WHAT THE HECK DID THEY DO AWAY WITH THE 160GB CLASSIC FOR thank god I have one. I was expecting a 200gb one not a drop in gb for the same price did jobs get some deals on crappy smaller hard drives

Something fishy there! Its just sending metadata files to iTunes which has your playcount and stuff not ur whole library. Should not take that long.

Force Quit Itunes and try Genius again. All the best!

Thank you all fellas! Something was wrong indeed! I've tried again and the whole thing didn't last more than 20 minutes. Despite the keynote today, Genius is friggin good so far! iTunes was in a real need for such device :D

New Product... In-Ear Headphones

Everyone has read where the headphones extra features just work on iPod Nano G4 and iPod Touch G2... no other product has the correct four layer female headphone jack...right?

Anyone know if/when the new iPods (the 32 GB touch) will be available at Best Buy? I've got a few hundred and gift cards, and would like to pick up a new touch - if only to test dev work on the touch platform...

The iPhone (1st gen and I presume 3G) has a 4-layer plug. It must be something else.

From watching the video. it seems like people weren't buying the 160 gig enough to keep it on.

Does the new Touch come with the new headphones? None of the reports from the event seem to answer this question one way or the other.

Does anyone know if you can remove the Genre column from the browser in itunes8?

According to the spec page, no mention of iPhone compatibility, unfortunately:

"The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation). Audio is supported by all iPod models."

http://www.apple.com/ipod/inearheadphones/

This does not even make sense. Why would they not be able to support this hardware on the iPhone. The software is almost identical. I read the link and I don't disagree, it just doesnt make sense.

After trying out the genius feature I can say that it is, indeed, ace. I am surprised at how well it actually works. The songs in the playlists it creates just seem to go together. Love it!

Comes with regular headphones

Sorry, but the new described headphones (both) are additional accessories, coming in October.
Like the iPhone 3G dock.

It's simply different hardware... another reason to upgrade to the new iPhone next year/ season.

This was the best keynote for a long time! Hope the will continue to improve in the future!

General Feeling of dissapointment

I have a fairly large music collection around 90GB at 320kbps (all legit). I was holding on for an 80gb ipod touch. I can't be faffed to endlesly have to rejig playlists etc to get what I want on a PMP.

Having watched the keynote I must confess I was dissapointed.
a) It seems to be a triumph of marketing over substance. The new Ipod touch might be thinner (cmon guys how much thinner do you need. Is 5mm to 3 mm (or the illusion of 3 mm that much of a deal and BTW the measurments Ive put here are simply to illustrate a point. You're simply going from tiny to tinier).
b) Is having your ipod in yellow rather than white silver or black really a major technological breakthrough?
c) More capacity in the Ipod touch would have been more useful. Give us an 80gb or a 120gb touch.
d) No tablet.
e) No new macs or mac books.
f) The only new thing is some new software to try and extreact yet more cash from us all which is sexy for Apple but doesn't add much value if your ipod is already full.

It seems to me that either Apple are temporarily out of ideas and simply wanted a refresh for Xmas or
They've simply run out of ideas or
They've got something else in the wings.

Whilst I'm only one person I must confess I find myself in the position now that I am looking around to see if anyone else has anything better. I'm not prepared to spend $299 (I'm sure it'll be £299 here) on a 32GB pmp.

My summary

Pretty boring really.
It opens up the doors to others to catch up unless this was specifically to tempt other manufacturers into releasing their product lines (Cunning tactics) before Apple drops something really special on us all.
I can't believe this will maintain Apple's market share. I would expect a small drop in market share unless of course the competition fails to step up to the plate. :(

Sony walkman?

Has anybody mentioned yet, that the shake to shuffle feature was introduced by Sony for their Walkman phones more than a year ago?

And the shake to shuffle was ...

The only thing I was impressed with :-<

It made me laugh (a minor but cool feature) . As per the lifespan of an empire perhaps Apple has become mature (past its peak). These certainly don't seem like the releases of a company that came out with the Apple 2/Lisa/Mac/Ipod.

Hey ho perhaps things will get better.

If Apple doesn't get on this mythical tablet device and release it during or before Q1 2009 I am going to revolt and sell everything Apple that I own.

Does that mean that you've "volt"ed before?

but surely revolting is a bit extreme.

I'm dissapointed but then I've always been stuck in the (dare I say it) Windows camp. I bought Ipods cos I liked them and cos there was nothing better. I liked the Apple Newton and am committed to PDA's. I use Windows Mobile 6.1 which I find clunky but I can add apps and there is nothing for the iphone yet to matc the apps I've got (and the aftermarket for apps for Windows Mobile 6.1 is currently far better than that for the Iphone). I look over my shoulder at the Iphone and I like it. I love the interface but the hardware isn't sufficient to tempt me away from Windows mobile. This is the first ipod release which I haven't been remotely impressed with. I will not buiy any of the newest generation Ipods. Indeed having looked at the Creative Xen X-Fi I am considering buying a 32GB version with a 16GB SD HC card which will give me a larger capacity than the Ipod Touch in a small device. I'm not sure I understand what Apple is playing at. I carry all my music aroudn so that I have a choice. I need around 90GB just for music. Then if I had video etc it all adds up.

WHAT THE HECK DID THEY DO AWAY WITH THE 160GB CLASSIC FOR thank god I have one.
Because Toshiba's new platters hold more data. The Classic is now single platter only but when the double platter (240GB) drives are ready the Classic will have two versions again. So they say.

It would not make sense to have a single platter model at 120GB and a double platter at merely 160GB. Not enough difference.

Interesting move...

Apple releases new earbuds that are supposedly only compatible with 4th gen nano, 120 gb ipod classic and 2.1 touch. NOT the iphone?! Way to stick it to the 3g adopters. "Hey john mayer here, saying that i want a refund for my dissapointment...just kidding apple."
