What is that supposed to mean? Microsoft releases fixes and patches for their software all the time. They had a fix for Office 2004 not too long ago, actually.

Microsoft aren't rushing to get fixes out for Office 2007 or Vista, so why do you think that they'll rush something out for Office 2008. I bet it'll be at least 6 months before they release anything.

  • Ridiculously slow opening times
  • Un-intuitive way of deleting charts in Excel
  • No reasonable way to uninstall Entourage without the rest of Office
  • Entourage not working with my Hotmail account

PowerPoint

Been doing a lot with PowerPoint recently. Have a lot of course material that's created in PowerPoint that needs to be updated.

It's good to see the preview panel on the LHS. Much nicer than just seeing the outline in Office 2004.

Been struggling with the template not using styles properly. When creating new slides the fonts are smaller for all levels. Can't seem to change this by editing the master template, so have to change it manually, e.g. select the text and increase the font from 14 to 18 (the correct size). This is a complete PITA.

Unless I can figure out a fix for this, I'm going to have to regress to Office 2004.

Microsoft put in all that effort for all the nice stuff and pointless animations, then they spoil it with screwing up the basics. What a bunch of ****s.

PowerPoint -- drawing arrows & lines

It's common to draw a line or arrow from the text to point at a screenshot/whatever.

Firstly, the lines are drawn using a toolbar that's only available floated. So it doesn't fit anywhere. As the toolbox changes in size (width) it can't fit alongside there. So I've made it horizontal and put it in front of the wasted space at the top of the page. Annoyance.

I like to make these lines curved. Now there's a broken line editor that is just useless. It used to be possible to insert a point on a line, make it curved, and position it anywhere. Now it seems to have some weird box around it and screws up the 'arrow' pointers at the end of the line. Crap. This makes it unusable.

PowerPoint -- inserting images

There's a bunch of new image formatting commands. Some of these are really neat, particularly the 3-D styles where you can insert a screenshot and it appears laid on it's back with a nice border around the edge. Very Mac, very chic.

But, and I'm still to prove this, I have a horrid feeling that this is completely incompatible with Office 2003 -- THE STANDARD which all presentations/documents/spreadsheets have to adhere to.

I shall find out soon enough when I submit my documents to my editor.

If this is the case, it's pointless. The only way will be to insert it and then use 'Grab' to get a screenshot of the format, delete the item, and insert the 'plain' picture. A lot of effort that's definitely not worth it.

Dumb question...

In Word, how do you change the default font back to Times New Roman? It always opens up with Calibri.

Change the font with a blank document open. Then click save as, and save the file as a new template (select "Word Macro Enabled Template, .dotm" under the format drop-down menu in the save as dialogue box) in the user templates directory.

Also, you'll probably want to ditch the double spacing. You can do that as well, but it's already selected as single spacing. You'll have to turn off the spacing before and after new paragraphs. By default, Word:mac 2008 defaults to 10 points after a paragraph. You should set this to zero. (You can find this in the Alignment & Spacing category in the format popup box.)

PowerPoint: Can't <alt>+Drag for copy!

Well, goodness knows what's gone wrong with the damn thing; I can't get PowerPoint to <alt>+Drag to copy a line. Pasting it in reduces the font size even further (see previous posting).

I've totally had enough of testing this latest Microsoft stuff and need to get some work done. So... back to PowerPoint 2004 for me.

PowerPoint woes

That POS has messed up most of the boxes in a presentation (course material). For some reason it's taken upon itself to crush all boxes, so a whole bunch of concentric boxes in some diagrams have been shagged. Great. Now I've got to spend some considerable effort recreating them.

And it's knackered various pointer arrows, again it seems to have crushed their boxes and flattened them.

I have now got to use PowerPoint 2004 to re-do this chapter because PowerPoint 2008 has broken large chunks of it.

All I can say is don't use PowerPoint 2008 -- it is not fit for purpose.

Update: seems to be that the boxes are set to "resize autoshape to fit text". Cheers, thanks a bunch.

Is it just me or has Quicklook and Office 08 files become more stable with 10.5.2. I remember before the update sometimes .ppt files would just show the Powerpoint icon instead the preview icon. Now after 10.5.2, those files started to show. At least Apple is doing their part!!

All I have to say is Entourage 08 is a big improvement from 2004. It is much faster than before. However, for some reason, I don't like the sidebar much. I wish I could change the look of it.

It sounds like this version officially rings the beginning of the demise of MS Office. Cheaper alternatives are for the most part on par with it or better and the tendencies are obvious. If only Apple would fix Numbers...

Theres an easier way to do that. Format -> Font -> Select Times New Roman or whatever you want -> click default at the bottom left corner -> done

I'll go with that.

This POS has completely hosed over 300 slides of course material that I've written. My editors want me to re-enter everything using Office 2003 on Windows. FFS, MS flog this POS as a productivity tool. I'm now faced with goodness knows how many days of mind-numbing -- and unpaid -- work to re-generate everything back to as it was.

I rue the day that I ever installed Office 2008.

Um... so the fact that they finally got around to plugging a major security hole/data loss bug for a program released FOUR YEARS AGO proves your point how? I sure hope they're working on Spaces/Expose compatibility, but everything I've seen suggests it'll be months before it's worked out.

Is it slow on PPC? Because on my intel mac, its lightning fast (yes, even faster than iWork programs). Also haven't experienced any major crash or key lag yet.

They do use a good bit of RAM, though.

This falls under the category of "learn from my mistake." I had a .docx file on my iDisk that I was working on in the office. I spent three hours on it and saved when I was done. I saved and then tried to close the file; I received the dialog box "do you want to save changes before closing?" I was taken aback but said yes anyway. I tried to close the file again with the same result (once again I clicked on yes). The third time I clicked on no, thinking that I had saved the file at least three times previously. Guess what? The file closed this time, and when I opened it up again, none of the work I had done over the three hours had been saved. The program must have crashed long before I finished, since I know I had clicked on save many times before I finished.

I'm home now and I have been able to redo all my work. I just wanted to share this experience so that no one else suffers the same fate.

I installed Office 2008 on my 12 inch PB and it's SUPER SLOW!!! I thought that it was because my PB was old but apparently not after reading all of these complaints about it being super slow.

Word - Embedded objects & macros

When writing documents, certainly when using Office 2003, I will often create diagrams using an embedded PowerPoint slide. I've been able to do this since Office 4.2, maybe earlier.

Can't do that with Office 2008. Have to either create a slide in PowerPoint then use Grab to take a screen shot, then embed it. Or use Photoshop/Fireworks which aren't that good for creating diagrams.

Also I've noticed that there's no macro language. Just little things like recording a few key strokes -- nothing complex. They do provide macros, but these are built in and can't be edited.

Office 2008 - Back to the Future

Excel is slow and buggy. I have problems with selecting a range of cells - keeps jumping around. Also does not remember currency format options - not everyone uses the $. A very poor effort. I may downgrade back to Office X or switch to Numbers in the absence of a bug fixing update. Do NOT rush to upgrade!

Expose Problems

I noticed that Word does not play well with expose. When I show all windows and highlight the document, it doesnt display any information and the blue highlight box is not on the right place.

Check out my attached picture.

Does anyone know of a fix or are other people experiencing these problems?

Cut and Paste...

My copy won't even cut and paste. Even if you copy and paste a line of text in the same document it crashes!!! Yet it will happily paste into a document from Word V.x which I luckily kept on the machine.
Excel is the same. A copy and paste of a chart from Excel 2008 crashes Word 2008 yet goes into Word V.x just fine.
Now I read that Trial versions must be removed, but nowhere did it say old full versions, and I'm not keen to remove Office V.x anyway. I've turned off every other program to see if this helps but it doesn't.
In fact, get this, even trying to quit using File-Quit causes it to crash and relaunch. I had to force quit it to get rid of the bloody thing.
Can anyone help???

Bloody Microsoft...

In fact, I have never known a program behave as badly as this. Ever.
Could I just have a faulty copy somehow?
