I for one use an iPhone BECAUSE of its smaller form factor, so I hope Apple doesn't go along with this trend. I don't need a phone the size of my head. I've done the 4.6-4.7" phone thing with a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 4, and both are just too damn big for a phone. If I want a screen that large for a video or whatever, that's when I get out a tablet.

I love huge screens and the only/main reason i did not stick with the Note II was because of the screen, especially in daylight.

The solution is so simple though for people who don't like large phones because its hard to reach stuff on it....Mover EVERYTHING to the bottom of the screen..

Safari - Move the address bar to the bottom of the screen.

Messages - Move navigation buttons to the bottom...

Ect..ect.. move everything control wise, or anything you need to tap on the top to the bottom. This would make tons of people happy..Its so simple that i can't believe it hasn't been done yet...Windows phone does most of this don't they?

I think Apple is finally realizing some people do actually want the larger screen. I wouldn't be surprised if future iphones came in 4" and 5" form factors but Apple needs to nail down iOS correctly so as to not create too much fragmentation.

My initial hunch was that these 2 changes were added in iOS to possibly accommodate larger future iphone screens and I guess I wasn't that far off.

Congratulations. Your family must be very proud of you.

How can affirm say this? "I think Apple is finally realizing some people do actually want the larger screen."

Where's your evidence? And please don't tell me because of "swipe from the screen's edge to go back"

Agree that offering 2 sizes is best. Thing is people will always complain. For instance, I just got the iphone 5 and I like screen more than the old size but I wish it was a little wider. However, I dont want it as large as an S4 but Im guessing Apple wont offer that specific size. Probably would offer something similar to today's size and a 2nd model about an inch larger.

you guys must have some small hands, I can easily reach any part of the screen naturally. My hands aren't excessively large, they're normal for a male or maybe slightly bigger

Everyone is different, and everyone's preferences are different.

You can search for the following poll results online.

Business Insider Poll (2013): 65% want a bigger iPhone screen
CNET Poll (2011): 61% want a bigger iPhone screen.
iMore Poll (2013) 66% want a bigger iPhone screen.
Mac Rumors Poll (2011): 62% want a bigger iPhone screen.

Apple is in reactive mode:

- Introduced the iPad mini to compete with the smaller tablets like the Kindle Fire, Nook and the Nexus 7 (and probably took a hit on profit margin with it).

- is going to introduce a cheaper plastic body iphone in the fall to compete with all the cheaper android handsets that are flooding India, China and other markets (especially ones that do not have subsidized price models)

- The larger screen iphone to win back some customers.

of course I could be completely wrong but I'm going to predict the iPhone 6 is going to have a bigger screen be it edge to edge 5" or just a larger formfactor.

No larger screen required: The iPhone 5 is already too tall for many to comfortably hit the back button in the top-left corner without repositioning their hands.

Because you have tiny girl hands no one should have a larger screened iPhone option? Ummmm OK.

I know you qualified your statement later but the fact you put the "excuse" why it's not needed totally shows your true feeling.

Again, because you don't like it there should be no option?

I will welcome the day my iPhone's screen is as big as an s4's.

In general every time I run into a non techy person who has an S4 I always ask them "hey how come you got that instead of the iPhone 5?". I often hear "I like the bigger screen".

Ask people around you. Even someone like myself who loves the iPhone 5 still would like a larger screen.

Apple is already going to introduce a cheaper plastic iPhone in the fall to compete in India, China and other parts of the world which are being flooded with cheaper Android handsets.

The next logical move is to go bigger screen to compete with the S4 and satisfy customer's wants.

Ok, so that's the next "logical" move for you, all those polls, what makes you think Apple is taking them into consideration? Plus two of those polls are before iPhone 5 so.. Apple simply decided to go 71:40 to almost match TV's, not because of polls.

Do you work for Apple?

That cheap phone is nothing but a rumor, and also, it has nothing to do with the screen size, more than expanding the lineup, if that's true.

Doesn't mean people are willing to pay more for this larger product.
If Apple can't make a higher margin on the product why would they bother making it?

Apple are going to release a cheaper iPhone because the 4 and 4s have lower margin than the 5 but are highly popular. They want to build a cheaper iPodPhone they can sell are a higher margin than the holdover iPhone 4 models. The plastic shell also gives better product difference between the two, making it easier to up sell to higher margin.

The holy grail would be if they can get better margin with a lower price point and better differentiation than their current low price options.

"what makes you think Apple is taking them into consideration?"

- Why else would Apple switch to a 4" iPhone screen after 4 years? They knew they were losing customers because 3.5" was too small.

"That cheap phone is nothing but a rumor"

I would agree with you here but I was shocked that the leaked iPhone 5 photos of last year were dead on accurate. More and more of these plastic colorful shells are showing up in blogs.

I don't think Apple can sell us on the "we know what customers want before they do" philisophy anymore. Consumer's voices are being heard these days. Look how the outrage over the Xbox One made MS do a 180 about being always online.

Oh buddy, you are just digging your own grave here man, you are not seriously comparing Microsoft against Apple.

And thanks for the words, "Apple still knows what customers want before they do."

I tell you what. When the 5" iPhone comes out next year lets revisit this thread. I'm thinking it's going to be edge to edge 5".

I think Apple takes larger screen into consideration not because of some polls, but because they most likely examine their Android competitors somewhere inside the company. And after most people actually use larger screen phones in real situations, they quickly realize that they aren't as bad as you imagine, large screen doesn't actually cause much problems and they make reading and web browsing a lot more comfortable.

I too was hating big screens some time ago, I thought they were clumsy and useless for a pocket mobile device. Then I played a bit with my friend's Android phone and it turned out not so bad at all. Most of the problems that you think big screens have are only in your imagination and it's a useful feature without any significant disadvantages.

I was shouted at for re-designing the Game Center icon with a dart board image, because apparently bubbles represent the app's purpose better...
Sometimes these forums are nice, but other times they can unnecessarily turn into a battleground.

Off-topic, a Swype-style keyboard in iOS would be great addition provided it could be turned off in the settings.

People also didn't like your icons.

If you're going to post a creative design then you need to have a thick skin because people won't always like what you did, and they're not shy about saying so, even when they can't do better.

FWIW Circles do represent it better than pretending its a dart game.

But you're right, sometimes people can be harsh on here; I try to catch myself and I try to edit out bits where I feel I'm just being bitchy about something that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
