Because you have tiny girl hands no one should have a larger screened iPhone option? Ummmm OK.

I know you qualified your statement later but the fact you put the "excuse" why it's not needed totally shows your true feeling.
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I would love a larger iPhone; I never said it wasn't needed or shouldn't be an option. My point was that Apple doesn't even need a larger phone to justify the introduction of swipe controls to make reaching things easier, i.e. the iPhone 5 is large enough right now that certain areas of the screen (e.g. the back button) can be awkward to reach in certain situations.

Not sure what the argumentative tone is about or why you felt the need to throw around insults.

The screen shouldn't increase in length anymore without an increase in width, otherwise well have a truly goofy looking phone.

Goofy?! I would love it!

Those record iPhone sales posted today show clearly that there are lots of people who chose the smaller screen instead of those Android cutting boards. In Apple's perspective, a wider screen will:

  • Fragment the apps and confuse devs
  • Make the phone less usable with one hand, something they insist on since day 1( and many agree)
  • Make the manifacturing process more costly and complex with no guarantee for better sales. Yes, many want a bigger screen but also many long time users will be put off by it. Besides, most of the users wanting large screens already migrated to Android.
Apple instead will focus on innovative and useful features, like a screen integrated fingerprint reader and IGZO display which could enable some amazing battery life.

And for those wanting an iOS device with big screen- say hello to the iPad. Or go buy something like the Galaxy Mega and let us laugh.

They need to stick with 4in then and neither increase the length or width. A 4.3in screen with the same width would look rediculous. I actually like my 4s size, but dont mind the 4in form factor of the 5 so the 5s will a good upgrade for me.

This may be a dumb question but what is the "back button" everyone is talking about? I only have the iPhone 4 so maybe it's just something that was added recently but I'm just curious - I have the one at the top that turns off the screen but is there another way to go back?

When you are deep into Settings for example, how do you get a step or two back? Well, that's the back button in many iOS apps.

I'm fairly certain he meant he likes how it is CURRENTLY. I doubt they were asking for an even taller model.

Remember when smaller was better?

It still is. Just some people are confused and temporarily sidetracked.

the back button..sometimes as a back arrow or the word back. In ios7 you have the option to swipe to go back.

Or maybe it is because there was a smaller jump from the 4/4S to the 5 from a speed/feature standpoint and you can get those phones for less than $1/$100 respectively.

Not that the iPhone 5 isn't faster, but not much compared to a 4S and is just taller.

Who wanted a 3G after the design of the 4 came out? Not so with the introduction of the 5...same basic design on the 4S at 1/3 the cost. I bought 2 after the 5 came out for my kids because they were so cheap.

Not really the case according to the statistics, check this out:

Percent of iPhone 5 buyers who upgraded from a previous iPhone 83 %
Percent of iPhone 4s buyers who upgraded from a previous iPhone 72 %
Percent of iPhone 4 buyers who upgraded from a previous iPhone 77 %

Right...so if I had a 4 on a two year contract and COULD get the 5, I might just upgrade to a 4S for $99 instead of $300 for the five and still be included in your statistics. The same could be said for someone who had a 3G for an extra year and then decided to upgrade to either a 4 OR 4S.

Also, there is no date range for the 4 and 4S data...reading it, I would assume that was the percentage that upgraded to those models when the initially came out. In that case, my point could still be valid...people are buying new 4's and 4S's AFTER the 5 was introduced due to the likeness and low price.

No larger screen required: The iPhone 5 is already too tall for many to comfortably hit the back button in the top-left corner without repositioning their hands.

This.

The iPhone 4S is the perfect size in my opinion. Small, thin, unobtrusive (although so unobtrusive I accidentally swam with it since I didn't notice it in the pocket of my board shots 0_0).

Ha, I really need to reword that comment. As I've clarified before, I have no issue with a larger phone, just that the 5 is already a reach, so any gestures that can help that are appreciated - even without the rumor/possibility of a larger phone.

No, nobody wants a wider iPhone, if it were to become wider we would go back the the 3:2 aspect ratio, you probably mean a bigger iPhone with the 71:40 aspect ratio.

I have never gotten this thinking. It sounds like someone working for Apple :apple: ;)

Anyhow i am not sure what you mean by not having a wider phone but i was thinking of a 4.3 or 4.5 display. Not quite as big as a five inch display. Yet makes everyone who wants a slightly wider display with more room happy. Without making the ppl who wants the display to stay as is to upset either. I call it the sweet spot. Just don't assume that everyone is happy with the display size as it is. I say let the ppl decide by giving them the choice of which size display they would like. You would be surprised how many would buy the bigger size. (Many probably would be android users who would flock to apple at that point IMO) :D

I agree with the OP plus i think Apple are trying to get there users used to gestures and they will implement more over time.

Hallelujah, someone actually agrees with me instead of fighting with me on the inevitable. :)

I agree too. Let me remind people of the many things that Macrumors faithful said were impossible, beneath Apple, etc that ended up happening:

-losing an iPhone prototype in a bar
-seams on the bezel of the iPhone 4
-smaller iPad
-non-retina iPad mini
-larger iPhone
-metal strip on back of an iPhone rather than all-glass

Apple is not some infalliable company that gets everything 100% on the first try. They are also not immune to bad decisions or bad design. They DO make mistakes and improvements, and they DO consider market data when deciding on their products. Like every other company, ever.

One day they probably will increase the size of their iPhone...they've done it once already
