Yup, your own fault for not realizing what you were purchasing. Next time to do some thinking and research.

Samsung Galaxy Tab, Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom Wifi, Asus Transformer...there's quite a number of reasonably or cheaply priced Android tablets that sound like they might better suite the OP's needs.

Most of these tablets aren't cheaper. I won't judge if they are better as I think that the market has already spoken.

The OP does have a very valid point.
Why doesn't the iPad coMe with all the various social networking apps on it?
In today's market, these should all be considered basic, standard apps, just like a browser.

Of course, the browser that the iPad comes with is *****, so, maybe that's a bad example. 😀

It's a little silly to blame the iPad for developers' slowness in releasing these apps, especially when overall it far outstrips the competition on total apps available. Even if you discount the 50-60% of iPad apps that are total crap.

You know, it's quite alright to have criticisms on a $900 device.
Especially when there are phones out there that have that stuff built in.

Being critical is what makes changes.
Trying to make excuses is not a solution.

This is quite silly really. Aside from the fact that it's not a '$900 device' but a $500 one, what the OP is criticizing is his own lack of skill in determining the most appropriate way to spend his own money in order to meet his own needs. Given Apple's well publicized stance on Flash it wouldn't seem likely that any additional complaints about the absence of it on iOS devices would make any difference at all. To borrow the analogy offered by another poster here, it's a bit like expecting Porchse to bend to criticism and offer a 7-seat 4-wheel drive 911 because someone would like a sports cars that can go seriously off road with the entire family in the back.

And even if we assume it's perfectly OK for people to blame the manufacturer when they discover that stuff they bought doesn't do what they want, only what the manufacturers says, it isn't as if the OP here could have been ignorant of the iPad's limitations after owning and using an iPhone. It won't help Apple change their mind over Flash when the arguments for it are made in a way that lacks any real credibility.

Either you didn't research the needs of your dad and compared it to the capabilities of the device or you are just trying to be a troll .... come one, who is blindly buying a device assuming it would just do what you want. ... my guess is you are just trolling.
^^
what they said

Market doesn't speak for quality. It speaks for popularity. If Toyota sells millions of camrys, doesn't mean that it is better than the rest.

There isn't a native, optimized Facebook App for the iPad yet.

I'd certainly agree that this is something of a disappointment, especially considering the widespread popularity of the iPad, the fact that its been out for more than a year, and the extensive SDK support Apple gives to developers. Somehow I think there is some "politics" going on with Facebook's management. Then again, there may be some restrictions in the Apple approval process that don't jive with Facebook's (somewhat cavalier) approach to sharing user data. That said, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a native FB iPad App available in the next few months.

The absence of a native Facebook App for iPad has nothing to do with approval process, it's just Zuckerberg & Co being silly brats and arguing that iPad is not a mobile device.
If it was an issue about privacy, there wouldn't be an iPhone FB app either.

ok, thank you all for the impressions.
you're right. i should had some investigation on my dads needs instead of just thinking about the easy-of-use interface. last days i found also that there's a psychological aspect here, my dads are less motivated to use the tablet since they know that many contents (videos) are unavailable, so they will prefer the easy-to-use TV..

iOS needs a refresh. No doubt about it. All other mobile platforms have social media integration (WP7 Is the best in this area to me) and its about time for it to hit iOS. Also, instant photo sync to Mobile Me is a must in the next refresh. They just need to make the cloud push hard and heavy with iOS 5.

Unfortunately, I bet we see some type of proprietary integration that will not please others. I can hear the griping already.

I do agree though, that complaining about the lack of Flash on an iPad At this point is ridiculous. It was widely reported that iPad would have no Flash.
Yes, it's annoying, but everyone knows going in that t won't be an option.

I know why you think that, but actually I think people who feel this way are wrong.
I would imagine the vast majority of normal non computer people hardly even realise what Flash is. They bought a PC and flash was already installed, or they installed windows, visited a website one and it said they had to install it.
They sort of remember seeing a word like "Flash" some time ago, but never really knew what it was or why they needed it, they just clicked ok, and that was the last they remember.

They just turn their computer on and use it, they don't really know what makes things work. They are just happy being able to type some emails and print out some photo's.

They could buy and iPad from the TV adverts and not have a clue why it does not work when they visit their Flash website and when they press install flash on their iPad screen, as that's what it says in front of them, it does not work.

You can't "Ask the question" you see, if you don't know you have to ask a question in the 1st place.

As Apple say, Things should Just Work.

and that, is exactly why flash isn't on ios.

Oh dear, you still don't get it.

It's not the fault of the Internet that the iPad cannot play flash, it's the fault of the iPad that it doe snot have the power to play flash.

The issue is trying to be pushed into the wrong direction.

I know and understand WHY from a technical standpoint the iPad does not play Flash. Battery life and Machines power, though with iPad2 I think power may be less of an issue.

But that does not mean I'm going to swallow the line that it's not the iPad which is the problem area.

Luckily I do not have my mind clouded & distorted by years of Adobe hatred as some do 🙂

No.

Flash is a fatally flawed relic from an earlier era of computer history. Why would anyone want to pollute the safe, secure, and efficient iPad world with its toxic legacy?

Just last week, The Wall Street Journal had to rush to reconfigure their "Wikileaks"-type whistleblower site Safehouse, because it relied on Flash technology.
Mr. Eckersley said the problem was with a Flash feature called Flash Socket Class, which would allow SafeHouse to discover a user’s real IP address, regardless of any anonymizing technologies that might be in use.

The internet is by now 98.5% "Flash-Free." Why would any sane person want to ruin the performance of the iPad, just so they can watch grainy porn videos and (try to) play crappy games on the 1.5% of sites that are too lazy or stupid to upgrade to a video and animation format appropriate to the modern era?

Soooo... iPad 2 has or doesn't have the power to run flash?
Anyhow, how could the iPad be at fault when it's Adobe who has just not bothered to offer a decent solution to run Flash on iOS or for that matter, any mobile device?

If there is a new standard of format, which can offer everything Flash can, Video, Vector Animation etc etc, and it's a agreed upon new format that does all Flash can do using less power than Flash takes to display the same on-screen video/animation/effects, then sure, let's more forward to use the new thing.

But.......

Is there a new format that can do everything Flash can do, and use much less computing power, and has this new system been finished and agreed upon by everyone as the thing to move across to yet?

If the "new thing" does not yet exist, how can we junk the "old thing" ?

I look at is from a much further distance away.

You have data and you have a device that displays the data to the user.

If the data has been around and established for many years, and we the users have been using previous devices to view the data, then a new device comes out that cannot read part of this well established data, how is it suddenly the data's fault? The data existed long before the device was even thought of, and the people who make the device, knew the data was there.

But now, we don't blame the device, as it cannot read long existing data, it's the data's fault now apparently.

Most of your issues can be solved with appropriate apps and a little research.
An iPad is just a big shiny coaster until you put apps on it, if they gave you all the essential apps right out of the box there would be little incentive to buy more would there?

Lack of flash on iOS is hardly a big secret or even that big of a deal (for most).

Nice to see the whole thread descend into another flash debate tho...never seen that before 🙄

Given that changing video over is the very least of the flash issues and converting to other formats. I don't know why YouTube is STILL heavy with Flash.

It's soooo annoying when I click on an email link or a link on a web site I get directed to YouTube and then told I can't play the video, so I have to remember the name of the video, load up the iPad's YouTube all, then do a search and hopefully manage to find the same video.

Such a pain.

As I said, seeing how video is the very very least problematic to change into another format, why, over a year later has nothing changed?

Flawed or not, it should be up to me, the user, to decide if I want to use it, or not.
I have the option on my Android phone to turn Flash on or off.
I RN into Flash based websites all the time, and it is very annoying.

Lets not pretend that omitting flash was a good idea.

If Jobs is so concerned about the uses webbrowsing experience, then why doesn't he do something about the abomination that is Safari?

Anybody else have the bug where after being redirected to a YouTube video, all you see when returning to Safari, is a white screen. Followed by a Safari force close.

Yeah. That's stable.

Yep--and Friendly is a perfectly suitable stand in--in fact, it's probably more or less what an official Facebook app will look like anyway and probably less buggy.
