New hardware in the iPhone 5 that I would expect: HD camera for FaceTime HD, A5 chip, universal GSM/CDMA 3G, and NFC compatibility. Maybe an antenna fix/modification. The two big features will be iOS5 and its integration with NFC. Steve already foreshadowed that today, claiming that Apple IDs had more credit card accounts linked than any other digital payment service.

My phone is fine the way it is. I don't own an iPad but I want one so I think I will put my money towards that and skip on the iPhone 5. But in reality I will probably just buy both because I'm a sucker.

The A5 dual core looks promising.

Quad can also be interesting. Hmm, i wonder when will they put it on a mobile phone.:D

I agree with all that, except for the HD front camera which I'm not disagreeing with, I just don't have a view.

Other stuff we might see

1) Upgrade capacity of the top model to 64GB. Given that they skipped any flash capacity upgrades for the iPhone 4 I'd put a high probability on this for the 5.

2) Some upgrade to the rear camera. I don't know much about cameras but they're really important to lots of people so I doubt that Apple will want to be seen as standing still here, even if it's only to claim an even higher quality sensor and/or lens than the 4.

3) This might be wishfull thinking on my part, but I really hope that they carry on their record of decent increases in battery life that they had with the 3GS and the 4. There's not much either way in this from the iPad 2 launch. Steve did say that the A5 uses the same power as the A4 so the battery life at least shouldn't go down when they put an A5 in it but I'm really hoping that it will go up. A more efficient second generation display panel maybe, and/or some tweaks to the battery to get more capacity, either by finding more space in the case or by boosting charge density might be possible.

1 and 3 above would tempt me to upgrade my iPhone 4. The more they can do with battery life, the more tempted I become. Battery life is already very good, but for me I can never have too much.

I don't care nor am I excited for the iPhone 5. What I am excited for is iOS 5. I want new software features. New notifications, and all that good stuff. Spending $700 to upgrade a phone just for speed improvements is pointless to me. My iPhone 4 is fast enough.

NO

Ipad 2 not worth buying imo

take the carrier stronghold off from the iPhone locking. I don't like hearing "##&& you" from the carrier when I make a legitimate request for an unlock (traveling outside the country) when there are easier unlock options for every single phone. They already make $90+/mo. on the iPhone plan. No need to give them that much control. Besides it makes Apple more money as more people are able to use it (see verizon). Otherwise completely happy with current hardware.

Or else other carriers with cheaper plans + android is always an option :p

I'd like to see how they can integrate the soft and hard taps into the gyro like they did for iPad 2.

People are complaning about the "meager" update because they didn't see Apple revampt the software side--so obviously it LOOKS like the same iPad from 2 days ago...just thinner!

Obviously the processor bump was enormous and was a big feature. So are the cameras, even if crappy. But people think it sucked because they saw nothing new on the screen. Well this all but confirms to me that when people want "new" they either really want just a radically new design (as if making a glass rectangle that much more different was really possible) or what they really want is new features in software that they can see. Specs are a smokescreen since Apple just gave you all the specs you claime you wanted minus some ridiculously almost unicorn-like retina display on such a large screen: newsflash! unless you want to pay $1200 for the base model you it won't happen!

lol ok pretend like you dont want the new iPhone....also no one spends $700 except you, more like sell old phone + early upgrade = free new iPhone.

LoL same here. I don't own an iPad so I'm really excited about the specs on the iPad 2 and will be picking one up on 11 Mar 11. I, of course will be picking up the iPhone 5 on pre order because I too am a sucker!

I believe the iPhone 5 will have the smallest jump from iPhone 4 since the iPhone 3G improved from the first one. The original iPhone was a breakthrough. iPhone 3GS was the best one of that iPhone "3's" w/ a speed boost and video recording. And iPhone 4 was the first complete redesign, and offered great screen display, battery life, and camera. iPhone 3G is the least favorite of that bunch even though the App Store was introduced in its era and iPhones became more affordable. iPhone 5 will likely look like the iPhone 4 with just minor tweaks and a 4 inch screen. It is going to hardly be a jump just like iPad 2 is from iPad 1. Once we get that bigger screen, it will be like who cares after that? Playing catch up. Android still has 4.3 inch screens. Glass is still half empty. It is sad to see Apple so behind in hardware that a .5 inch increase is now a big deal.
I hope that was sarcasm.

I highly doubt Apple can afford any "small jump" upgrades for their iPhones. The iPhone is where Apple needs to focus on right now due to the Android overtake.
iPhone 5 will look like the iPhone 4 with "minor tweaks and a 4 inch screen"? I don't think a Dual Core A5 chip is anything minor. Also, a 4" screen is superb, and it might have the possibility for HSPA+ when it arrives.
4.3" screens are a bit too big imo, i'd like it to stay at 4" for a while if iPhone 5 has a bigger screen.
"It is going to hardly be a jump like iPad 2 is from iPad 1"? You must be kidding. The iPhone 5 should be an even bigger jump. Some people complain that the iPad 2 was a marginal upgrade to the iPad. Why? Mainly due to the lack of competition in the tablet market. It's the complete opposite in the smartphone market.

Apple always leaves out key features so they can get people to upgrade, like no video recording, no flash, no front facing camera.. Now that they've caught up with the competition on hardware, their rate of change is bound to slow down..
I'm happy with my IP4, and will probably just get the IP6 because a slightly bigger screen and a faster chip don't really do it for me.n But everyone has different needs for their devices, and I can only speak for myself.

I actually don't. I don't need the newest and the best device out. I used an original iPhone up until the iPhone 4. I just want the new software update.

I love the size of the 4G. I am not loving the idea of a bigger screen. Soon, I won't be able to fit my iphone in my pocket! :D
I just bought my iphone 4 on Tuesday. I did have a 3Gs. I am not expecting a huge hardware update either. I don't think much will be done but fix the antennae problem. I agree that the biggest update will come in software. I am super stoked about that!
Just my opinion....but since switching to iphone/mac, I am impressed by the ease of use. My uncle was also. As many cool things that android has to offer, you have to admit that apple products are easier to use, not to mention that they look much sleeker. I mean, my macbook takes care of itself. Same with my iphone. Itunes takes care of it. I never have to worry about anything. I will never use anything that isn't apple ever again just based on the convenience of it all.

Theres a difference between wanting and needing the new phone. You dont need it but you're lying if no part of you wants it. Why wouldnt you want a newer and better phone? I still have the 3GS. Do I want the iPhone 4? Hell yes, Id be lying if I said I didnt but I didnt need it so Im waiting for the 5.

If the next gen iPhone doesn't have a dual core A5 processor and 64GB available then no, I don't want it either. Those are the only two things that would matter to me.

Caught up to the competition hardware wise? Almost. A 4" screen is necessary to 'catch up', and you're right, they left out key features from the iPhone 4 and will be using some for the iPhone 5. Again, they will leave out features to make people upgrade.

I use have my iPhone 3G, and i think after i get the iPhone 5 i won't be upgrading for a while.

After seeing the new iPad 2 and someone that's in need of an iPhone for T-Mobile, I'm concerned that having a "universal" world iPhone may be far from the horizon. The iPad 2 that big however thin, had focused on a sleek design, A5 chip, battery life, yet Apple still made different models for AT&T and Verizon. If Apple couldn't make a "universal" 3G iPad, I don't think it would be possible for the next iPhone to be universal, let alone to even be able to fully operate on T-Mobile.

However, the chance of a redesign and the antenna gate issue are the reasons I'm reluctant to jump on the iPhone 4.

The iPad 2 doesn't really reflect the iPhone 5, if you think about it. The main selling points of the iPad 2 are FaceTime and faster speeds. The iPhone already has FaceTime, and Apple isn't likely to sell a new iPhone based simply on a speed increase. (The iPhone 3GS emphasized speed, but also brought other features like the compass)

iPhone 3G: "Twice as fast, for half the price"

iPhone 3GS: "The fastest, most powerful iPhone yet"

Apple certainly will market a new iPhone based upon speed alone. The A4 is a system-on-chip that is basically made up of the same components as the 3GS (except for additional RAM). The A5 has a more modern GPU and CPU. Now if only they cover up the antenna or something...

mainly ios5 is what i'm excited about. :) though the a5 chip is always welcome and some antenna re modification. i'll most likely stick with my iphone 4 though
