I'd be doubly out of luck. Devalued, no new discount, and no new macbook.

So I'm waiting.

Still.

With credit card in hand.

Crikey -- I'm ready to boost the economy and spend some money. Sounds like if all of the people on this forum who are waiting like me all went out and bought a new macbook, the recession would be over

Isn't the credit cards and buying a lot of stuff what actually cause it? I mean, you talking about your credit card and buying new laptops. I'm not an expert on economy so don't take me too seriously.

Well...

Well, not credit cards per se, but it sure sounds like too much debt in general was a big contributor. And credit default swaps... whatever those actually are.

I've got the cash behind it ready to go, though. I'm just waiting for the new MB line to spend it on.

I find your quote about Ivy League status symbols and daddy with lots of money extremely rude and condescending. I bought a MBP for my son who just started at UMASS Lowell majoring in Sound Recording Technology. He is not a "professional", at least not yet, but the MBP is essential for his future line of work. UMASS is not by any stretch of the imagination Ivy League, nor am I a rich daddy with lots of money to spend.

I work very hard for my money...I am a 3rd year History teacher in Florida (last in the nation in per-student spending!) where our teachers' union has been in a fight with the school board to get raises and step increases. I have 120 Special Ed students and I put in my all to get them educated and ready for the world; it is a daily struggle and my day does not end at 3PM. Next time, try thinking before you make remarks that belong in the trash.

As a Lowell alum (BS '04) the MBP is not reserved for the spoiled rich kid who doesn't understand he's buying way more horsepower than he needs. My sister uses one and she went to Fitchburg State College also in Massachusetts... her major was film... just with the SRT program at UML her program was at a no-name school where you need the computer's horsepower to do the technical work.

There are people with the legitimate need for the horsepower besides those who want an external measuring stick of "how much daddy loves me". Besides, isn't that what cars are for?

(As an aside... good luck to your son... my major was in Math and I knew a few SRT majors.... having to get through the calculus 1 and 2 to get to through the physics course is no chore on top of the ridiculous time demands of the music program. They put them through their paces....... though I strenuously object to the word "UMass"... feels so dirty.)

Now, as for me... I'm waiting on a price downgrade to I can pick up a cheapo macbook to act as a quasi-media center. But if I were to use it for research I'd be damn sure to be picking up a MBP... as it is I've already got my research machine in my grubby little hands. Of course I didn't go to an ivy.... but I can think of a few of my own research problems that would put a top of the line MBP through its paces.

Im on the wagon for before the holidays! I gotta get the money together this weekend and Tuesday I'm checking the computers in study hall. I already got someone to take me to the store, only problem is I'm screwed unless they have a price drop (100 only sounds decent, eh)! But with SJ not apparently giving us a **** right now (can't believe I just said that!), who knows! We may have to wait until June (better not)! Apple seems to used to really care about its customers in return us being OK with their secrecy. But now the secrecy is over, they are giving up the over end of the deal (mobile me, iPhone 3G). I gotta say though that :apple: is now really dependent on people that aimlessly walk into the Apple Store just because of how their always reading articles about them or have a friend that told them about how wonderful apple was (i.e. my mom last weekend when she got her iMac). They take advantage of people saying they need more than they really do, and it works (i.e. my aunt and uncle buying my cousin a lappy for college.). But once you become a full blown fanatic, you see that apple cares less and less about you. They care about converting, not keeping their customers.

My son has always struggled with math...he didn't do very well on the placement exam so he is doing pre-calc now and is running an A. We got him some help his senior year in HS. the Mother of one of my former students who teaches college level math...she really helped him a lot. He did really well in HS physics, strangely enough. He really like UMASS (sorry) , and his 2 roomies at Eames Hall are both engineering majors, so he has that built-in tutoring.
P.S. Here is the band he had before college...he is Mike, the lead guitarist..he writes his own music and lyrics...give a listen

High school physics--and often introductory college-level physics--are algebra-based, not calc-based. And frankly, calculus just isn't very intuitive to most people*; it takes a good teacher, and a dedicated learner, to understand it.

*And those who it is become math majors. Freaks. ;)

he hated Algebra with a passion and did really bad...barely passed the course...but he enjoyed physics...his teacher was this small powerhouse of a woman who showed her love of the subject to all her students. It definitely made a difference to him.

Calculus wasn't that hard for me. I also found it very intuitive.

Thanks a lot.

Didn't get it. sorry.

Now where did this rumour came from?
Speculation from myself.

I wasn't quoting him for not opening a dead link. Just for not knowing yet about October 14th, because it was all over the web.
Then, I just didn't get he was just kidding. That's why I apologized.
