as I know, they don't require a contract for any other full priced phone.

Hopefully they will fix this issue - I think this was an oversight rather than purposely screwing over their long term customers.

Why would you want to pay more for 3G if you're not using a 3G phone?

Right now I pay 129USD for the family plan (two iphones both with 1500SMS).
If I convert just my line to 3G and my FAN IRU discount was active I would pay 119USD. If I convert both lines to 3G my bill would be 134USD.

So for me the price increase become a discount/wash.

hello, does anyone know if ATT can change a number for an eligible line. I might be moving and i would need to change my area code and number. is there anyway ATT can upgrade and change the number? thanks!

This is actually the complete opposite of what I was just told by AT&T and the woman I spoke to read directly from the Apple memo. I think that maybe the ones who havent seen the memo are just assuming based on how they handle other phones. Based on how they handled the previous iphone release as not everyone that bought one was upgrade eligible and from what she read to me, I am tending to believe otherwise that everyone will be able to get one, regardless of your existing contract.

I have a feeling we will get a new announcement from AT&T sometime next week. They will clear this up and I have a feeling that they will let everyone upgrade regardless of the status. Perhaps its just my wishful thinking but...

No, no, no. So I can buy a subsidized AT&T Tilt on July 08, flip it on eBay, and then purchase a subsidized iPhone 3G on July 11?

No, no, no. AT&T is not going to let everybody buy a cut-rate 3G iPhone.

Thanks, so the upgrade eligible status applies. I found a way to determine when your line is eligible to upgrade using the website. Mine says that the line is eligible July 10, 2008. Score!

Now hopefully AT&T will stop being so cryptic and release information on how this in-store upgrade process is going to work, ASAP. There is too much information unknown to customers, and its causing a lot of confusion. I really hope there are still ways for a customer to activate at home. In store activation can take a while

sadermac,

Yes IRU discounts will be availible if your FAN has a rate plan discount. Talk to an at&t rep in a store to find out more.

Why would you want to pay more for 3G if you're not using a 3G phone?
The $30 plan is not b/c of 3G. I wish everyone would stop thinking that. ANY PDA phone that has EDGE or 3G has to have that same $30 plan (or $45 for enterprise). There is no getting around it for PDAs or the new iPhone if you want data.

diamond.g: Yes you can change your data plan to what you see fit. Just realize if you are going to put more than one iPhone on your family plan each iPhone needs to have its own data pkg. BTW if you are paying for 1500msg on two different phones, I recommend just getting the Family Unlimited msg for $30. Thats what you are paying already for both combined and that makes it so anyone on the family plan would be able to txt unlimited.

hello, does anyone know if ATT can change a number for an eligible line. I might be moving and i would need to change my area code and number. is there anyway ATT can upgrade and change the number? thanks!
Yes, just ask them to relocate you when you are upgrading and they will be more than happy to do it.

They are being cryptic to their own employees... we have the same amount of information as you do and we are customer facing... lol Anyway, ur eligibility status is hilarious...

Cheers to all!

Will the unlimited family text work on a 2G iPhone? I was under the impression that it wouldn't.

I whole heartdly recommend everyone that is going to get a 3G iPhone to look into availability of the service discount. Once you take that into account, in most cases your bill will be cheaper than it currently is (or will be).

Personally I have called customer service if it wasn't provisioned right and made it work... so yes it will work b/c I've seen it done.

What are your questions... I will try to answer them to the best of my knowledge and even update them if you want... I work for AT&T and I don't want anyone misunderstanding our intentions (even though personally i might not agree with them myself). Personally I'm hoping that they fix the "Upgrade Eligible" stipulation.

I never bought an iPhone (too expensive) and was quite happy when they announced a lower price, but my happiness disappeared when I found out the reason for the lower price was that AT&T would now be subsidizing the cost.

Booooooooooo.

Here's the thing... I actually have an AT&T account (Cingular before they became AT&T) and upgraded my phone a couple months ago now. I really want to get the iPhone now, but simply cannot afford more than $300... what am I looking at here? $500 for a new phone or do I have to wait until I'm eligible again for upgrade (Nov. 2009 according to my account page)?

I'm not sure what to say right now because I think that the upgrade eligibility thing is going to change as we get closer to the launch... I'm intensely hoping that everyone will be eligible for the iPhone 3G just like the 1st gen iPhone. I can't really speculate cause i work for the company and they said only state the facts... I'm sorry, I just can't give people a false hope...:apple:
