Latest ios made me change mind about 13 mini - people reporting struggles on ios17 for 4gb of ram.

Iphone 5 was a super fast phone until ios 6 hit it. Then ios7 kind of reinvented iphone 5 and it became faster than with og shipped version.

Had perfectly snappy se1 - one of the ios updates made it totally unusable. The same story for se2.

So i tend to trust people on this one as well - i had 13 mini at launch and know it was plenty fast, but my 14pm was struggling and still is with some bugs on ios 17 here and there(keyboard, photo gallery). So i am not holding my hopes up for 13 mini - unless you find it on og shipped ios and never update.

iphone 15 pro is the perfect upgrade for iPhone mini users.

All the iPhones in our home that can run iOS17, run iOS17. That would include a SE2, a 13.mini, and a generic iPhone 12. All our iPads run iPadOS17 as well, including a mini-4th gen and a mini-6th gen.

That's probably a 5th gen mini. Iirc, the mini 4 (A8/2GB) only supports up to iOS 15.

You are correct. We have so many aging devices in our home, without doing a current inventory, I get mixed up. I’m still using a 2009 MacBook Pro on its umpteenth battery and a SSD implant. The OS was frozen years ago, as is the version of Firefox it supports. Still usable for torrenting and when my wife is using the MacBook Air.

Maybe no more iPhone Mini, but the flip and fold-phones are most likely in development at Apple too.
I'm not worried, a smaller phone for the pockets will come and will be available when my Mini isn’t to my pleasure anymore. I can change battery one time too, but my mini is doing well at 90% 🔋

Apple foldable? Not so soon:

A folded iPhone will be aiming for the same size as a current regular iPhone Pro - the point is not to make them smaller than they are, it's to give them a much larger screen.

I buy a lot of my family's iPhones, bought 12 Mini/13 Minis and from the feedback I got back after I changed them to 14/15, Apple didn't quite do an Xperia in that it wasn't a smaller phone with no compromise. Both users reported a much better experience going to the mainstream size despite being concerned about the size.

I would also agree - I was a big buyer of Android mini phones, but the time where they made sense as a smartphone is gone. There will be outlier users who do so little on their phones in the 2020's that it does make sense, but there's not enough of a market for manufacturers to warrant making them.

The good news is that most people are very adaptable, and often find that they have been living in a narrow niche after they try something new. Sometimes they even find advantage in something they thought they wouldn't like.

Of course, if there’s no choice, then people will make do, they’ll survive.
And of course there’s a reason the majority preference is the majority preference, there is an objective advantage in that preference. But the value of that advantage is still subjective. There is also an objective advantage in the minority preference.
And of course some of the minority are just being stubborn, and some might even prefer the majority preference if they just give it a chance. But if you’re making any kind of quantitative prediction as to how much of the minority are in this category, then I would say that without a survey/study, that’s just a guess.

I adapted from C/PM and DOS to Macintosh before many on this forum were born!

I moved to rural México 6+ years ago and have adapted to life with far less modernity than is the norm in the USA.

How about the adaption of not needing the next "new thing"? Of being content? Of not "upgrading" until something fails?

Back to the topic of what comes after the mini ... the 15 Pro has been suggested and some think that it is a good alternative, while others don't want the additional size and weight.

How did this become so contentious, with allegations of stubbornness and other character defects?

I also don’t understand the attacks on those that want a small phone. You don’t see this attitude from iPad Pro users towards the iPad Mini

It’s not like Apple are going to ditch the >6” devices if they release a new Mini
There are people who argue against smaller (or bigger) iPads too. I find people just like to affirm their own choices, and are bothered when others express opinions that differ from their own. I don’t think it’s always consciously malicious, they might even think they’re helping people by trying to convince them (maybe they are in some cases). I think the root of it is just a tendency to believe that one basically knows all they need to know in order to make a sound judgement even on behalf of others—when in actuality, there is a lot of missing information.

True.

One’s iPhone choice is informed by many personal factors, eg:

Dis/ability to read small text
Frequently used applications
Battery life
Network connectivity (5G/fast WiFi?)
Photography
Games
Videos
Hand/pocket size

BTW, the first time I saw a phablet, I thought “How cool for those with presbyopia or who are farsighted, esp for those who carry a handbag! A device that meets a specific need!” But they caught on with a much larger audience that doesn’t mind lugging a big phone to have a big screen and/or a bigger battery, etc. (I even bought an 8+ of which I quickly tired.)

Because I hold my iPhone 99% of the time, every gram matters. Weight is a big deal to me.

To each his/her own. YMMV

Is this in reference to me or my comment? 🧐

I’ve been looking at the Apple Refurbished page for months, looking for a 128gb 13 Mini & found one 2 days ago - being delivered today. Had to settle for Black, but as a backup to my Launch Day 13 mini (battery health at 91%🙂) I’ll not complain. Lots of 12 Minis still there but didn’t want 256gb, nor to pay $509 for one, and when I first bought one I had lots of issues - screen/battery overnight drain - so that was not an option. Wouldn’t buy a used/refurbished phone anywhere but from Apple - you get a new case & battery, & operating system repaired if needed. Glad I checked 2-3 times a day for all those months as 30 minutes after I placed my order I went back just to make sure a different color hadn’t suddenly popped up — they were sold out. If you are as dedicated to having a 13 Mini for as long as possible - which I am - check the Refurbished page often - never know when one might show up - grab it immediately.
