Economic Crisis happenings (not what you think!)

Why does everyone keep saying it'd be a bad idea for Apple to release a new macbook in this economic crisis? Did you know that the sales of VIDEO GAMES, HDTV's, and COMPUTERS have gone UP? This is because people are staying at home to avoid the high costs of gas and the outside world.

Besides, regardless of the crisis, Apple will continue to sell a macbook. No matter what, that remains. Why not release a new one? It's not like it's costing them more money, they've already done the R&D!

Think, people. Knowledge is power!

i dont think apple will holdback their new lineup due to eco crisis...
and the crisis isnt going away in just a few weeks... not even months.... it may take decades....
any further waiting will just let the competitors increase the gap of market share... because which average customer would prefer a mac which cost 400 dollar more than a pc notebook and just have 70% the power compared with the current gen notebooks.
i mean u get 4gb ram, decent graphiccard and 300gb for 900 dollars or somethin like that.
and people like we here are an exception... get it guys...
there are a hell lot of people who doesnt care about macrumors and just buy as they need them. not all are gadgets addicted like we are... they are satisfied with the last gen ipods even though new came out and they give a damn.

A little ragged, but right on the mark. ;)

IF Apple turns up with a moderately priced, high feature, MacBook replacement, it will jump start sales despite the economy. Otherwise, many users will continue to look for bargains in the Windows basement with more bang for the buck, VistaBeast notwithstanding. In fact, a good number of folks I know are going back into the "used" pool for last year's top end Windows machines that can be cheaply upgraded: EG - $650 will get you a 1-2 year old Thinkpad x60s with essential upgrades (3gb ram and 320gb/7200rpm HD) that will make it a Win XP Pro screamer. GRANTED, not a MacBook (I really miss my BlackMac which went to college with my daughter) but at two for one on even an Apple refurb unit, it is more than acceptable.

That's convenient.
my college campus is now offering 600 dollars off macbook pros while supplies last. This doesn't hint to an update soon? or does it?

I would suggest that it does. They are trying to clear out the current stovks before the new ones are released.

i would take the current gen if u have 600 off...
i mean yes we all want the new one... but i mean u only have to pay 1,4k (cheaper than refurb and ur mac is new!!)...
well u have to decide if its worth it or not

being special is so boring in this century :D

I think it looks to thick to be the air hmmmmmmm

I am fairly sure that is the Macbook Air. The lighting and the black counter top makes it hard to see the contour edges.

+1

Would all those students in that photo happily writing notes on their laps want to be looking down more, and also using up screen space with a big unresponsive screen based keypad? Then when studying in the library later have less screen real estate and be looking down for hours, trying to write essays etc. Or prop it up and have aching arms from holding your arms in the air for hours? Or have a separate plug in physical keypad to take everywhere and try to balance on their knees with the display instead? <snip>

I could not agree more!

The idea behind the onscreen keboard works on a pocket device because of the absolute need or space savings (In my opinion). I don't like the idea of a large onscreen keyboard UNLESS it is absolutely needed. Having tactile feel is something that is important to many people who use computer equipment to type reports, articles, books, stories, etc..

So whats up with these so called "sources" of these rumor sites? Did any of them actually say that there would be an event on the 14th or did they just say thats when the 'books would be released and the rumor sites assumed an event?

If they did claim there would be an event, what are those "sources" excuses now?

Didn't they have an event called "something fun" or something like that and announce some iPod speaker dock and something else really insignificant?

Yes, it was the abomination that steve loved and everyone else went, "meh, overpriced, doesn't sound that great."

Quick glance at the online store suggests... it's dead. Couldn't find it even when using old ipod models as the compatible model.

And to hell with economic crisis the world doesn't orbit around America.

How little you know about global economics. "Look, world super power having economic issues! Oh, it's okay, our money is still good.. What? Our money is tied to the US Dollar.... ****!" or... "We make a great product, too bad no one in America can afford it right now, that's okay, we've still got that huge influx of cash from.... .... ..... the UK?"

So what are you guys thinking:

1) Wait till Macworld. (Nooooo!)

2) Silent Introduction

3) Silent Introduction (because they haven't redesigned the case, just a speed bump etc)

4) November Introduction.

Also, does anyone know whether Steve Jobs:cool: said that by the end of 2008 Apple would have all aluminium cases etc to be greener, because that would suggest that they would have to be this year. Fairly sure he did, but is it this year?

I don't think that the current economic situation will change Apple's plans on releasing a new product, but it may cause them to scrap any event plans. A lot less planning is needed for a silent launch and if something even worse were to happen with the economy, it could look in pretty poor taste to have an event celebrating what many consider to be overpriced computers.

I just don't think Apple's products are at the forefront of consumer's minds with the economic situation and upcoming election. Hopefully the new Macbooks will be released soon. I don't care if there is an event or not for it.

On another note, I still haven't converted to Mac - my plan has been (for months) to do that once updates are released. I'm starting to second guess myself, whether I want to be at the mercy of Apple's secretiveness every time I am looking to upgrade...Mac users - is it worth it?

I am going with a Silent Introduction on October 14

I just find it odd that we just have not seen any spy shots yet

"There is zero reason for Apple to release new computers now for two big reasons:

1 - people are going to be thinking twice about buying big ticket non-essential items at present, especially business users.

2. There is little chance of Apple getting any press in the mainstream media - the economic crisis and presedential race are taking up ALL the headlines.

I think apple would have to wait till at least after the election to get maximum benefit out of a product intro in the press."

 How is Apple suppose to make money when most stores are out of laptops. Are you suggesting that Apple will sit on their laptops to get some press and b/c the elections are going on. The economic crisis is just starting and you are saying that Apple wont release computers while our economy is weak? This makes no sense to me.

Sorry, not sure how to quote!

So - I think Apple would release new laptops - if they've spent the money on R&D, they'll want a longer period to sell them in. And arguably the economic crisis will last at least another year, with a slow recovery. Apple are hardly going to wait that long to release another laptop.
I agree.

That's convenient.

This totally hints to an update. They are trying to move inventory to make room for the new laptops.

I'm hoping for #2. I don't want to deal with a line line when I purchase my MBP. ;) I would think that Apple would want to hold an event for something like this though.
