go to that link and scroll down a bit to that contoller. time for apple to get the lawyers in for blatent copying of apple syling and the ipod scrollwheel

Isn't the patent for the "iPod mini" type of controller i.e. where the cueing controls are integrated with the scroll wheel.

Apple can't patent or have an argument on this 'non-integrated' version, as the basic scroll wheel concept is on a Bang and Olufsen DECT phone that I purchased here in the UK back in 1997 or thereabouts.

As for the rest of it, who give a fsck?

This Sonos thing is going to be niche solution the way it's currently packaged: the controller is $399 on its own.

So it's $900 just to get one ZonePlayer and one Controller (probably a cool $1000 once you buy the charging cradle for the contoller). If you don't have speakers, add in another $250 for something vaguely worthwhile.

I'll give you the fact that its more upmarket in feel than something like Soundbridge from Roku, but at that price it should be.

You seriously think we'd be better without them?

You'd never have innovation from companies, as there would be no profit in it. And while I have a lot of respect for Linux et al, we need standards - too many cooks, and all that. Sometimes you actually need to have something universally forced upon you, for compatibility if nothing else.

So long as it's done in a responsible way - it all comes down to who's doing it ;)

I agree. Although I have nothing to support it. I think the new 60 gig iPod will have built in AE support and be able to stream music directly to the AExpress.

Actually, the better option is that there'll be a wholesale redesign for 4G iPods that might allow them to act as controllers for host-based iTunes.

My thinking is that we'll see an optional WiFi add-in that will plug-in, and the accompanying software will "rendezvous" with in-range AXP units, to give you a list of available 'hosts' that can be controlled. Of course, once a host is 'acquired' by an iPod remote, it disappears from from the available list until released. Whether that functionality could practically be integrated into a mini is questionable.

You'll then be able to change playlist, go next, back, etc. based on the iPod remote effectively browsing the host. All other interaction would be host directly to AXP and then to the speakers.

That way you preserve battery life, as the iPod remote will only be 'awake' during interaction.

I just dissagree with the way that companys suck ideas dry and can exist entirley on royalty's.

I am by no way saying that companies would have to be forced to give software (would be nice though) away but it should be abandonware sooner I would also love more pc company's to have nice looking laptops apple dose not own style thy create it and others should be able to imitate so apple would be forced to compete on price and quality of build to drive the market further instead of dominating it like the ipod and itunes have, the dell dj and other clones drive apple to make a better product openness creates a more competitive market.

don't want to have a long argument I havent reserched my opinion or backed it up and frankly i cant be bothered i have better things to do I just dispise monopoly's that suck market's dry with there copyrights that prevent a competitive market

I've noticed no one has mentioned SJ's comments on the iWalk-Newton-PDA (call it what you wish). Seems like he's finally put the last nail in the Newton's coffin.

Jobs stated that he is proud not only of the products Apple has shipped, but also the products Apple has decided not to ship. When asked to elaborate, Jobs replied, "an Apple PDA."

Jobs confirmed that Apple had designed its own PDA device, but canned the project just prior to bringing it to market.

During a Q&A session, one individual pleaded with Jobs (as he clenched his Treo), begging for Apple to produce a PDA/Phone hybrid. Jobs told the audience member it would be best to remain happy with his Treo.

I expected more comments on this. There always seems like a lot of people want an Apple PDA and now we have a definitive statement from the top. What's the deal. No one care anymore?

Apple could never compete with the current PDA offerings.

I mean, you can already get wifi/bluetooth/300+mhz pocket pc for $250!

I also am surprised that there are not more PDA comments. I would love to have one. I agree that the market is saturated with PDA but how many of them have an internal hard drive. I think a flash MP3 player compared to the iPod is similar to the current PDA's compared to what Apple's PDA could be like. The most pricey PDA's would probably cost just about the same as what Apple could charge for a 20 GB PDA. Who wouldn't buy the Apple version when it had so much more possibilities?

I guess when Steve said that Apple had some great things coming out this year to celebrate the Mac's 20th anniversary he was right. All I can say about stuff like today is WOW! Especially when you stop and think what all this cool stuff can do.

As for an Apple PDA, I could care less about it. I used to carry a PDA around, but it was just clunky and it filled up my pocket. I know Apple could make one better, but with contacts and appointments on the iPod, a PDA doesn't make since, TO ME.

Well really an iPod can be turned into a PDA if they do it right. I wouldn't get your hopes up right away. But maybe someday. 5G, 6G?

i think that is a bit too obvious for apple, seeing what they came out with yesterday it may develop into something revolutionary that we never new we needed but we somehow will!

All good things comes to those that wait patiently. If it all happened in one day, then we wouldn't have time to savor each one!

I keep checking the iTunes website, and it still says the newest version is 4.5, along with my Help>Check for iTunes Updates menu?!?!?!
What's going on? I want to be able to use 4.6!

It will be coming later this week, no need to get your panties in a knot - patience is a virtue, my friend. ;)

So why later this week? What happened to it? Is it going to be releaed next Tuesday or something?

don't understand

why all you guys are so desperate for iTunes 4.6?? The main difference will be airTunes, and you can't use that unless you have an airport express, and those aren't shipping until mid-july.

so I don't get the excitement, or do you always want (not need) the latest version knowing it's not better than 4.5 for the things you can use?

well, loser that i am, i'm hopenig for some other added benefits...i don't think AExpress will be the only change...i'm hoping for a party shuffle update...to allow you to better customize it...and seeing how the AExpress control is a drop down menu, mayber there will be a way to control other things as well....who knows  ....
