can't believe the lines are this big for current iPhones, might be the best time to put my phone on ebay and then get the 3g next month.

Americans are stupid;

"What are you queuing for?"
"I don't know but there's a queue"

Strange, I always thought it was us Brits who had the international reputation for orderly queuing! Which now seems to have become a lost art, certainly, at bus stops these days.

Anyway, I expect the picture is of the usual crowd wanting to spend a free day emailing all their friends and family back in the Old Country, wherever that happens to be.

All that I ever seem to see in the Apple store in Regent Street!

...

People still want iPhone 1.0's this late into their product life cycle? Especially when everyone is so sure that the 3G iPhone is going to be released in just 2 weeks.

Don't people check the internet about products they're about to pay several hundred dollars for first?

I just googled "iPhone"... the first 2 websites (Apple and Wikipedia) don't talk about the expected update... but then on Google News, 3 of the 5 top articles are about the 3G iPhone being released in 2 weeks. The other 2 are about all the countries it's launching in this year.

... seriously, if you're going to be paying that much, wouldn't you want to go and do at least an hour of research to make sure it's worth it?

It's not stupid, and it's not silly. It's unbelievable.

What other IT store/manufacturer do you know that has queues forming outside for no reason?

Apple's marketing and Apple's strategy has obviously been unbelievably successful. And I'm sure they are walking round HQ with smiles on their faces.

People are so similar to cattle sometimes.

That place is a zoo anyway. I cannot believe those lemmings all started joining the line. Crazy!

The name is. . .

Insanity...stupidity..follow the herd mentality...you name it that is the picture of it

It's called the Reality Distortion Field. If you are new to Apple products, you must learn to deal with this fundamental force of our universe.

This reminds me of the practice of NY discos to hire people to stand in the rope lines in front of their clubs to make their places look popular. Maybe Apple is generating interest by hiring a bunch of people to pretend to be interested?

As for me, my iPhone will turn 1 in September, so I am not looking to replace it soon with the first 3G model -- I'm waiting for the piPhone, you know, the 3.1415926. . .G version!

Well I bet the unlockers still want the original phone for a while. I'm sure the 2.0 software will probably break the unlocks and jailbreaks for a couple months, so the 1.0 phones and unlocks will still be selling strong for a while.

Um, I saw people standing in what must have been a 30 minute line for burritos in the mall food court the other day. Are they sheep? Or did they just really want a burrito? People are generally intelligent enough to gauge how much of their own time they are willing to spend waiting for a product they want or need. If some of the "leaked" photos of the new iPhone turn out to be real, I'm not sure I blame them for standing in line.

How many people out there would think that hanging around Apple rumor sites is just a big waste of time? Just because one group of people may not find value or entertainment in an activity doesn't mean another might.

You know, those people probably wasted a LOT less of their time standing in that line than most of us waste here reading posts and trying to guess what every little Apple related thing might mean.

Who's calling who names???

:D

Brilliant reply. Exactly what I wanted to say, but didn't quite know how to word it (without being jumped on).

They are just practicing for when the next new Apple product comes out. Queueing is becoming an Art form.

No need to chance missing on what ever may or may not be there. LOL.

Americans would NEVER say "Queing", We would say lining up! Who looks "stupid" (to use your term) now???
Also, as stated elsewhere- most of those people were not Americans, but were foreigners buying them to take back and unlock!

Have a great Memorial Day three day weekend, my fellow Americans.

Nice touch, I've always thought of it, up until now as the tri-Phone - piPhone makes much more sense.

Apple is a marketing company, sometimes even more than they are a technology company. Steve is a mirror image of Ron Popeil of "Ronco" fame. Sure the products they are hocking involve new inventions, but often times it's just a twist on something that had existed previously. The real genius comes in the sell, where they lay out various scenarios and show you how the product will make your life easier, demonstrating the products in front of a large crowd that cheers, oohs, and aahs, as each of the product features is demonstrated. In the end, people queue up with dollars in hand, fighting to hand it over in order to receive this great new product that will simplify their lives.
