If you ask me, Apple will release two new iPad minis:

1. iPad mini w/o retina with A6 (~ $299)
2. iPad mini with retina and Touch ID (~$399)
3. iPad 5 with retina and touch ID (~$499)

I can pretty much imagine Tim Cook saying this:

Haha, I read that in Cook's voice.

Great post think you have it pretty much nailed.

Possible they just keep the existing mini as is at $299
or even offer it with only with 8GB
like the they do with last gen iPhones.

The question is will they risk offering a full spec'ed mini
for $100 less than the full size 5?

Overall income from iPads may go down that way...

Won't happen. if at all they retain the first gen mini, it will go down to $279 ( with all the outdated tech being dirt cheap to manufacture. With a slightly lower manufacturing costs, and many parts being uniform across the iOS range, you may find the 2nd gen with retina starting at the same $329 price ( at max it may kick up to $349 because of the retina)

On the other hand, the full size ipad has a higher probability of picking up the 32gb as a base model, because of the $12 cost price difference between the 16gb and 32gb. the $170 difference between the 2 ipad (mini and full size) models will be the 32gb, better graphics via G6630 and the bigger screen. They wont do the same on the mini ( 16 to 32gb) because the profit margin is too less.

I lost my beloved Mini a month ago, and went to BB this afternoon. ALL of the sales staff said there would not be a Mini with retina this year. There were two managers in that group, so I bought another 64GB in black. If there is a significant improvement announced on the 22nd, I have 45 days to return this Mini.

P.S. I don't think Touch ID is an improvememt for me.A better camera maybe, but taking pics with a Mini looks dorky...

People at Best Buy don't know anything.

But they seemed so certain. :D I have 45 days for them to be proven wrong, so it's a win-win for me. I'm running iOS 6 on my new Mini, and loving it. Some apps require an upgrade to iOS 7, and can't be downloaded. NBC is one, but I don't use that app......

lol @ taking advice from bestbuy sales people. They don't know anything about Apple future products.

Well of course the kids at BB don't know what the new Mini will have. It was intended to be a tongue in cheek post, although I did buy another Mini. The only reason I asked was so that when/if I return it after next Tuesday, I can say you told me no retina. Still debating about upgrading to iOS 7, although I'll eventually have to.

My prediction for October 22: Unless they come up with something tangibly better, I'll keep the original. I don't care about faster processors if I can't notice the difference. I was playing RR3 last night, and the A5 handled it just fine. I also like the display and battery life on this model, and wouldn't be willing to sacrifice one minute of power, or one ounce of weight for retina. I looked at the Nexus 7 (again) yesterday, and I simply don't need that much ppi on a tablet this size. iPad 5 will get all the new features, and the Mini a few upgrades. That'll boost iPad 5 sales, and the Mini will get updated sometime later to catch up when sales begin to drop. ;)

P.S. BB had lots of iPad 4 tablets in stock, and only a few Mini's. Either the Mini is selling well, or they're not getting new stock in. Just an observation.... I dunno.

Apple didn't really feel the mini the first time around, it was just going to be an also ran. It sure wasn't expected to be more popular and the excitement it created was a bit of a shock. Even a year on, sales are still strong.

This time around they know there's real demand. They know a powerful mini will sell (even at a higher price point) and they know there is room for two models. I would jump at the chance to upgrade to a flagship mini.

I used to have a retail business, but haven't seen a good retail salesman in years. I had an older Samsung 7" tablet that I tried to use while waiting for whatever Apple unveils, but it's just too small in terms of screen and keyboard. Samsung sold me a Mini.... :D

Agreed. The people on here are much more knowledgeable.

The funny thing about that statement is the people on here and the BB people probably get info from the same places most times, but BB get labeled as salemen while people on here get the knowledgeable label. BB people make guesses just like this thread is full of guesses.

After going from a full sized iPad to a mini, I really missed the size. I now have a nexus 7 and am very excited to purchase a full size ipad again.

Good point. When you generalize, you can always be proven wrong.

iPad 5:
  • New design with Gold, Space Grey, and Silver colors
  • Touch ID (75% sure)
  • Improved Camera
  • A7X Chip (For those wondering the "X" means it has more powerful graphics to drive the retina display on iPad. Proof: iPhone 4s and iPad 2: A5. iPad 3: A5X. iPhone 5: A6. iPad 4: A6X. iPad mini: A5
iPad mini 2:
  • Retina display (same as iPad 4)
  • Improved Camera
  • Slightly Thicker
  • A7X, maybe clocked down compared to iPad 5
  • I'm 50-50 on Touch ID

Apple hasn't really increased a price when they update a product in the past, so I don't see any reason as to why they would do so now...
