So far, all the hardware issues known with the 17 Pro series:

  • Aluminum body dents and scratches upon impacts even when the phone is in a case
  • Speaker makes buzzing/static noises when the phone is charging and/or listening to audio on very low volumes
  • Back camera module makes a clicking sound whenever opening the camera app and/or switching lenses
  • Front camera/Face ID sensors make a clicking noise when Face ID activates

Feel free to add any other issues you’ve experienced. This is a ridiculous level of hardware issues for a Pro phone.

If you seem to think none of these issues exist, refer to the links below:

1. Mine is in a case. Dropped once on a hardwood floor already. No damage.

2. Not experiencing this issue.

There are obviously going to be defects with every model since iPhones are mass produced, but these appear isolated incidents.

If it was normal, some devices would not have it while others don’t.
Noises of this sort vary in all sorts of devices. Quite how loud the click is when engaged depends on exactly where the sensor happens to be at start-up, the orientation of the device, and tiny variations in how loosely it moves before it is electromagnetically stabilised.

Small clicks and whirs are normal in devices with physical components that move, like cameras however small.

My iPhone 13 mini that has worked perfectly for four years clicks faintly when shifting from ultrawide to main camera, and the stabilisation system whirrs audibly when held close to the ear in a quiet room (most rooms aren’t quiet enough). I seriously doubt any phone doesn’t do this; it’s just that some will be a bit louder than others and approximately 100% of people don’t notice or care. And noises will naturally increase as camera size increases, as it has done on the 17 Pro.

I don’t doubt the 17 Pro, a brand new design, has some teething fit-and-finish problems and maybe the clicking speaker or whatever. But I doubt there is anything wrong with the cameras.

First time I returned a Pro Max for the speaker noise issue and they said they had heard of the issue before but had no idea what to do about it, so I picked up an Air and walked out. The second time I returned a Pro for the camera clicking and they seemed clueless this time too, so I picked up a base 17 and walked out.

Also, trolling? Really? Do you guys even know what that means?

Clearly you didn’t check the link to the Apple website discussion where a bunch of other people share the same exact issue with the speaker noise and provide audio/video evidence. Meanwhile you are sitting here calling the issue “anecdotal.”

I could provide links to discussions about the back cameras and Face ID clicking as well, but I was almost certain people on this forum could use Google in 2025 if they were so inclined to research these problems. I guess I was wrong.

I don’t understand how you are trying to frame an invitation to share hardware issues you’ve experienced as trolling, like how much have you been conditioned to blindly defend Apple?

I appreciate you sharing your experience. In the initial post, I don’t recall you sharing your support experience- nor the links for that matter.

My reply post was delayed as I was in flight most of yesterday- that’s on me; I own that. As I said before, it would be fair to include your support experience in your initial post and “Feel free..” this is where you and I disagree. That’s cool.

Apple, like any other company has their faults, short comings, and outright blunders. This is where we agree. My opinions on faults and short comings from Apple, isn’t for this post— you start one up I’m sure you have me in the thread.

However, in this specific case, you invited us all into your experience (you get what you get from that) and your initial post didn’t include your support experience, which is why I asked about yours; excluding it changes the tone of your initial post.

Whatever you deem as normal is irrelevant to the fact that the majority of devices from Apple never make these sounds, and I’m not talking about holding things like the camera up to your ear, stabilization motors and the like. I’m talking about sounds that are audible when the device is a usable distance away from you.

To have such anomalous sounds that weren’t on any of my previous devices or anyone else’s that I know personally, on a brand new phone that I paid well over $1000 for, that is not acceptable to me.

Whether it’s acceptable to you or the majority of people doesn’t make any difference to me. Perhaps Apple lets their quality slide because they realize most people don’t notice or care, and keep these subpar, manufacturing error-laden devices, but there are still going to be plenty of people like me who expect a new phone from Apple to have the excellent fit and finish of devices released in the past by the same exact company.

The only issue I personally had with my 17 Pro Max was a rather washed out and green/blue tinted display, which is nothing more than the standard display lottery we deal with every year.

The phones being more susceptible to scratches and dings, due to being crafted from aluminum vs titanium or stainless steel, isn’t a hardware defect. It’s just how aluminum is.

I've had three 17 Pros since launch day (long story that revolves around indecisiveness with the Air, don't judge) and none of them had any unexpected noises made during any function. On 1 out of 3, I experienced a small nick in the orange finish just next to the screen bezel after a 2-3 foot drop out of my pocket onto the sharp corner of a glass-topped bathroom scale. It was small, but noticeable. It was in a very, very thin case that offered minimal protection. Should it have happened? Maybe not, but I should probably have had it in a better case. The first Pro was dropped a couple of times in that same case (with screen protector) including one drop from 4 feet onto concrete and it survived in mint condition. I've even won the so called "screen lottery" all three times and had flawless displays.

So, while some users experience may vary, I am not sure this is a widespread and consistent as some would have us think.

I agree it’s not a defect but it’s an issue in my book. I don’t think any of the past aluminum iPhones have dented this easily.

The Pro line has predominantly Samsung displays so it’s not much of a lottery on those. The base 17, Air, and Pro Max are the ones that people mostly play the screen lottery with. But anyway, do you have an Air or a Pro now after all that?

Maybe you’re right, but would you be happy if your brand new phone was scratched straight out of the box?
depends oh how big the scratch is. Generally I have a case and screen protector waiting for my new phones and they go from the box to the case with a screen protector before I even turn them on.

I wish people understood that "you not having a problem" is indicative of nothing in the broader scope of a potential issue with a given product.

Please try not to be so dismissive when people report having issues.

It's highly unlikely that folks are making things up, as it provides no joy to come and post about things and then be told "who cares" - "doesn't exist" - "you're being a karen" - "no problems with mine . NUFF SAID" - "you sound like you're trolling" - etc etc etc

Okay, so if you get a $1200 phone with a scratch on it before you even touch it, that’s potentially okay with you. More power to you honestly. I don’t like to put up with such things.

This is every year. And just like every year, >99% of users won't experience or notice any of these issues.

But like I always say, if you try hard enough to find a problem, you will always be successful.

I really don't understand the purpose of these posts. This is like the 100th post on these same issues. If you don't like the iPhone and hate the direction Apple has gone in, just go by another make phone. Buy a Google or a Samsung, or whatever. I am not saying that to be flippant or anything. But Apple is not going to change anything. It's not like Apple is going to have a massive recall and go back to Titanium frame. It's not going to happen.

This is the direction Apple has decided to go in, and newsflash to some people, Apple considers the new iPhone 17 lineup to be an enormous success, just by how well it is selling. What possible reason is there for Apple to change anything. Just because some people don't like Aluminum isn't going to change Apple's current and future course.

Some people are working themselves into a tizzy over these issues and it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Life is way, way, way too short for this. Just purchase what makes you happy and be happy and content with your life. Both Google and Samsung make great phones. If you feel they have moved ahead of where Apple is currently, it's not a sin to believe that and just go with that brand and their models.

If you say you are stuck with Apple's IOS ecosystem and cannot make the switch, well yes I feel for you. But that is something that you are going to have to come to terms with, because Apple is not changing.
