I'll take a resurrection of the Talking Moose if I'm going to have a random dumb thing talking to me on my computer screen. The fact that nobody has (as best I can tell) built a version or clone that runs on a modern Mac is a crying shame.

There is, it turns out, a Windows version by the original author, but it the absolute most nightmare-fuel version of the Moose I can imagine. How anyone could create that monstrosity is beyond me.

To me, the existence of the notch in general seems like a fantastic use of screen real-estate in a world in which the camera has to take up some space. I now have a screen the exact same size and ratio as my previous MacBook Pro, but I also have an additional stripe at the top for the menu bar that was previously just black glass to leave room for the camera.

Basically, I'm getting a free half-inch of vertical screen, and because the MacOS always has the menu bar up there, having a little chunk missing in the middle of it is basically no loss at all. The only mistake was not either making the menu bar black by default, or having a wallpaper with a black stripe at the top as the default.

If your complaint is about how big it is horizontally, it is about twice as wide as it needs to be, but only twice, since it's not just the camera in there--there's a light sensor to the left of the camera and the indicator LED to the right

It's not really worth discussing because Apple has decided, and when Apple decides something that's just how it's going to be. Rarely do they admit they were wrong (although they have been eating more crow lately than normal). But I would have rather had a lower quality camera with no notch. Like the Dell XPS 15 for example. For my personal needs, that quality is plenty. When I'm docked at my desk, I have a higher-quality cam on my monitor anyway.

Ya, check out my new MacBook Pro! I just love the real estate!

For anyone like myself who was initially confused, the first image has a row of Xmas tree lights, not nooses.
I thought the same thing and found it humorous but frankly I am surprised that politically correct Apple of all companies would allow this with the accompanying picture to stay on the App Store. When Tim gets wind of it, it’s coming down. Just saying….

I just spent all afternoon working on my MacBook Pro and my first thought when reading this article was “oh right, it has a notch”. You completely forget it’s there… I might download this fun little app just to remind me! Ahah

Oh and for everyone talking about a moose, there’s a goose (or duck? can’t remember) that walks around and steals your pointer, just google it.

I installed it. Its actually handy as it can show where your mouse is underneath the notch with the way the effects move. :)

But yeah, a month or so in, the notch is a non-issue... forget it's even there for the most part.

Yes.

I found myself talking to Mr. Clippy at my desk when no-one was around, about how much I disliked my boss, what my plans were for the weekend and listening to my complaints why the freakin’ printer always being offline … Even though Mr. Clippy never responded, I knew he understood me. ?
For people without friends, this Tamagotchi might be really useful social support.
I've always been thrown off my work flow by Mister Clippy; Microsoft has now integrated less smart attempts into its operating system reality: Again and again some well-intentioned hints interfere; I am glad that Apple does not implement something so stupid so aggressively and annoyingly.

Yep, I hate to think how half these people would react these days if anyone released a screensaver featuring flying toasters.
This is what we need! With toast that we can configure too. Like sourdough with PB&J. And we can play Doom on the toasters.

Now it makes sense. My missus was confused when she asked how to decorate her notch and I sent her to the beauty salon.

Oh yeah, forgot I've got a notch now I've had the MBP for a month and a half and everyone stopped talking about it! Maybe I should get it some baubles. ?

I genuinely just don't even think about it being there. Except admittedly I did set one game in "Get Info" to not use the extended screen space each side of it because that made some indicators move up behind the notch. But that was a super simple one-time fix that then it makes it 16:10 and hence probably more sense as a standard gaming res anyway.

I would love to have the notch on all 4 sides of the screen, will this app allow me to do just that?

This is amazing... goofy, but amazing none-the-less. Totally reminds me of the old After Dark stuff like the aforementioned Flying Toasters. I installed it. Kind of digging the top-of-the-list choice "Glow" effect.
