this is excellent. it compares very favourably to getting another unsubsidised phone and taking simplicity 25, a data bolt on and cloud wifi.

I knew they'd have to change the allowances, should give sales a boost, finally I can SMS to my hearts content knowing I'm not gonna get shafted!

that's much more like it. it seems reasonably comparable to another unsubsidised phone + simplicity 25 + data bolt on + cloud. very good.

i was comparing the buying an iphone and unlocking to using the standard contract, not the iphone to another unsubsidised phone.

Great news!

And for anyone interested in downgrading their tariffs with the new included minutes, i've just spoke to O2 and they said its fine... (Usually you can't downgrade for the first 9 months!)

Same here, have just downgraded mine over the phone. So when the bolt-ons are available, I will soon be getting more for less :D

Does anyone know when O2 bolt-ons take effect? So if I added one on 1st February, can you use it as soon as it's added, or do you have to wait until the next bill date?

I've noticed o2 are still keeping the unlimited********** usage in place, although I've not seen this clause before:

You may not use your SIM Card in any other device, or use your SIM Card or iPhone to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing or use them in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other customers of O2 or The Cloud. If O2 reasonably suspect you are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges, impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.

So they still want to make sure that you use their provided free minutes instead of any VoIP applications that may appear following the SDK release.

So this starts on 1st Feb, when will we get our extra mins and texts from?

I have only had my iPhone 3 days so this is great news!

my post was not a comment on any of yours. and, in any case, my point applies equally to a jailbroken iphone.

thats just saved me £10 a month. I can downgrade, 600 minutes is just perfect for me, but 200 was useless! I suppose its similar in a way that iPhone in US had a price drop after 3 months or whatever it was. Maybe this time apple convinced O2 to drop prices, instead of AT&T refusing to drop prices when apple wanted more sales.

That makes a very big difference in my book and the iPhone is now a much more attractive package in the UK. As soon as it gets 3G....pounce! :)

Same. Couldn't agree more. Hopefully it comes March/April time, although we may have to wait longer, say until the summer. I don't there is much point having an EDGE phone in this country.

Very smart move, bring in 3G and i'll go look at one.

£259 though in a one off hit.. all my other phones have been free!

Funnily, this part doesn't bother me one bit. The handset cost was the best part they announced and represents good value.

This cheered me up, I just downgraded to £35 a month and all I lose is 100 texts, I was only sending around 340 a month anyway. Woooo.

Nice one O2! As soon as the iPhone gets 3G and 16B storage, I'll be obliged to buy one. But it would be nice if I could share EDGE/3G data over bluetooth to my laptop though.

....but i am guessing apple/O2 will give you a free (or cheap) iphone upgrade at the end of the contract term, if that is the case then the contract works out cheaper. otherwise stick with jailbreak.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one! Why would they give you a freebie, they made you pay full price on day one. When they release a new MacBook Pro I don't expect them to offer me a free upgrade or money off a new one, its not what they do. Apple are not going into the mobile phone market in the traditional way, they are doing it differently, customers will be itching to pay to upgrade in a year or so, like it or hate it Apple are doing things differently, personally I think its for the best as it will mean handsets have a perceived value rather than just being a throw away object and as your tariff won't be subsidising your phone you should find lower monthly bills long term.

My thoughts exactly. Where did he get the idea of a free upgrade from?

The no-VOIP clause was in the contract from day 1 (IIRC from when I signed up anyway).

That £35 tariff looks a lot more appealing now. I bet I'll cave in and buy one the week before iPhone 2 comes out!
