Thank you for the quick response. Hm..SQL is not Microsoft technology, so let's remove that from the list. I guess if I wind up at a Microsoft-powered server or a site that is ASP oriented, yeah, I'm using MS stuff.

I don't allow Silverlight on my machines. Don't use Flip4Mac. So I guess I'm about as MS-free as one can get.

I use Open Office or Neo Office for when I need to work with .doc or .docx files. For myself it's iWork and I love it. But I do understand the need to have Office for full compatibility. Open Office is good for 90% of that, but if you need 100% get the MS stuff.

The question now would be... why go out of your way to be MS free?

I'm looking forward to this. I've stopped using 2008 altogether.

2008 was garbage.

Does Word still take forever to launch? That's more important to me than any futzing with the interface.

Does it still sometimes pause while I'm typing, or when I do a cut/copy, even on a high-end Mac Pro? If Microsoft hasn't greatly improved responsiveness, I'm so not interested...

Just personal principle. I read the Findings of Fact in the 90s monopoly trial, the findings that were upheld in appeal even if the punishment was not. It so disgusted me, I decided to cut Microsoft out of my life so I wouldn't have to do business with such crooks. Again, just a personal choice.

I hate M$ as much as just about anyone, but Silverlight really isn't a problem. Far superior to Flash, for instance. And Flip4Mac is just a tool to get along. It's there when you need it, doesn't have to be a big deal.

Windows is the problem. And certain versions of Office apps that have been crap, but still foisted on people. (I'm talking about YOU, Word 6.0)

I'd really love to see OneNote for Mac. It's not that it's a perfect application, but I still couldn't find any better, and it works very well with a Wacom tablet. I rarely use paper anymore. If I need a pencil, I just grab my tablet PC instead, but I'd really love to have an OS X version of OneNote. It needs to open my existing documents created by the Windows version, though.

Agree. Windows def. is not up to snuff. That doesn't mean other MS technologies aren't good. Exchange and Silverlight are great. I think Silverlight could kill Flash.

Rip Ppc

I'm glad this is Intel-only. I've been trying to convince people at work to dump their old PPC Macs, and this just might be enough to finally convince the last few holdouts.

I have yet to meet someone who likes the ribbon of 07 & 11. They basically just made the icons so huge that they need tabs now. At least give us an option to have small icons again so everything can fit on the bar. I get they used it to organize but it's frustrating.
What you said! HugE waste of small notebook pixels and like having to learn the whole program again. And learn it newbie style.

New version of messenger for Mac included with office 11?

Ya I'd like to know what they have up their sleeve for this one. Like I said, the current "beta," which is more like an alpha, is absolute trash and is really unusable. No offline messages, nudges, even display pics, and the list goes on. It's been like 6 months since this "beta" release, and still no news, let's see what happens come October 26.

Anyone else just hate the "ribbon" toolbars that you find in every Microsoft application nowadays? (Edit: Apparently, yes. :D) It takes way too many clicks to get what you want, and there is so much change happening in that small space... I just don't like the interface at all. It takes too much time getting used to, if I ever do.

I won't upgrade simply because I hate the "ribbon" toolbars.

I have 2011

I currently have a retail copy of 2011 installed on my Mac. I have it, because I work for a school district and we get stuff ahead of time.

I have to say that it's the best Office ever made. It completely stomps Office 2010 for Windows and I hate to say it, but Word might actually win me over this time. I may stop using Pages as much. Outlook is great too! I always refused to leave Apple Mail for Entourage, but I just may leave it for the new Outlook.

The best feature is Layers. I actually thought of this years ago. I've emailed apple.com/feedback and asked them repeatedly to put this into Keynote and Pages. I hope they do! We really need a way to explore the layers when your building complexed presentations.

If iWork does not adopt some kind of layers feature I'll probably end up using Office for all my presentation. The biggest headache I have with using any office suit is not being able to effectively manage my layers in my doc and keynotes.

I thought I'd never say this again... like ever, but GOOD JOB MICROSOFT!

Does anyone having any luck connecting Outlook 2011 to an Exchange 2003 server?

I get the same zero informational errors that I used to get in Entourage.
Might as well show a graphic of a guy shrugging his shoulders.

The exchange setup looks suspiciously like Snow Leopard's setup (which only worked with 2007 Exchange).

Was it crazy for me to expect the same setup as Office 2010 on the PC???

Any dates established for HUP?

I hope this new version will be available in our Home Use Program like the 2008 version currently is. Any mention of the date this will be available?

You can save a few bucks if you buy Office 2008 (129 on amazon currently for home and student). You'll get a free 3-license download to 2011 when it's released.

Would have been nice if they launched this before school started. Oh well, see if I can hold out 'til the 26th!

Outlook 2011 doesn't support WebDAV. 2003 will not work.

They slowed down scrolling because it was to fast ?

That's why I scroll my mouse slow when I want slow and fast when I want fast.
How about they just make an adjustable slider in the preferences like. that way people can have scrolling at the rate they like. Kind of like how there's a system wide volume control, but the iTunes has its own volume control that works within the system-wide setting. You have your system-wide mouse scrolling speed set, then the setting within the app.
