I think an obvious one is the rear glass panel will become touch enabled. I dont know for what purpose, i'll leave that to the masterminds of Apple. Or, like someone else suggested, they put solar panels under it. I remember a patent application from '07 i think which had a solar panel under the touch screen to aid battery life.

By the way, i think WWDC 2011 will be on regular time of the year, January 201, if so i don't think we will see another iPhone there. It can be all about macs at last. Do you think there's a chance they will skip 2011 and make another iphone at june 2012?

Huh? WWDC is always late spring/early summer. It's never been held in Jan. That is when MW is held.. except this year.

oops, sorry about that. I meant Mac World. Mac World 2011 can be all about macs at last or we may see iPad 2. Because it will be 8-9 months old, time for a recycle maybe.

I think the specs will increase thats a given but now the hardware is up to scratch I think Apple will be spending most of there time improving the OS. Bit like a 3G to 3GS kind of phone i.e faster with there main focus being on the software

Better integrated graphic?

AMOLED screen?

More storage?

Thinner and lighter?

I could keep going, really.

Removable storage, removable battery, customizable email and SMS tones.

One can dream, right?

I tell you what would be cool, is if they implemented what's in some watches where the movement of your hand charges the watch. Something like that to help suplement the battery in the phone. At least if you were stuck somewhere and had to make a call, you could shake it and charge it up a bit, enough to make the call. I think that would be a little better than solar power seeing as most peoples phones stay in their pockets. It would also work weather it was day or night.

Just to let you realize, we are in a fast changing technology era. They already have an idea of what the iPhone 5 would be about. They took 18 months to develop iPhone 4, which means they were working on it since iPhone 3G was out.

However, if technology won't allow improvements yet will be a silent upgrade.

What I hope is nanotechnology, but next year could still too soon for some features like the Nokia Morph prototype.

Better integrated graphic?

AMOLED screen?.
Given apple's LCD update to the iPhone and Job's remarks about OLED screens, I doubt they'll be embracing AMOLED anytime soon. Given the A4 chipset, they have a very good GPU in the iPhone, probably one of the best for a phone

Hmm, some random musings:

Hardware:
As component prices fall, as they inevitably do in the computer world, there's always room for better specs.
- Increased working memory. 512MB? 1GB?
- Increased storage capacity. 64GB, 128GB, etc.
- Faster CPU.
- Faster GPU.
- More energy efficient components.
- Greater battery capacity.
- Lighter weight.
- More durable materials.
- Greater precision/resolution accelerometers/gyros.
- Camera... well, the thickness of the phone presents a physical limitation to what can be done with a camera. Packing more photoreceptors onto the same sized sensor doesn't necessarily equate to a better quality picture. But I'm sure people are working on that. However, I'd imagine there's plenty of room for improvement regarding the lenses, special coatings, etc. I wonder if they could fit optical image stabilization in there?
- 100% water proofing? That'd be cool IMO.
- Screen... It's already reached the resolution limit of human vision, so we're left with color gamut, contrast ratio, longevity, power consumption, viewing angle, brightness, etc. There's also e-paper and its usability of ambient light. We could see incremental improvement of specs, or even a revolutionary combination of LCD/LED and e-paper qualities in a single screen. (Personally, I hope Apple doesn't try increasing the size of the iPhone screen - that would require the device itself to be physically larger.)
- Given the physical limitations, I wonder what room for improvement there is with the speakers?

Software:
I'd like to see iOS gain more "general computing" features, like:
- A filesystem. (Including connecting to desktops and servers with shared drives.)
- Printing. (To avoid having to load printer drivers onto the iPhone, what about print to a shared printer on a desktop computer via Bonjour, which handles actually driving the printer.)
- Multi-user support. (Maybe. I'm not sure how often more than one person will want to use a single iPhone or iPad.)
But if Apple has determined that this would hurt their Mac sales more than it helps their iOS device sales, I could see it never coming to pass.
- Increased freedom to interoperate with other devices via wifi and bluetooth. (Including connection sharing.)

I think I must agree with the OP here. As far as what is included in this version of the hardware, you can't add much new tech, at least at this time. I mean, they even threw in a gyroscope for motion sensing which is just crazy. :p

Of course there will be continued spec bumps each year and software will continue to add more options as time goes on. I don't know if we will ever see a 64GB iphone though as I think Jobs thinks the cloud tech they are working on now will make the increased storage on the phone obsolete, but that is a different story.

I don't know about other hardware stuff to add though at this time. HDMI and/or USB ports maybe...There is a new bluetooth standard that is supposed to come out this summer as well, so that would be a good hardware upgrade as it is supposed to be a ton better than current bluetooth.

All in all, this phone is amazing.

All I really need is a small blinking status light under the glass bezel that'll show me that I have email or incoming calls from across the room with the ringer in silent mode...

As for other stuff:

I live in Japan and and phones here do some nifty things that Apple may incorporate in the future... I mean we've had crappy 3G video calling for at least 6 years now!!! The biggest request here would be the inclusion of a RFID chip. Lots of people use their phones as train passes or even money. You see systems like ICOCA everywhere these days!!! Vending machines, stores and restaurants. Oh... Better or native QR code reader would be nice too.

Cortex A9 parts will be ready for prime time in smart phones next year. It would make sense that Apple is working on an A4 like version of this architecture to update the ipad/iphone/itouch. The question is whether or not it hits next year or the following year (which would put them behind the curve).

They are already updated Scorpion/Snapdragon parts coming that will be 1.2 GHz, 1.5 GHz and so on.

I was surprised that they updated the CPU two years in a row, but the jump from A4 to a Cortex A9 core should be like the jump from the 2G/3G to the 3GS.

GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol.

Really, so we have reached the pinnacle of technology!

How about wireless syncing, wireless charging, wireless TV connection, Wireless eye piece connectivity, 3D display, neural interface:D:D:D

I agree that there are a lot that apple can do. A bigger screen! Cloud storage and syncing. 3/4 g video chat. Perhaps video streaming that requires less memory.

Yes, right now but we are talking about future iterations.
