oasis more popular than the Beatles

This thread is just ridiculous.

Oasis were a fine band in the mid 90s and had several catchy, fun singles. Some of which I listen to even today.

However, ask most people to name an album or even a track from a post-What's the Story album and 9 out of 10 (maybe more) won't have a clue.

"Be Here Now" coasted off the success of the previous two albums and still managed to be a huge dip in sales, and they haven't topped 5 million in sales for any album since - and that's worldwide.

A fun band that people growing up in the 90s have nostalgia for? Yes.

One of the all time greats? No.

I'd put them in the same category as Blur - successful at one point in time, a nice back catalog, several singles but nothing more.

I can't believe they haven't broken up by now, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised with their narcissism!

I love me some Oasis. What's the Story Morning Glory is high up there on my all time favorite albums list. Of course, so are a lot of Beatles and Pink Floyd albums.

I simply love British music.

I'm sure Noel is having a 60 foot version of the article made to put on the roof of his house.

I don't quite think Oasis are overall more popular than The Beatles.

Oasis have never created the same buzz as seen in Beatlemania...

Do you have Elmex and Aronal toothpaste in the UK? Just in case you haven't, you're supposed to use the one in the evening, and the other in the morning. I always had a big problem to remember which one is which, so I gave up on it completely.

The thing with Oasis is similar. For a long, long time, the media were constantly feeding us with the latest follies of the Gallagham (sp?) brothers. And the thing is - I still remember one was called Neil, and the other is Liam. But I could never figure out who is who, and nowadays I don't care at all.

Seriously, outside the UK, Oasis is known for a number of mid-90's hits, and maybe for a big comeback that was always promised but never really happened. And with nowadays media rather targeting on Mrs. Winehouse and Mr. Doherty, I doubt that Oasis will get much help from that side either.

The problem I have with Oasis is that they don't make me sit up and think, wow that was great. They do have some good songs and are very successful, but in all fairness, they jumped on the Brit-pop band wagon in the '90s and have just been lucky enough to last longer than the rest. If you listen to an early album and the most recent work they are all very 'safe', nothing new, nothing that pushes the limits of what people find acceptable. I guess it is very similar with U2, very 'safe'.

Ok it sells records and singles (for what they are worth these days) but there is no spark of imagination and nothing that grabs you by the short and curlies and makes you listen to them.

In my opinion, music these days is very boring and dry. Well it has been since the late 90's really. Ah well.

Exactly. They were NEVER a great band. They made albums that contained a few decent singles, and over time, most people can only recall Wonderwall. The music was very "Enjoy now", but also very "toss into the bin when finished". They were a singles band that were hoping their songs would pass down the middle and hit everyone. They were never a band that aimed to stand out.

On that note, I have met Liam Gallagher. He went to a bookstore I worked at, and I was a bit excited.

no....... no no

radiohead is much better than these guys..

but oasis is def not better than the beatles, let alone more popular..

maybe you should talk to this guy

i'm born 83 and thus grew up in the 90ties and still can remember only wonderwall ... not even talking about how their albums were actually called

on the other side i can name very likely dozens of beatles songs (or humming along or knowing the lyrics) and i wasn't even alive back in the day

I'm with you Brother, I love oasis, to say they are not a great band is ridiculous.

To still top these polls 10 years since they formed is proof of their long term popularity. These polls are usually filled with the popular bands of the day and the Beatles.

oasis mean more to most people in the UK than the Beatles do now.

If you don't know oasis I recommend

Definetly Maybe
The Masterplan
Whats The Story Morning Glory
Don't Believe The Truth

and leave the other three albums alone.

The best concert I have EVER been to was last year when Noel G did a solo tour. I was near the front, metres away from , The Chief, a genius.

Listen Up was spine tingiling-its a moving Noel classic which was tucked away as a B side. My favourite oasis song. Most people who say they don't like oasis only know wonderwall. Wonderall is Ok but not near their best.

Biggest oasis mistake was to squander the classic songs as throw away B sides BUT they are all on The Masterplan

Listen up

What’s the time said today
I’m gonna speak my mind
Take me up
To the top of the world
I wanna see my crime

Day by day
There’s a man in a suit
Who’s gonna make you pay
For the thoughts
That you think and the words
They won’t let you say

One fine day
Gonna leave you all behind
It wouldn’t be so bad
If I had more time

Sailing down a river alone
I’ve been trying to find
My way back home
But I don’t believe in magic
Life is automatic but I don’t mind being on my own
No, I don’t mind being on my own

Sailing down a river alone
I’ve been trying to find
My way back home
But I don’t believe in magic
Life is automatic
But I don’t mind being on my own
I said that I don’t mind
Being on my own
No, I don’t mind being on my own
I said I don’t mind being on my own

Not sure I agree with that. I mean personally, I'd more rather listen to a Radiohead album than a Beatles album, but The Beatles did more for music IMO.

Radiohead are still arguably the second most influential band of all time...

I really don't like the Beatles' music, but I do understand that this is one of those "You had to be there" situations, where you wouldn't understand the craze or love for the Beatles unless you grew up in their era. Listening to them now, they bore me, but back when they were big, they were revolutionary.

Radiohead are still arguably the second most influential band of all time...

I don't think so. ;) I like them, but influential in what way?

Lists like this are a load of fetid dingo's kidneys.

A very...vivid, description

Useless poll. The Beatles haven't recorded an album in almost 40 years. Most of their original fan base is more interested in reading AARP Quarterly than Q

In other news, the readers of Heat magazine vote Katie 'Jordan' Price as the greatest British author of all time.

I know that you've just made that up. I refuse to believe that Heat 'readers' have ever read a book, be it written by Jordan or anybody else! ;)

That's what I mean. I'd rather listen to Radiohead or The Beatles but any of those two are better than Oasis. But both The Beatles and Radiohead are more influential, by far.

Listen to Kid A. ^^

Listen to Kid A. ^^

Listen to Aphex Twin!

The 'influence' of Radiohead can be heard in all that wonderful middle-of-the-road dross produced by the likes of Coldplay, Travis, Keene, etc who were signed up in the late 90's and early 00's by record companies desperate to sign the next 'intellectual' (my wording) rock band.

Reminds me of a quote from Thom Yorke

When asked in 2001 by MTV, "How do you guys feel about the fact that bands like Travis, Coldplay and Muse are making a career sounding exactly like your records did in 1997?", Yorke replied, "Good luck with Kid A."

I'd love to hear the details of how these polls were conducted. Cuz I'm guessing they were hardly scientific.

Wait! I thought Coldplay was the new U2. ;)
