For the i9 yes, I'm rocking with the i7 and I'm very pleased with what's thermal control once I spin up the fans a bit faster

I am thinking of getting an i7. When you say working fine - how heavy a load are you putting on it. I use PS and LR a lot. After that my usage is pretty light - web, mail.

Right now I'm a bit hamstrung in using my MBP because I'm waiting for the USB-C hub to arrive from amazon. Hopefully today. I'm seeing if I can AirDrop a set of vacation photos and the lightroom project to the MBP. The photos are 8GB and so I'm sending it over that way right now.

Overall temps are in the mid 50s without using Macs Fan Control and I'm ok with that.

Not sure how you can call something a “perfect” edition in 2018 when it can’t even drive a 5K display

I'm surprised your two main options are to buy the completely maxed out system, or if you get anything else, it'll only last 1-2 years.

I'm sure most people are expecting their i7 MBPs to last them many years, and they will.

Wasted so much time on waiting and waiting for over 2.5 years but nothing good comes out from Apple. The MBP2018 has thermal issues and it is not 100% certain that Rev 3 keyboard has no issue after few months of use. What suggestion do you have if I need to buy a laptop this month?

I’m thinking of switching to a System76 Oryx. It’s Linux OS and powerful, and more bang for your buck. I’m waiting to hear back on a few questions.

I have to switch from Apple though. If they overlooked this, what other quality issues lurk in the machine?

The guy who made the video of the MacBook Pro i9 thermal issues, Dave Lee, has a YouTube video for the top 3 laptops of the year. He goes over 8 laptops and provides links to each. The Razer and Aero 15X from Gigabyte do well as I recall. Here’s the link:

Mitigated but I think in the end not enough. I9 is just producing way to much heat. Needs to use a different body thicker and better thermal paste among other things
I don’t get how intel still specifies TDP of 45w for these chips. Tests have shown them to pull more than 100w under load. That is ridiculous for a laptop chip. I would gladly change to ARM optimised for laptop use if intel doesn’t reign in their power usage.

Guess I will be waiting for the 2019 Macbook Pro. My 2013 15” Haswell MBP still keeps up with these latest and greatest machines lol.

Any time I start seriously considering switching away from Apple I go to the Notebook Review forums and spend some time reading about folks' experiences with Windows devices and OEMs and the support that goes along with them.

For instance, I think the new Razer Blade 15 is quite lovely, but I've personally dealt with what passes for Razer support before. And I've dealt with Apple support before. While Apple is by no means perfect, Razer was at times quite dismissive and almost even hostile while I was trying to get them to replace a $150 mouse (a Christmas present I didn't ask for).

Being able to call Apple up and talk to real humans who will try to actually help you, or to walk into an Apple store ... there's a lot of value in that.

Years ago I took in this horrible, sickly kitten that I found out in the street. She got better and repaid me by ripping about 1/3 of the keys off my MacBook Pro and dropping them in the floor for my dogs to gnaw at. I gathered up the pieces (pretty sure my dog ate the 'S', but it was never recovered, at any rate). It was not fixable, and I went to the Apple store fully expecting to pay a huge repair bill and be without my computer for who knows how long.

The Apple employee took one look at my keyboard and grimaced and said, "Kids?"

And I laughed and explained what happened. And he took a battered cardboard box of loose key caps and keyboard components out from under the counter and spent 20 or 30 minutes patiently repairing the keyboard. Then he had me test it, shook my hand, and sent me home with a fully working notebook. Never asked my name, never checked the warranty status, he just fixed it.

Things like that are hard to put a value on, but it must be pretty high because here I am.

Im getting the 2018 model and will switch next year or the year after if Apple launches something fun, like I normally do with my tech stuff.

How about 5):
"Shake your head about the constant whine-fest that seems to be the norm now? All this drama. If it fits your bill buy it - if not move on..."

This full-on negativity of the last years is really beyond me... I have the MBP 13" on order for home use and know I will enjoy it. If I'd want the most powerful, noisy, ugly, windows machine I'd have bought it long ago. I have multiple systems at work and it's still clearly the best for me since I need the BSD base system (aka Unix system) plus the polished GUI apps...

I'm invested in MacOS because for me it's way above any other operating system and I spend >8h a day using it. I had problems with previous Apple items (there were always some issues with apple hardware, most often dealt with very nicely) but the whole package was always way better than anything else for me.

Plus, I value a nice work environment (hardware + software). I used Windows for the longest time. I also lived in Linux Desktop-land so I know the other options. Would I buy the i9. Hell no! But then, if I want max. power I push to our HPC clusters or the cloud.

Don't want to attack anyone but for me it's just no comparison o_O So...

Whoa , was considering getting a 15" Macbook Pro with i7 , want a non windows OS one to go back to teaching myself some Unix/Linux tools and I enjoyed my previous macbook 17" pro (am a sys engineer and already have a 13" Alienware with OLED screen I love with windows on it) ,

But that link for the Linux laptops is very interesting. Can get a faster video car , 32GB RAM , and 1 TB SSD for little more than half what doing the same in the Macbook Pro is going to be.

Just need to research that company some.

Did you buy a 2018 15"?
Yes, the i7 model. I've been using the laptop on and off all day and while at times it got toasty, overall seems ok for me.

Lightroom, I was hitting temps in the 80c range for my usage, I then used the Macs Fan Control to spin up the fans a bit faster and that helped.
Surfing, youtubing, email, light usage, I'm sitting in the mid 50s.

For me the 2018 is pretty good - the 13" i5 currently winging its merry way to me from China seems to out-perform its claimed cpu specification and the T2 chip is doing its stuff with the SSD speed as well as looking after the rest of the system. I don't deny the Intel/Apple issues with the faster processors but the rest of the upgrades are genuine and useful.

Congrats on the new system. Sounds like it is working well for you.

Still trying to decide on a 2018 unit. My 2015 15" still has one year of AppleCare so I think I can get a decent return for it. But not sure if I will hate the 2018 keyboard.

If you want to run linux utilities and scripts you just install a linux on your windows 10 PC. See this article for details. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10

AMD cpus are still not that great . Their gpus have gotten better

I'm still undecided. Even with all the throttling. It's just disappointing. I have a late 2013 15" MBP. I could hold on to it for one more year. But I've been "waiting" for quite a while now. I want to see more reviews of people using FCPX and maybe some people using Xcode, Unreal Engine and other game development tools.

I've been thinking about the Razer Blade 15 or might wait to see if they update the Razer Blade Pro 17" model with i9 and GTX 1080 Max Q since they currently have a sale now.

AMD cpus are fantastic - they just have not targetted the laptop market the same way they have desktop. The chip packages are actually pretty huge so not suitable for rmobile. But I believe they are working on this. Hopefully they wills hake up the laptop market in a year or two.
