Nvidia

I've heard from sources at Apple that all logic boards for MacBook Pros from the past year or two have been recalled due to the failing portable NVIDIA cards that are affecting the whole industry at the moment, so don't be surprised if Apple doesn't end up using NVIDIA in the new MacBook. Apple has a history of punishing suppliers who screw up.

Shouldn't we be the ones told about the recall? You know, the customers? It hasn't happened.

Delivered means in store or just in a media event?

I have to buy a new computer before the 18th (I have to give a demo) and I've been holding up since I'm waiting for the new macs.

Does anyone know if it's going to be the 14th in store, or the 14th when they tell us that maybe it'll popup in stores in two weeks ?

The Nvidia problems have existed for a long time, there was an article where an anonymous Dell worker (I think it was) said they have known about these problems for over a year. It is something wrong with the dye packaging materials failing with heat and it does not affect only portable chips, but all the chips, some claim as far as the early 8800 desktop chips.

Nvidia won't have it's OEM customers recall all chips if only a small percentage will ultimately fail. Afaik Dell and others released some updated bios were they changed the cooling fans work rates to keep temperatures down. One can criticize Intel chipsets all he wants, they are still a lot better than ATI and Nvidia counterparts, both in ultimate performance and stability (not considering the integrated graphics part which is not very powerfull whatever the manufacturer). That is why almost all of the enthusiast crowd uses only Intel chipsets.

I could only see this as good. Especially with the MacBook Pro's. If The MBP includes a dedicated GPU, coupled with a Integrated GPU in the Chipset... it could mean Hybrid SLI.
That would be awesome! Its very possible, there is a Sony Vaio that allows you to change mode to stamina and performance? That's because its running a integrated and a dedicated GPU.

A MBP with longer then 5 hours battery life? ULTIMATE MOBILITY!!!!

Because, when I bring my MBP to college, I hate to carry a battery charger since it just add more weight to my sling bag and I rarely use high performance softwares in college, usually use Word, Safari and basic apps, being able to turn off a dedicated GPU will definitely extend my MBP battery life more then 5 hours ;)

Oh yea, earlier I was concerned when Nvidia announced to recall GeForce 8600M GPUs, but so far Apple do not issue any recalls and honestly, I posted on Apple discussion forum about my MBP GPU heat and one user posted that that is the normal temperature, besides, Im having no problem with my GPU, played CoD4 with no problems at all. No screen blurring or whatever.

Apple announce to recall the iPhone adapter (I forget when is it) because of some issues, so Im sure Apple would do the same thing if the problem is really present to most MBP owners.

Yes, I want... though I will probably wait for a few months so wrinkles can be ironed out (assuming my iBook G4 lasts that long). Hopefully prices will be 'aggressive' as well.:D

Nvidia and UEFI

Last time I checked, 5 minutes prior, Nvidia is not a standing member of the Unified Extensible Firmware Group.

http://www.uefi.org

Last time I checked Nvidia's chipsets don't work with UEFI nor will it work with Nehalem.

Read that article: The business politics trump everything.

Apple will not jeopardize their preferred status with Intel and Intel won't jeopardize it's precarious stylish status having Apple on-board.

Apple will release their own chipsets that comply with Intel and leverage Apple specific solutions making their hardware differentiation obvious from general PC laptops, desktops and workstations.

As long as:
1) Battery life doesn't suffer.
2) Prices stay roughly the same.
3) NVIDIA optimize their cards to handle Core Image better.

Then bring it on.

I still maintain that all of these rumours are being leaked by Apple themselves to misdirect us, and in the 14th instead of releasing new MacBooks they'll finally upgrade the Mac mini.

i don't agree...everyone is entitled to their own opionions

but i hope this rumour is true...kick ass :)

What is needed is a smaller and lighter (400 - 500 g) subnotebook. With true Firewire and Ethernet ports. Even the MacBook Air is too large and heavy for us (besides lacking the essential Firewire connectivity).

Apart from the Firewire bit (never going to happen) I'd say this is probably coming at some point.

However, Apple might choose to put a tablet style SCC out instead. Like a big (8" screen) iPhone/Touch. Running Mac OSX. All the pieces are there. It could be made to be an input devce for larger desktop/iMac machines too...

That way they've covered the EEE-style threat (which is substantial, economy woes etc mean these machines are very popular) and not cannibalised Macbook sales.

Back to the topic at hand, I'd be surprised if Apple did go with nVidia like this. It would upset Intel too much.

Nvidia's integrated graphics offer a huge performance leap over Intel's offerings. Their chipsets are also a combined North and Southbridge, reducing board space and power consumption.

Using this chipset on the MacBook Pro means your Mac uses integrated graphics when idle and uses both discrete and integrated graphics when GPU load is high (giving extra performance over the GPU alone).

It makes sense, especially with Snow Leopard coming next year. They can't afford to have any of their line using Intel's X4500.

Maybe interesting but the mails we receive as a pc shop from nvidia include since 1 month news from Apple....

As I said before "With the campaign release of Netbooks", those laptop that haven't a strong graphics cards or those who are not road warrior, would be eliminated from the market:eek:

This is great news but wouldn't it throw into some doubt the rumors of a price drop?

I would love to see the NVIDIA make it into the Mini as well......

If all the MacBook rumours are true (which I doubt), where does that leave the relatively crippled MBA?
