Did I really just see someone call the Apple Watch effeminate?

Good lord.

Look at all the ads. Apple has a target demographic in mind and it centers around woman and effeminate men. Truth can sometimes sting.

Looked up Martian Notifier, and it's extremely ugly.

I'll take it over a toy looking Apple watch any day. The Apple Watch is about as ugly a statement as one can make in the watch arena. Doubt many Tissot, Omega, Tag, Rolex owners would prefer an Apple Watch over what they have? i.e. You think we're gonna see a movie with James Bond sporting an Apple Watch. LOL

I'll completely disregard this post and avoid wasting anymore time on this inane opinion. It's obvious you have no interest in Apple Watch and you're just here argue with others.

No world leader, but I am a mum who rarely has more than one hand free at a time, notifications on my wrist will be so handy.

To me, a big failing of most of the current smartwatches... Apple and Android included... is that some / most of their functionality is lost with only one hand free.

Most of them requires a second hand to look at and/or dismiss / respond to a notification via touch. Although your nose should work in an emergency :)

Apple Watch goes even further and requires a second hand to click / double-click / long-press one of the two buttons on the side to do common things such as calling up Siri.

Strange - I've never missed an alert be it in a bar or at a football game, my iPhone beeps and vibrates when one comes in!

Oh, you're right. The Apple Watch isn't in the next James Bond movie. Better re-think my purchase

i wish or you just say your battery died :D

That only works so many times:D

Now am sure that is you joking, but you have the option NOT to be reached when out. Leave the bloody thing at home. But we all know you won't ;)

I'm serious, I lived most of my life without a mobile phone, it was better;)

Of course now it's expected, I do leave it home sometimes, but we live in a world where you are expected to be available 24/7. And yes it has its advantages too, just long for the day I go fishing and not hear, Don't forget your phone:D

Pebble - $79-$99
Martian - $99-$129

Cheapest Apple Watch mens size = $400

Is basic math difficult?

No, but an intellectually honest discussion is, obviously. First, the Apple Watch starts at $349, don't move the goalposts by arbitrarily declaring the smaller one "women's size". Read the forum discussions here, plenty of men will get the 38 mm version – which has still a bigger display than the Pebble, by the way.

Second of all, it makes much more sense to compare Apple Watch not to the very outdated original Pebble, but to the upcoming Pebble Time, which has at least a slightly more comparable feature set and will have a reular price starting at $199. And is still very, very ugly.

As for actionable ntifications, we shall see how well the Apple Watch can handle that, but chances are, since the phone has to be on your person anyway, it won't be a feature used as often as you think.

And I bet you this will be one of the most convenient and most used, time saving features. Let's wait and see until folks had the chance to use the thing for a few weeks.

It is. Mainly because it's so half-assed; it's trying to look like a "normal" watch with the (not very) smart part just squeezed in.

I'm confused, why don't you either not answer or just not take your phone with you? If you don't want to be reached, don't be.

I do that all the time, it doesn't always work.

The best one for me is, sorry I'm in area with no service, that works many times, and honestly I do have that problem;)

Don't forget I too have become a slave to the technology age:D
Otherwise I wouldn't be posting here, or buying an Apple watch, you just can't go back, but I remember a time, and it wasn't so bad.

The only thing "effeminate" about the Apple Watch is that there are indeed models that a woman could/would conceivably wear. As opposed to all other smartwatches on the market, which are just way to ugly and only suitable for nerds.

The only thing "effeminate" about the Apple Watch is the fact that Apple had this demographic specifically in mind when making the watch. Ergo, it looks very feminine and is advertised for the effeminate person (both male and female). Link: http://bgr.com/2015/03/19/apple-watch-sales-women-marketing/

The other watches on the market? Some are much, much better looking than the Apple Watch and some are uglier. If Apple had designed the Moto 360, everyone (including you) would be praising it as the pinnacle of watch styling and innovation. But since Apple could only make a square lump, every other watch must only be suitable for 'nerds'. LOL And since a watch like the LG mimmics the style of a Tag, Tissot, Rolex... anyone that has ever owned a classic watch must have been 'nerds' too. Love your reasoning. Just admit you want a woman's piece of jewelry. Nothing to be ashamed of.

This guy is hysterical! :D

Agree that the Pebble is an ugly watch. I wouldn't buy one of those either. But, the OP was talking about notifications. I gave examples of watches that are on the market 'right now' that can do that and guess what? The original Pebble is between $79 and $99 AND it gives notifications. Just because it is ugly to some people, was not part of the discussion. Nor was the size? Nor the fact that it is old. Only the price comparison was mentioned by me.

You want an honest discussion, then discuss what has been said, not what you wish had been said.

Much like people enamored with paying for things with their iPhone, many of us have had the tech coming in the Apple Watch for over a year. We already know what is convenient and what isn't. But, we shall see if the Apple Watch can magically do things differently, however unlikely that may be.

It is. Mainly because it's so half-assed; it's trying to look like a "normal" watch with the (not very) smart part just squeezed in.
Hmmm, half assed, huh? Okay. Sure. I've been enjoying my 'half-assed' smartwatch with both my Nexus 5 and iPhone 6 for quite a while now. How long have you been enjoying that Apple Watch? :D

If I could I would go back to when nobody could reach me when I was out:D

It's easy, don't buy one of these automatic nagging bracelets...:)

I have complete control over the minimum notifications that I do authorize on my iPhone. Instead I'm proactive on my own schedule and it works out very nice.

Just another reason I have zero interest in Apple's smartwatch.

Will this be a passing fad?

This guy is hysterical! :D

Thank you. Thank you very much. I know the guys on this forum don't like hearing that they are buying a watch designed for women. ;)

I'll keep my opinions about the subject to myself from here on out. My last post on this subject of Apple's watch being effeminate. Promise.

The Apple watch does look the best. One opinion from a guy that thinks the Apple watch is a pointless battery hog/secretary to your phone.

Also one that turns the internet off on phone unless needed.

Your family and friends get to know how you work with tech and adjust their patience accordingly. If its important call.

This. I think that's what concerns me the most. We've become addicted to checking for notifications. This will only enhance that as now we'll "feel" every one--it won't just be because we looked. Definitely have to find a balance.
I feel that our addiction to checking for notifications formed because we've all missed an important or time-sensitive notification at one time or another, either because we didn't hear the phone or feel the vibration.

You won't miss a tap on the wrist from the watch. So whether we're taking a break from our desks while awaiting an email response from a coworker or in a loud venue where your other friends will text when they arrive - you know you'll get the notification. And that assurance means we can freely forget about our phones and stow them away instead of rechecking every 3 minutes to see if we missed that expected notification.

Someone: Hey did you get the new Apple Watch?

Me: No This is a martian notifier baby!

Someone: Say what now?!

Back on topic from its derailment, Ive been thinking about the notifications aspect a lot. Its massively useful to me, however Ive been so busy lately Im finding myself putting my phone on silent in the evenings and completely ignoring it. Im finding its getting a bit too much.

Work wise it will be awesome and thats the reason I need it the most, but come the evening I think it will be set to DND if it has that feature.

The initial notification is what is most important to me, and it will be much less stressful than wrestling with my pocket (which admittedly I don't use to carry my phone due to the type of clothes I wear) or the dreaded lost phone in the handbag. Once a notification is recieved I can then decide if I need to do anything more with it before getting myself in a sweat sourcing my phone. With a toddler in tow...this is priceless!

I tried the MS band for awhile, and while the band itself was brutally uncomfortable, one of the best parts about it was getting notifications on the wrist. People see it as intrusive, but I found it quite the opposite. If someone threw me a text or email, I could quickly see who it was from. It also stopped the phantom vibration problem where I used to think my phone would be vibrating and it wasn't.

You can lift your wrist up and say "Hey Siri" in a Dick Tracy style.

The notifications do look very nice. Being able to view whats happening in the middle of class on my AW without running the risk of pulling my phone out of my pocket and possibly getting in trouble for using my phone in class. Brilliant.

I see schools / teachers banning smartwatches in class soon. You'll get away with it for about a week until teachers see everyone staring at their wrists and sending drawings to friends and ban it all. Rules change with the times. When I was in school, one kid had a "mobile" phone that his dad gave him. It had a shoulder strap to carry it. There were no rules against cell phones back then because nobody had one.
