I tried emailing Microsoft on Monday to get another update on my order status since the status page itself still just says, "Order Submitted." I received an auto-reply saying that they would get back to me within one business day. 30 hours later, I still haven't heard back from them.

I can't imagine how they can be so far behind on this. It's not like there's anything technical about going through rebate forms. They could hire a hundred temps and go through the backlog pretty quickly... if that's really the cause for the delay.

On the Mac Mojo blog, they keep ignoring commenters who ask for information about the delay. When I called them last week I was surprised when they said that they had over 10,000 envelopes left to go through but now someone else says that they were told it was a backlog of 50,000 to 60,000. So maybe my shock over their apparent honesty was ill-founded. Maybe they were just making up excuses.

At any rate, it hasn't been 8 weeks yet so I guess I can't really complain unless they don't ship my order by next Tuesday. We'll see.

I notice that a lot of folks are dumping their Media Editions on eBay and Amazon.com. If you didn't get in on the "super suite deal" promotion, but want to own Office '08, now might be the time to buy as the glut of Media Editions for sale has driven the price to very low levels (i.e., below $200 in some cases).

I too received Special Media Edition instead of Home & Student Edition (though to lay some blame on myself, I did originally request SME and called into them in early February to have it switched, which they told me would not be a problem).

I called yesterday and they said they would credit me for the shipping charge, send out H&SE, and I would get to KEEP SME.

Good job Microsoft, good job.

Got my Media Edition yesterday. I called the number out of curiosity, to see what options I had if I got the wrong version.

They answered the phone in less than 30 seconds. The person I talked to told me if I wanted to switch to the Home & Student version that they would issue an RMA, send out a box and label and have me ship the version I have now back to them. Once they receive it, then they would ship me back the Home & Student version. He said it was an option they were offering to anyone, regardless what version they ordered. And they would refund the shipping.

I told him I would think about it, but since I'm still using Office 2004 and only would be upgrading one of the Macs in the house to 2008, I'll just keep the Media Edition they sent (which was the one I ordered).

Just curious why they are telling others to keep the SME without requiring them to send it back, which is the option I was told on the phone last night.

Regardless, it's nice that it finally came.

Maybe I just need to call back and speak to someone else. Did they ask for your order number?

Why are people dumping the Media Editions? Is there something drastically wrong with this version? I am still awaiting an answer from MS. Mine still says processing. That was a while back...Thanks!

Bill......

I think they are just trying to make money.

If you bought Sudent & Teacher 2004 from Amazon with the Black Friday rebate and did the 2008 ME upgrade rebate, your total cost would a little over $30. If you bought it today from Amazon, though, it will cost you over $400.

I did get mine on Monday! (not selling, though--I "need" it.)

I rather not put Microsoft on my Mac

I had PC s and I rather use Apple Hardware and software with their own products. I rather not take a chance to let Microsoft on my system that has potential to screw that up. iWorks '08 is working fine for me I'm not in a compulsive need to spend money on Office '08. Pages '08 suffice for me.

No, there's nothing wrong with this version. As iSee says, they're just trying to make money. If you qualified for the Super Suite Deal, you essentially got the Media Edition free. Some folks apparently just want to convert their freebie into cash. Because of so many sellers, though, the Media Edition is now selling on eBay and Amazon marketplace for less than the standard edition.

I finally received my Office 2008 discs on Monday.

On that day thought, I received a strange email, the same one you get after you reply to their backorder email that you need to reply with an X in the box in order to keep your order active. As I had not responded to a backorder email in several weeks (and received the standard reply) I called the support number in the email. When I gave the support rep my order number she discovered it was not only shipped but sitting on my doorstop at home.

All in all, it was a great deal, and I love the product, but it does seem like the whole process could have gone a bit more smoothly. (Although I would not have even known about the difficulties they were having fulfilling orders had they not sent any emails and just shipped the product and one day I would come home and find it on my porch.) Nonetheless, the minor difficulties they had would not discourage me from participating in the next promotion, and they do seem to be doing their best to resolve any issues people may have had.

It's fantastic Microsoft is being so good about getting this fixed for us, but considering how bad Office 2008 has been for me, I don't know if it's a good thing or not! ha-ha.

Does anyone know if Special Media edition can be installed on a desktop and a laptop like Office 2007 (PC)?

If not, I might get the home version instead. I ordered Special media, because I used to need exchange support, but when I got my MacBook Air, I signed up for .Mac and use imap instead.

Office 2008 is like Office 2004. You enter a product key to verify it, but it doesn't send it home to microsoft to see how many times it has been used.

Nevertheless, the license is for 1 computer.

Good job Microsoft, good job.

To follow-up on my situation, I just received my Home & Student Edition today, two days after calling them about the mix-up.

I called them last week and they said that no information was even on file of them ever receiving anything from me. I faxed a form to the guy I was on the phone with but never got a follow up or anything. Then I called later that week and the guy I talked to said he would send an email to the first guy I talked to and he would call me. That never happened.

Then today I called again to see what was up. The guy put me on hold for like 10 minutes and then verified my name, address, etc. and gave me what he called a "new" order number, however, i never received an "old" order number in the first place. He didn't ask for my credit card information or anything, so the only thing I can assume is they actually received my initial submission. However, I have yet to receive an email so that I can check the status.

I don't even know why I am so eager to get this, I hardly even use Office 2004.

I also called today and was told that they couldn't even confirm that my rebate was ever received. I was told to call back next week.

Does this sound like the norm?

A colleague who also applied for the upgrade is still waiting, as well. It seems that MSFT still has to process a bunch of requests.

My order status finally changed today. For the last two months it has simply said, "Order Status: Order Submitted" but now it says, "Order status: Order in process."

I guess we'll see if it shows up by Tuesday so they can meet their "6 to 8 weeks after general availability" deadline.

Got my copy of the Media Edition Friday. Other than the wait had no problems with this offer. Pretty excited to play around with Office and happy it is now Universal.

Still think that I will write my PhD dissertation in Office 2007 for compatibility with Endnote and others reason. But we will see! Hopefully with the next generation of iWork I can rely on non-Microsoft products.

Finally got mine. Not sure if I should sell it or keep it. I'm not a big OFfice user so the 2k4 version that I bought to get 2k8 might be enough.
