They announced the mini last year with severe supply constraints. Why wouldn't they do it again?

----------

100%. Even if they announce it with supply constraints, people will wait. Plus it will freeze the market and move Xmas sales into 1Q. Just like last year.

Lets hope your logical reasoning is logical for a reason. :p Im swedish so either Im gonna have wait halfway to eternity before its on sale here anyway.... But atleast if the release is soon maybe christmas is possible. The Iphone 5S will be available here in december.... *SIGH*

Nailed the date per WSJ, Dalrymple, and others today.
Well done.

Still thinking A7X for iPad and A6/X for mini? Or do you think the mini might get A7?

I know it was A5 for the first mini, but things seem to move more quickly now! And with Retina in the mini (assumed), might it make more sense to skip A6 and give the mini A7?

Looks like December will be in two weeks ;) :D

I'm starting to think that my original prediction was wrong with regard to the processor. There seems to be a lot of chatter regarding the A7. It would be unprecedented, but not out of the realm of possibility due to the competition in the 7" space. Not sure what to think quite yet...

You missed the date for selling yours though, there will be floods now. lol

In my experience, the real date is when the new models are released. Many of the general consumers that are looking for a deal on eBay are not tuned into the rumor scene as far as I can tell (go look at the recently completed sales just days before new models are announced/released).

To be safe, I typically list mine to end the day before invites are sent for the event. So, my listing will end on Monday, invites on Tuesday, announcement a week later, new iPad in my hands about a week and a half after that. It has worked out well for me in the past.

Yeah I was positively suprised by this, previous expectations was december, which would have sucked. So now I need to comtemplate which carrier to chose. I think my current carrier may have exhausted their chances...

My prediction: people who expect to see a retina iPad mini at $329 are going to be very disappointed.

They'll have an issue if they try to make it any more expensive though. The iPad mini was already more expensive than most people thought it would be at launch. If Apple had made it cheaper they'd have dominated the 7" tablet market by now.

doubt that. The non-retina Mini is here to stay. :)

I refuse to believe the next iPad mini won't have Retina. It will continue to put Apple behind in this market and I don't think that's in their interests.

I have to agree since the first gen sold like hot cakes and blew away larger iPad sales. If they do not increase the price with Mini retina, cannibalization all over again.

Unless they offer a 5 with 16gb for less than $499.

I think the pricing will be as follows:

iPad Mini w/ Retina: $399/16gb $499/32gb $599/64gb

A6X
1gb RAM
TouchID

iPad 5: $599/32gb $699/64gb $799/128gb

A7X
2GB
TouchID

Apple will increase the price of the retina mini by $70, and eliminate the 16gb iPad option while keeping the iPad 5 pricing the same as iPad 4. Apple will promote the full size iPad as more of a "pro" tablet to differentiate the two product lines.

TouchID uses part of the A7 SOC to securely store the fingerprint data. TouchID will not appear on a device with A6X for this reason.

Then I don't think we'll see TouchID on the mini then. It would be out of form for Apple to put the same exact chip in both the mini and the new full size iPad.

I'm fully expecting to see the A7 in the mini and most likely the A7X in the iPad 5. We're still in the dark about how Apple will specify the mini compared to the full sized iPad due to the first mini being a first generation device. I'm not convinced we will see TouchID on the new mini but I do expect an A7 with !GB RAM and retina. Give the iPad 5 TouchID, A7X and possibly 2GB RAM and there is enough to differentiate between the two.

Mini 2

I think they will max out a mini to hold them over till they start getting the larger phones to the market. They can charge more for the top end model say with the 128 gig, Touch id, retina, all three colors, the 5s camera set up. ($599.00)

I may be wrong, but wouldn't a retina mini have more pixels than a retina full-size iPad? If yes, wouldn't the retina mini require the more powerful CPU/GPU?

EDIT: Oh, wait. A retina mini will have the same number of pixels as a full-size iPad, but the pixels will be packed in denser. So a retina mini will have the same CPU/GPU requirements as a regular iPad. Right? Wrong?

You are completely correct.

However, I wonder what might be more expensive (for Apple): a larger screen (9.7") or a smaller, but denser screen (7.9")? This might affect the price.

Exact same number of pixels so exact same requirements to drive the display.

If you ask me, Apple will release two new iPad minis:

1. iPad mini w/o retina with A6 (~ $299)
2. iPad mini with retina and Touch ID (~$399)
3. iPad 5 with retina and touch ID (~$499)

I can pretty much imagine Tim Cook saying this:

So let's wrap it up. For the first time ever, we've introduced not one, not two but three new iPads. For the iPad mini, we were able to double the speed and make it even cheaper, which is just phenomenal. Next, we introduced a whole new iPad mini with retina display. It's a full-packed iPad, with our amazing new A7 and Touch ID and the display is just gorgeous. You have to see this yourself. Finally, the iPad 5 also brings the new A7 with touch ID and is 2x faster. It's got 16 hour battery life, the best in the market, yet we were able to make it 18% thinner and 27% lighter. It's an improvement only Apple could have done, and we did it. These are our best iPads ever.
