I don't think so ... I think they'll just drop the number, like they do with Macs.

iPhone (2012)

That would be confusing for a lot of the general public though, since they sell multiple versions (3GS, 4, 4S)

Not really. If you go out right now and buy an iPhone 4 ... you are really buying an iPhone (2010)

I know that, but the general public don't. Ask the guy across the street it he wants the iPhone (2010) and he probably won't have a clue what you're talking about.

Surely, the general public doesn't care that it is called the 4S as it is - they will merely call it the iPhone.

When they go to the store and ask for it, if they really want the older model, they will refer to it by price.

That's interesting..... but I pretty much assume it would be the 5 since it follows what seems to be an emerging pattern:

  • iPhone
  • 3G
  • 3GS
  • 4
  • 4S
  • 5
  • 5S
  • 6
  • 6S
  • etc.

Even though it will actually be the 6th iPhone model, I still think that Apple will call it the 5.....if they call it iPhone 6, it will confuse people.

Working on the fact that out of the 5 iPhones released so far, only 1 of them has had the correct designation (iPhone 4) why do people think that Apple will suddenly name the next one 6?

It has more chance being called iPhone 4G for the rollout of the 4G network, having said that, my money will be on iPhone 5 for the simple fact that 5, strangely enough, comes after 4.

Yeah, there's no "emerging pattern". The iP4 was the first iPhone with a numerical designation in it's name telling the consumer what generation phone it is.

I don't think calling it the iPhone 5 would confuse people at all...that's probably what most consumers would expect it to be called. However, I don't see it being called that.

And to the 2nd quoted post, I wouldn't call it "suddenly" naming it the iPhone 6...it will indeed be the 6th iPhone released, so not a stretch to think it would be called that. And combine that with the fact that it'll probably be rolled out with iOS 6...calling it the iPhone 5 doesn't make much sense. "The brand new iPhone 5 running brand new iOS 6 ladies and gentlmen!"

This is so cofusing that it looks like the iPhone 4s is the last phone we will see... the end of the world is starting...;)

If you really think about it with some common sense, the next iPhone will be called iPhone 5. The average consumer (people who don't visit macrumors) does not even realize nor count back how many iPhones have been released. If Apple called the next iPhone the iPhone 6, the average consumer would then be confused as to why their wasn't a iPhone 5.

I'm for non standard names. I'd love to see them make:

iPhone 4/S Evolution - iPhone 4 form factor with optional S performance and Evolution being the first new model name for LTE capable
iPhone 5/S Evolution - teardrop form factor with optional S performance and LTE

Same numbers, new names after this. Evolution (LTE) -> Synergy (further iCloud + device interaction) -> Genius (enhanced nextgen AI aka Siri 2.0)

lol that would be something...

anybody thinks the iphone will fall behind android in specs on the next iphone?
It's gonna be like Windows vs Mac

Mac can't keep up with Windows in terms of having the latest hardware, since Windows computers get the latest stuff every month cause they release a new computer every month.

But as far as day to day use goes, it's pretty much irrelevant cause the current iPhone 4 hardware could probably run any Android app as smooth as any android phone and runs even smoother than any Android. It might not be able to handle all these different widgets, "real multi-tasking" and such as smooth but then again it's a minimal difference to most of the consumers. And you would also have to offer battery life, smoothness, problem free software and stuff that a lot of Android phones do.

I'm still impressed that iPhone 4 has had the highest resolution for over 16 months.

Doubt it'll be the "iPhone 5". Makes no sense. It'd be confusing as to what the 4S was then if it came after the 4 but wasn't the 5. 1,2,3,4,4,5? No. Also, 1+1=11.

Reread my post.....I said that if they call it the iPhone 6 it would confuse people. iPhone 5 is most definitely what most people expect to be next.

And I think that "3G, 3GS, 4, 4S" could most definitely be considered an emerging pattern. I never stated that it is an actual pattern, but a pattern does appear to be emerging. I guess we'll all have to wait and see what's next......

One thing I am sure of; it won't be named iPhone 5, since the 4S is the 5th iPhone.

The 4s is basically the 4.5

are people REALLY forgetting there was a 3S and then a 4?

you don't go from 4 to 6, makes no sense

This thread reminds me of the Good Old Days when The Steve (peace be upon him) issued a command that no future Apple product could ever have the number 3 in it, after the Apple /// mess.

None ever did, either, until the LC III, which was pretty much smack in the middle of Steve's exile.

In any case, the only way we won't see an iPhone 5 next year is if Tim Cook decides to go for a non-standard naming scheme ("iPhone Zoom!"), period. And I can't imagine why he'd ever want to do something so cheesy.

We went from iPhone 3 --> 3GS --> 4. There's no reason why we now suddenly can't do 4 --> 4S --> 5.

What does the 'S' mean anyway?

I believe it refers to speed, at least thats what I recall from when the 3GS came out. Could be wrong though.

I think it might be called iPhone LTE or 4G. Or, if the increase the resolution significantly, they may call it iPhone HD or something similar.

What does the 'S' mean anyway?

It doesn't mean anything. It appears to be one of those monikers that got slapped on the product internally during development (likely as short for something like "iPhone 4 with Siri, and some other stuff too") and just never changed. My guess is once Steve's health started deteriorating they made a quick and firm decision to not call it the 5, and that was that.

This isn't the first time Apple's come out with products of questionable naming schemes, either:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Lisa

While the documentation shipped with the original Lisa only ever referred to it as The Lisa, officially, Apple stated that the name was an acronym for Local Integrated Software Architecture or "LISA". Since Steve Jobs' first daughter (born in 1978) was named Lisa Jobs, it is normally inferred that the name also had a personal association, and perhaps that the acronym was invented later to fit the name. Andy Hertzfeld[3] states that the acronym was reverse engineered from the name "Lisa" in autumn 1982 by the Apple marketing team, after they had hired a marketing consultancy firm to come up with names to replace "Lisa" and "Macintosh" (at the time considered by Rod Holt, vice president of engineering[4] to be merely internal project codenames) and then rejected all of the suggestions. Privately, Hertzfeld and the other software developers used "Lisa: Invented Stupid Acronym", a recursive backronym, while computer industry pundits coined the term "Let's Invent Some Acronym" to fit the Lisa's name.

BTW, my own personal theory is that the use of the 4S name is indicative that whatever Apple's got planned for next year is going to be a hell of a surprise. There's something in that sixth-gen iPhone that's made Tim and Steve decide this year's model isn't worthy of a full-number upgrade by comparison.

----------

it has to be 6. as the 4S is the fifth generation iPhone. it would make no sense calling it the iPhone 5.

The public at large doesn't know it's fifth-gen. They just know it's the newest. There's no reason next year's model can't be the 5.

Besides, as the fifth-gen iPhone, it makes equally little sense for Apple to call it the 4-anything. But they did it anyway.

So, now that is extra official the new iPhone is the 4S, we can start talking about how is the next iPhone going to be. I'm sure the next iPhone will be the 5. Couldn't get the iPhone 4S now so I guess my next iPhone will be the most wanted 5.

Let's start with the speculations...
I'm speculating that you have a deep need for attention..... of course there are several iPhone 5 threads already started by attention seeking people and you could of simply piggy backed off of one of those threads.

Oh man... you totally figure me out. Yes, I have a deep need for attention and now I feel better that I got yours. You even took the time to come here and write me something. Thanks for your special attention. I can sleep better tonight.

Not true. Watch the June 2009 WWDC keynote when the 3GS was announced. Schiller specifically said "The S is for speed." Given the dual core processor, the moniker is still applicable to the 4S.

What would be the reason for you to post this thread, knowing that there are probably at least 5 or more of the same exact thread? It obviously is because you have a need for attention.
Why stop at speculating about the i5? Seeing as there are a ton of threads about this subject you should of jumped to the i6.
Oh, and sometimes attention isn't a good thing..... like the kind of attention I'm giving you. It's the kind of attention you give to the annoying little kid that won't stop bothering you or the idiot that wants to keep talking during a movie. You give them attention to encourage them to shut up.
