Maybe something to do with the cell hardware? Perhaps newer models are easy to update to EDGE and so are being done first?

nice to see o2 still upgrading their network to edge.now get a very quick connection at work.very happy.

hen I originally spoke to a customer services rep they said it would be released on the 19th if November, obviously that didn't happen. I phoned up the other day for a seperate reason and also asked about edge. The guys on the phone are able to see an edge' coverage map, aparrently its an option in a dropdown on the left of the map (the guy didn't understand that he was on the company network so was getting frustrated when I said I couldn't see it lol) anyway, he said they would be releasing it in December, I guess it will just be when they are happy enough with their coverage.

Seaham (SR7) has it, and Newcastle (NE1) doesn't. Go figure.

Esh winning DH9 has it(very small village) Yet theres a mast near me in pallion in sunderland which doesn't, although it pops up in penshaw as well.

Seems up here they are doing the small areas first - Maybe doing it so that if something goes wrong it won't affect a large number of people??

Hi all! Just discovered this forum and boy am i glad.

Had my iPhone for three days now and have noticed some really strange goings on.

O2 reckon i'm in an Edge enabled area (NE4, edge of Newcastle city center) and true, i have been getting a full five bars and some great speeds (387kbps according to i.dslrnet/tinyspeedtest) but here's the strange thing... i only have a blue square! I have no 'E" showing, nor can i access youtube which requires Edge!

According to my 'Usage' i have sent 6.9MB and recieved 30.3MB via the Edge Data Network??? Eh?

Then, a few minutes ago i get the dreaded 'Network Lost' message which i promptly dismiss - and it's then i notice the strangest of all strangeness...

I have no signal bars whatsoever but the magic 'E' sits as proud as punch with it's chin sticking out in the little blue box. I try the Youtube app, and, still without any signal bars, i begin downloading my first Youtube video on my iPhone! Part way through the download and the full five bar signal returns but the 'E' disappears... the Youtube vid continues to load and then plays!!!

I try another video and once again get the 'Youtube requires WiFi or Edge' message.

How bizzarre!

Coincidently (if you believe in coincidence?) although living in Newcastle for five years i am actually from that remote Durham village previously mentioned by another forum member. And it just so happens i will be visiting an aunt in EshWinning tomorrow so i will see what happens...

I love my iPhone and would have its babies if i could. I feel like i'm flirting when i whip it out. But as a phone it has begun displaying some serious character flaws.

I went into the O2 store at the top of Northumberland St in Newcastle today to ask about EDGE coverage. The guy there showed me a maping system that showed the EDGE coverage.

It was something like http://www.webmap.o2.co.uk/map/mapPage_final.asp , but this does not appear to work for me. It must have been an ibtranet site for him.

I wish they would make it available for us to use at home.

I found out that local edge coverage finishes 2 streets away from where i live :(

I got him to check Newcastle city centre as there was no coverage in the shop. The map was right and showed that there should be no coverage.

He says they are definatley updating the network to have better coverage. Will just have to keep my fingers crossed for home access.

Well did you check it??

I did indeed! Full five bars on Edge near the primary school. Odd for Eshwinning which being in the bottom of the valley is notorious for poor reception. Interestingly, Ushaw & Newbrancepeth (both higher up) werent that good, signal kept dropping out. Could only get a signal in the loft at New B.

Back in Newcastle and I found Edge working great up by the General Hosp. Got a speed test result of 1345kbps which I don't believe for one moment.

Was sent on a little trip by my company this week.

Office - Edge - Intermittent (WiFi)
Home - Edge - Good (WiFi)
Glasgow Airport - Edge - Good (also Cloud WiFi access)
Manchester Airport - Edge - None (no Cloud either)
Elesmere Port (Customer's Offices) - Edge - Intermittent (signal was down a little here)
Elesmere Port (Holiday Inn) - Edge - Good (no WiFi access of any kind - boo! - At least I had Edge)

Very happy I had the iPhone. Even without WiFi or Edge it still worked well enough (Google Maps in my pocket was very handy to have). Mail and SMS allowed me to keep in touch. I even made a few calls (all those minutes left and the end of my monthly billing period approaching - so use it or loose it time).

I've got a seek 43 phone (with a perfect screen - flush fitting chrome bezel - no sharp bits) and have not been suffering from the signal problems that have been reported by some others... So either I've been lucky and have traveled only in areas with good coverage and/or near masts - or there is some difference in the quality of manufacture of some units (some clod-handed factory worker not fitting the antenna correctly - like with bluetooth in Mac Pros?).

Yeah Manchester coverage is patchy for EDGE, at the moment. It has got better in the last month though. Hopefully that will continue. Would like it at home in Warrington. I even have an O2 mast two streets away.

btw. My week 43 is perfect too. Good screen, build etc etc.

i had edge for 2 secends no jokes

i was buzzing but then i was gutted

getin iphone tomoz :D

i live in warrington, the edge is quite good and improving!

town centre is covered in edge.

and in the last 2-3 weeks ive seen places be gprs one day then EDGE the next. i get edge in all my main places now (work, college, town, gf's house)

:D

EDGE hasn't hit the whole of East Warrington yet. It's a little patchy around Sainsbury's in town too.

Finger's crossed though. I do think things are improving. I just hope they don't partially roll this out. I'm hoping good coverage was a condition of O2 getting the contract from Apple.

Remember even the 3G version of the phone will benefit from good EDGE coverage as the O2 3G coverage isn't that great but EDGE is an acceptable fall back.

The coverage is great near the general hospital as the mast is on the west road.

I've seen the E symbol come and go while parked in the General's carpark. Ditto when in Seaham - why is E reception so flaky/intermittent? I notice it appear occasionally in the city centre of Newcastle now, eg near my apartment which is on St James's Boulevard, but walk a couple of streets and its gone.

I've not yet had a consistent E session ANYWHERE, and I am up and down the UK with work all the time.

Using the diagnostics I can see that there are 8 masts in range of my office. The phone locks on to the one or other - depending on signal quality at any one time. I'm guessing that not all of them have been upgraded yet - or the signal is just not quite good enough (depending on where I am standing, and how much the building is blocking different masts) - hence intermittent Edge.

o2 Newmarket edge 26/10/07???

 This is strange, but right now febeuary 2008 there is still no edge coverage in newmarket, so i guess o2 probably lied about those dates to stop loosing customers, and whats more stupid, every other network offer 3g in newmarket, come o2, newmarket is the centre of the horse racing industry!

o2 Newmarket edge 26/10/07???

I phoned up o2 in regards of edge coverage in newmarket, which they have just confirmed there is no plans for the next year, which proves when they produced that list they were just lying . I wonder who even produced that list, should it be o2 then i took out a contract in belief that they were going to have edge coverage in newmarket. Now they say to me if i cancel contract, i have to pay 480 pounds. What about the false promises they have given us? o2's behaviour is completly unnaceptable, technically they are breaching contract because they are not providing the services that they announced. Very unhappy that they use techniques like this to try to keep customers and don't follow up on them ,

i am so livid with o2

o2 offered me 10 pounds as a will of good gesture, but i now stuck in a contract for 22 months remaining on a snail gprs network which is no good for me. I am an online poker student and gprs speeds are not good enough for pokerroom mobile software, edge is fine. Now when i play online poker, i have took out a 3g phone through vodafone pay as you go, online poker is fine, but it costs me 1 pound a day which i'm having to spend because o2 lied about their o2 rollout plan. That 22 month contract which i will get charged if i cancel, is so unfair because they were lying about having edge coverage in newmarket. Now thers no point in me canceling, cause i just get charged anyway, they should let me downgrade my contract to the minimum which is 15 pounds a month instead of 30 pounds a month, on the basis that they lied about having edge coverage in newmarket, don't y'all think that would be fair?
