An android phone with a few lights on the back. Why is this regarded as revolutionary / amazing or interesting in any way?

Mostly because of its founder. And the fact that the smartphone space has become so stagnant that any change at all is notable.

Interesting. I guess they could back up the device using finder without having an account. I have a second iPhone that I use for more minimalist things (no it's not my grindr drop phone), but I still sign in with a dummy account for the sole purpose of backing up the device.

I think the overlap of people using an iPhone without an iCloud account but also who have a Mac to back up their phone, is a very very small group.

It is an interesting thought experiment though. As much as I dislike absolutely everything requiring some cloud account, I don't see how anyone could use a phone not signed into iCloud for anything that matters.

This would be a good case for sideloading. You can't even activate an Android phone without a Google account, but you could install all apps from a third party store. While you can technically use an iPhone without an Apple ID you can't use any third party apps at all without jailbreaking.

A highly-hyped option in a sea of mid-range Android phones. With the field of mid-range Android phones so crowded, it's not surprising that hype was their path out of obscurity and to get eyes on their product.

I have this phone as my backup/work phone, next to my iPhone 13 Pro Max.
For it's relatively low price ($450 USD), it's pretty good for a couple of things:

1) Screen. It has an extremely good quality OLED screen. 120hz, edge to edge, no bezel/symetrical design, much like the iPhone. Also 6.55 inch too.
2) Cool back design - never seen before. Gimmick, sure, but enough to turn heads. I was asked many times by random people to show how it works.
3) Decent camera quality (Main camera. Not flagship level, but decent enough)
4) Near stock android.

It's alright. Good first attempt to make a buzz in this overly saturated smart phone world.

Let’s be honest. It’s basically the most interesting Android phone out there, probably the only that’s actually worth being named an iPhone competitor. (Not sales-wise, but experience-wise).

Seeing people's negative reaction to a small brand trying to create something interesting is rather depressing.
Especially considering where their 'Team Apple' came from. A garage.
